Mindfulness with Mandalas
Sat Apr 28, 12:30 PM
Mehak Narula
Mindfulness is a state of bringing our attention to the current moment. It involves non-judgmental awareness of our thoughts, emotions and surroundings.

Creating Mandalas helps to cultivate this mindfulness. While focusing on the shapes, patterns, and colors, we orient our senses to the present and this immersion in the present moment helps shield us from the crushing weight of daily hassles and major life interruptions.

Celebrating Madeeha Gauhar
Sat Apr 28, 5:00 PM
COVA
Celebrating Madeeha Gauhar

Madeeha was the Founder of Ajoka theatre group of Pakistan and a legendary activist for peace in South Asia.

She passed away on 25th April 2018 in Lahore, Pakistan.
Let’s come together to pay our homage and celebrate her life and contribution.
COVA, KOSHISH, LAMAKAAN & SUTRADHAR

Knowing Madeeha

Madeeha Gauhar (21 September 1956 – 25 April 2018) was a Pakistani actress, playwright and director of social theatres, and women's rights activist. In 1983, she founded Ajoka Theatre where social themes are staged in theatres, on the street and in public spaces. With Ajoka she performed in Asia and Europe.

Gauhar was born in 1956 in Karachi, Pakistan. After obtaining a Master of Arts degree in English literature, she moved to England where she obtained another master's degree, studying theatre sciences at the University of London. In 1983, with her studies completed, she returned to her native country, settling in Lahore. There, Gauhar and her husband Shahid Nadeem founded Ajoka Theatre, a notable theatre group of significance in the city. Ajoka (English:Currunt) elaborates on the oral tradition of Bhand and Nautanki and found a flourishing base in the area that overlaps the province of Punjab. With Ajoka, Gauhar performed in Pakistan, and subsequently internationally in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, as well as in several countries in Europe.

In directing performances in the theatre, Gauhar utilised aesthetics and theatrical techniques to reflect the moral, social and political reality of contemporary Pakistan. A recurrent theme for her, as a feminist, was the subject of women's rights in a society that is greatly dominated by men. In 2007 Ajoka performed a play that was written and directed by Gauhar, the Burqavaganza (Burqa-vaganza), which led to great controversy. Actors dressed in burkas acted out themes of sexual discrimination, intolerance and fanaticism. In her own country, Members of Parliament called for a ban of the performance but in spite of the ban, non-governmental organizations and women's rights activists had the play translated into English and staged performances internationally as a sign of support to Ajoka.

Awards and nominations

Gauhar was the recipient of numerous awards for her theatrical efforts, including:

At the first iteration of the 1st Indus Drama Awards in 2005, she was nominated for Best Actress Drama Serial in a Supporting Role.
Gauhar was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
In 2006, Gauhar was awarded Prince Claus Award in the Netherlands.
She received the Pride of Performance, by the President of Pakistan for her efforts in improving Pakistani theatre.

Written by Lakshmi Narayan Lal, this play falls under the 'Theatre of Absurd' genre.

The play largely focuses on the idea of existentialism and showcases a court room scenario where logical construction and argument gives way to irrational and illogical speech and ultimately to silence. It follows the murder case of the Abdullah and addresses the comfortable certainties of social, religious and political orthodoxy and aims to shock its audience out of complacency and strives to bring them face to face with the harsh facts of the human situation.

"KYILKHOR"
Sun Apr 29, 10:30 AM
MAITHILI S
"KYILKHOR" is Tibetan for mandala means 'that which encircles a center'.“Center” here, what it means is “a meaning,” and that which encircles it is a symbol, or a representation of the meaning. Mandalas represent wholeness, unity and harmony. Most importantly, your mandala needs to be soulful. You may bring vegetables & fruits of all colors to make mandalas or draw and paint on a sheet of paper the choice is yours. Just make sure you have fun with it. If the food mandala is bigger than 4 Sq.Ft and a very intricate design then more than one person can work on it, but please make sure you have friends around to share it with or you can always donate the food to a old age home or a home for the needy.

Rooh ji Rehaan | A Gathering of Souls
Stories, Poetry and Songs from the world of Shah Latif

Those who set out with nothing
Experience union
Those who bedeck themselves
Remain forsaken

- Shah Latif

Explore the poetry of the great 18th century Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, through storytelling, translations and songs. Vipul Rikhi shares these stories along with interpretations of their deep significance for Latif. There will be translations of the poetry in English and, most importantly, songs of Latif in the kaafi form, which are part of the folk oral traditions of Kutch, Gujarat.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai was a great 18th century Sufi poet who, without exaggeration, can be called the Voice of Sindh. His poetry draws on the power and beauty of Sufi as well as Yogic thought, melding the two philosophies into one poetic and spiritual vision. His major work is the “Shah Jo Risalo” and his poems thrive today as a vibrant oral tradition being widely sung, quoted and loved by both Hindu and Muslim communities in the Sindh and Kutch regions on both sides of the Indo-Pak border.

In a world where women voices were unheard of, Latif took popular love legends of the region and spoke through the voices of different women protagonists, to weave a web of poetry that plays tantalizingly between the levels of ishq-e-majaazi, worldly love, and ishq-e-haqeeqi, spiritual love.

The duration of the program will be around 90 minutes.

Vipul Rikhi is a poet, fiction writer, translator and singer, and a co-creator of the web archive 'Ajab Shahar'. His work with Kabir Project includes extensive writings and translations in the field of Bhakti, Sufi and Baul poetry. In the course of these journeys he has developed a deep love for singing mystic poetry in the folk music traditions. In his performances, he likes to bring equal emphasis to the poetry and its resonances in our lives as to the sheer beauty of many of the folk tunes. He is also the author of a novel and collections of poetry and short stories.

EK Soirachari Rajar Katha
Thu May 3, 8:00 PM
Shudrka Hyderabad
The play, “Ek Soirachari Rajar Katha” (The Story of a Despot) has drawn from Camus' “Caligula” the concept of deification of emperors which was common to the pagan world, the Greek and Macedonian kings. Raja (the king) discovers on the death of his sister and lover, Aparupa, that people die and they are not happy. From this point on, obsessed by his search for the absolute, poisoned with contempt and horror, he tries to exercise, through murders and systematic perversion of all values. He rejects friendship, love, simple human solidarity, and the concepts of good and evil. He takes literally all those around him like Taruni, his poet-friend, and forces them to see things logically, and levels everything around him through the force of his rejection. But if his truth involves revolting against destiny, his mistake is to deny humanity. One cannot destroy everything without destroying one's self. This is why Raja depopulates the world around him and, faithful to his own logic, decides to strangle Kamini, his mistress, uttering his gospel of hate at everything around him. This play is the story of a superior suicide, as described by Camus. It is the most human of stories and the most tragic of errors. Faithless to humanity out of faith in himself, he accepts to die for having understood that no one can save himself by himself, and that one cannot be free while opposing humanity. The play remains universally relevant. It represents the face of contemporary despotism, not only in terms of the whimsical madness of rulers, but also in terms of how people react to such rule with a glimmer of hope for the future.

I Dream Before I Take The Stand
Fri May 18, 8:00 PM
Manch Theatre
I Dream Before I Take The Stand is a "feminist classic" written by the famous playwright Arlene Hutton. She is the author of Last Train to Nibroc (2000 New York Drama League Best Play nomination) and the Shaker drama As It Is In Heaven, both of which were selected for Smith & Kraus Best Women Playwrights anthologies.
In this thirty-minute one-act play a defense lawyer cross-examines a woman during her testimony in a sexual assault case—and in doing so, horribly distorts her perfectly innocent walk in the park. The questions tear her deep down. The defense attorney rips off her dignity torturing her verbally through his abusive questions. This Play makes for a riveting piece of theater with the writing being pithy and fierce.

It is often the complexity of our problems, the hardships that we triumph upon, that makes life worthy of living, that gives us experiences to learn from, stories to share.

Wouldn't it thus be interesting, to watch what happens when unique individuals with incredibly unique personalities chance upon an unexpected meeting one fine evening?
What stories would emerge when the very nature of humanity is discussed and presented via unique experiences. Anecdotes that remind us of the humanity we are all a part of, stories that teach, entertain, yet intrigue. For when the topic is as complex as life itself, words may not always be said. This program is an attempt to offer a holistic understanding of art and explore the depths of meaning presented by the language of art. Dance, music or art springs from the depths of the human heart. Most often, this essence is missed in the technical presentation of the art form. Taken in isolation, the technicalities remain rigid scientific principles that, apart from the skilled artist, are inaccessible to a vast majority of population. The essence of art lies in its connection with the feelings of the soul. This is the true language of art. Taken in unison, the art form, whether dance or music, becomes a refreshing beacon of light for all of humanity – both the performer and the passive observer.

About The Play - Rajkumar has been requested to write a poem for a compilation to be published. If you knew Rajkumar you’d realize the absurdity of the request.

In eighty minutes monologue, Rajkumar tells us about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village and the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in this drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The filmy mother; her poet brother Pundaleek; Raghu, the school hero; old man Radhey; and the anonymous ‘Truckwala dost’. As Rajkumar talks, the five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years…and Rajkumar realizes that everyone has a story inside them.

What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). We also exchange feedback and constructively critique each other's works. Entry is free, anyone with an interest in writing can walk in. Bring your writing devices and we’re all set! We promise to provide you with good coffee and a super-creative conversation. We have Write Club sessions every Saturday afternoon – 3 to 6 PM

Movie Screening- "PRATIDWANDI"
Sat May 19, 5:00 PM
HYDERABAD CINEPHILES
Screening of Movie "PRATIDWANDI"

PRATIDWANDI is a 1970 Indian Bengali drama film written and directed by Satyajit Ray based on the novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay.

The film is set in the decade of a wide range of political turmoil in India during partition. The protagonist Siddhartha is forced to give up his study of medicine and his ambition of becoming a doctor at the demise of his father. He makes several fruitless attempts to secure a job but he doesn't get any due to rampant unemployment. He finds his only solace in Keya, who loves him but is troubled by the problems in her own family. A large part of the narrative is dominated by Ray's allusions to the moral decadence of the city and the youth in particular. During several scenes, Ray makes use of dream sequences and memory sequences to portray the thoughts of Siddhartha.

Kuch Kahi - Kuch Ankahi
Sun May 20, 8:00 PM
Kissago
It is often the complexity of our problems, the hardships that we triumph upon, that makes life worthy of living, that gives us experiences to learn from, stories to share.

Wouldn't it thus be interesting, to watch what happens when unique individuals with incredibly unique personalities chance upon an unexpected meeting one fine evening?
What stories would emerge when the very nature of humanity is discussed and presented via unique experiences. Anecdotes that remind us of the humanity we are all a part of, stories that teach, entertain, yet intrigue. For when the topic is as complex as life itself, words may not always be said. Kuch Kahi - Kuch Ankahi?

The Language of (He)Art
Thu May 24, 8:00 PM
Mrs. Rashme Ramakrishnan
