Lamakaan presents
Activist in Residence
TREPAN SINGH CHAUHAN

Title of the talk: From Chipko to Fascism:
The Story of a Small State - Uttarakhand

The Chipko movement of the 1970s and 80s marks the explosion of mass political conciousness that is to transform into the popular movement for a separate "small" state and eventually the formation of Uttarakhand in 20**. TSC will walk us through the two decades of struggle but even more importantly the rapid transformation of caste and class in Uttarakhand over the last decade and the emergence of a new elite. His talk will offer lens through which we might reflect on the emergence and consequences of Telangana.

About TREPAN SINGH CHAUHAN

TSC is a militant political activist and renowned novelist-poet who has for over two decades now been at the center of grassroots people's movements and a visionary voice on the future of the mountains and it's people. Trepan' started his political life as a young 14-year-old militant with the Chipki movement and by the middle 1990s he and other youth had articulated a new movement - Chetna Andolan - that not only became the 'peoples rights' voice of the Statehood movement but has since its formation articulated a vision of Uttarakhand as an experiment in Social Justice.

Apart from countless popular essays and pamphlets, TSCs short stories, poems, and novels have established him as one of the most important emergent voices in Hindi literature. His five novels -- Sarjan Navyug ka, Yumuna, Bhaag ki phans, He Byari and Darwaze ke Peeche have won him much critical acclaim.

Screening of Battleship Potemkin
Fri Jan 26, 4:00 PM
HYDERABAD CINEPHILES
Remembering Sergei Eisenstein on his 120th birthday.
Screening of Movie “Battleship Potemkin (1925)”
This Sergei Eisenstein’s movie is an all time masterpiece. It is based on the mutiny of Russian sailors against their tyrannical superiors on the battleship Potemkin during the Revolution of 1905. Although this movie is an agitational and revolutionary movie, it is also recognised for its pictorial beauty and great elegance of form. The movie is symmetrically made in five acts. Eisenstein was pioneer in the theory of dialectical montage as he believed that the meaning in motion pictures is generated by the collision of opposing shots. The agitational appeal of Battleship Potemkin was such that it became nearly irresistible when it was released in 1926.
After the screening of the movie, there will be a discussion on it in which all the viewers are welcome to participate.

ADDABAAZI:Make In India EkDhokha
Tue Jan 30, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
As soon as Modi government came to power, it was focused to bring more and more foreign capital into the Indian market. Congress too always looked keen to open up various sectors one by one to bring foreign capital but BJP has taken it many steps forward in last three years. When BJP was in opposition, it opposed the same FDI’s in various sectors but now it is trying to bring more and more of it. What is the reason for this? What will be the impact of this foreign capital infusion into Indian market? BJP has relaxed the labour laws to a very large extent which means the rights of labourers are heavily curtailed. It has also given a lot of impetus for relaxation of rules and procedures for business approvals and has given a clean chit to the businessman for exploitation of various resources like farmland, water bodies, mines etc. BJP is showing a glorious future to everyone by advertising its program of “Make in India”. But with all these major changes, will Make In India benefit the common man and the working class poor of this country? Will such policy enormously benefit the foreign corporates or will it change the lives of the working class people ? Is “make in India” a populist slogan with nothing substantial for the large section of the society?
Lamakaan programming council Is organizing a series of informal discussions and chit-chat under the name “ADDABAAZI”. The topic of Make in India – Ek Dhokha ! is chosen as the first in these series of discussions. So in order to understand the politics and economics around “ Make in India” and discuss it in an informal way, Moderator Mr. Aniket Aalm.
Lamakaan invites all of you on 30th Jan 2018 at 7:00 pm.

Safarnama Theatre presents Shakkar k Paanch Daane & Wajeh - Set of 2 Plays

Play 1: Shakkar k Paanch Daane

As Rajkumar speaks about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village he mentions the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in his drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years. Eventually he realizes that everyone has a story inside them. Rajkumar has been requested to write a poem for a compilation to be published. Come join us to watch Safarnama’s take on the play 'Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane' written by the playwright Manav Kaul and get introduced to Rajkumar to realize the absurdity of the request.

Societal changes play a major role in shaping the inner being of a child. It is said, that an individual's personality depends on his upbringing which means one's actions in some way or the other are proportional to these changes. So, if one follows, as you may call it, a henious path, who is to be blamed? Safarnama presents a psychological thriller Wajeh? which is bound to leave you thinking. Soz: A Ballad of Maladies
Sun Feb 4, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Come and watch one of the most significant films of our times.

Soz: A Ballad of Maladies - Premier show in Hyderabad
a film byTUSHAR MADHAV & SARVNIK KAUR

Film screening followed by the discussion with the filmmakers.

About the film:
A departure from Kashmir's Orientalist stereotype of a 'paradise' unfolds a transformed cultural landscape of the deeply militarized valley where spiritual ideals of Sufiyana music and traditional poetry metamorphose into political lyricism of modern Hip Hop and Rock. This film is a portrait of those poets, musicians and artists who have turned their art into weapons of resistance during periods of heightened state repression and violence in Indian-administered Kashmir. By evoking the collective memory of a people and unwinding threads of their folk history, the featured artists and musicians in this film negotiate with questions of survival, resistance and freedom – all deeply embroiled in the complex conflict of Kashmir.

NGS Data Analysis INTRO Talk
Sat Feb 10, 11:00 AM
Praharshit Sharma
Low-cost sequencing has grown in demand over the years, and that has driven the development of high-throughput sequencing, also called next generation sequencing (NGS). In a parallel mode, millions of sequences are concurrently produced in a single next-generation sequencing run. NGS has become commonplace in Bioinformatics labs worldwide. Due to the commercialization of various affordable desktop sequencers, NGS has become within the reach of traditional wet-lab biologists. Not since quite long ago, genome-wide scale computational analysis is increasingly being used as a backbone to foster and nurture novel discovery in biomedical research. However, as the avalanche of sequencing output data increase exponentially, the analysis bottle-neck is yet to be solved.

Sikkidre Shikari, Ildidre Bhikari (Bird trapper or Beggar)a film by Vinod Raja Film screening followed by discussion with the Director.
Do come and bring your friends along. ENTRY FREE and OPEN TO ALL!!!
SHORT SYNOPSIS- “If I trap a prey I am a Hunter, if not I remain a beggar!” They are a free spirited nomadic tribe who began their journey many generations ago in the North Western part of the Indian subcontinent. Over time they traveled through and settled in different states of the country.
As they moved, they survived through trapping birds and hunting small game in the forests and selling them in cities and towns along with lucky charms and trinkets. If the trap failed, begging was the next best bet!
The film emerged through a series of community conversations held when we travelled with friends from a settlement in Bannerghatta, Bangalore to other settlements across Karnataka.
Exiled from the forest, reviled by the city, their traditional ways of life outlawed, the Hakki Pikkis share their stories of wit and survival.
Duration of the film is 78 minutes

Written by: Manav Kaul

Play 2: Wajeh
Societal changes play a major role in shaping the inner being of a child. These changes either motivate the child to aspire for a brighter future or they force him to go through a psychotic breakdown. It is said, that an individual's personality depends on his upbringing which means one's actions in some way or the other are proportional to these changes. So, if one follows, as you may call it, a henious path, who is to be blamed? Safarnama presents a psychological thriller Wajeh? which is bound to leave you thinking. Join us to watch Smitali Das's take on crime fiction.
