I Dream Before I Take The Stand
Fri May 18, 8:00 PM
Manch Theatre
I Dream Before I Take The Stand is a "feminist classic" written by the famous playwright Arlene Hutton. She is the author of Last Train to Nibroc (2000 New York Drama League Best Play nomination) and the Shaker drama As It Is In Heaven, both of which were selected for Smith & Kraus Best Women Playwrights anthologies.
In this thirty-minute one-act play a defense lawyer cross-examines a woman during her testimony in a sexual assault case—and in doing so, horribly distorts her perfectly innocent walk in the park. The questions tear her deep down. The defense attorney rips off her dignity torturing her verbally through his abusive questions. This Play makes for a riveting piece of theater with the writing being pithy and fierce.

PRATIDWANDI is a 1970 Indian Bengali drama film written and directed by Satyajit Ray based on the novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay.

The film is set in the decade of a wide range of political turmoil in India during partition. The protagonist Siddhartha is forced to give up his study of medicine and his ambition of becoming a doctor at the demise of his father. He makes several fruitless attempts to secure a job but he doesn't get any due to rampant unemployment. He finds his only solace in Keya, who loves him but is troubled by the problems in her own family. A large part of the narrative is dominated by Ray's allusions to the moral decadence of the city and the youth in particular. Kuch Kahi - Kuch Ankahi
Sun May 20, 8:00 PM
Kissago
It is often the complexity of our problems, the hardships that we triumph upon, that makes life worthy of living, that gives us experiences to learn from, stories to share.

Wouldn't it thus be interesting, to watch what happens when unique individuals with incredibly unique personalities chance upon an unexpected meeting one fine evening?
What stories would emerge when the very nature of humanity is discussed and presented via unique experiences. Anecdotes that remind us of the humanity we are all a part of, stories that teach, entertain, yet intrigue. For when the topic is as complex as life itself, words may not always be said. Kuch Kahi - Kuch Ankahi?

This Play Is written and developed by all the actors and Krishna Shukla

Directed By Krihsna Shukla

The Language of (He)Art
Thu May 24, 8:00 PM
Mrs. Rashme Ramakrishnan
This program is an attempt to offer a holistic understanding of art and explore the depths of meaning presented by the language of art. Dance, music or art springs from the depths of the human heart. Most often, this essence is missed in the technical presentation of the art form. Taken in isolation, the technicalities remain rigid scientific principles that, apart from the skilled artist, are inaccessible to a vast majority of population. The essence of art lies in its connection with the feelings of the soul. This is the true language of art. Taken in unison, the art form, whether dance or music, becomes a refreshing beacon of light for all of humanity – both the performer and the passive observer.

About The Play - Rajkumar has been requested to write a poem for a compilation to be published. If you knew Rajkumar you’d realize the absurdity of the request.

In eighty minutes monologue, Rajkumar tells us about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village and the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in this drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The filmy mother; her poet brother Pundaleek; Raghu, the school hero; old man Radhey; and the anonymous ‘Truckwala dost’. As Rajkumar talks, the five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years…and Rajkumar realizes that everyone has a story inside them.

Addabaazi on Thootukudi Violence
Sun May 27, 7:30 PM

13 ppl were shot dead in Tuticorin to continue the environmentally degrading yet profitable business of Sterlite company (a subsidiary of Vedanta group)

Many local ppl and workers were protesting against Sterlite copper unit of Vedanta group from many days. They were asking to shut down the copper production as its pollutants are causing health hazards among local ppl and it is also damaging the local soil and waterbed causing loss of crops. In order to curb down the protest, police used brutal force like snipers on the local ppl. In this state-supported action, 13 ppl died due to police firing. A protest which was for a better environment and a hazard free life has been crushed by the state machinery in order to let the Sterlite group continue with the operations at Tuticorin.
This clearly shows a clear nexus between the big businesses like Vedanta group and the political class. A very clear support by the state for the benefits of business class is evident here. The government has supported Vedanta group before also by giving free lands and letting them exploit the natural resources at many of its facilities. Be it Congress or BJP, all governments have helped Vedanta group to continue hazardous operations of its plants in past. There is clear evidence also which tells that the Vedanta group gives donations to Congress as well as BJP. In return, these government protects the Vedanta groups profitable yet hazardous businesses. Such heinous nexus among the business groups and government shall be opposed by all.

We at Lamakaan are organising an event for general Discussion on this brutality by the state in Thootukudi (Tuticorin).

You all are requested to be part of this "Addabaazi" and be a part of this discussion.

ALL ARE WELCOME. ENTRY FREE & OPEN TO ALL!!!

Chitraa: A Tale of Love - A Play
Sat Jun 2, 7:30 PM
Anshulika
Chitraa is a modernized English translation of Rabindranath Tagore's Chitraa- a one act play. It is considered one of the highest works of Tagore.

The story of Chitrangada is a simple one, taken from the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata; Arjuna, then in celibacy roams through the jungles reaches Manipur which is ruled by princess Chitra; a woman who has been born and brought up like a man, a fierce warrior and archer.

She meets Arjuna one day and falls in love with her but knowing the fact that she is not a typical woman she adorned herself in bracelets, anklets etc and comes to Arjuna to express her desire to marry him. Ajuna refuses.

So Chitra, dejected by the rejection seeks the help of God Madana to change her into a more feminine, fair and beautiful woman.

After the boon she transforms and comes to Arjuna again as a completely different woman. Will Arjuna accept her? Fall in love with her? Are men really visual?

Why does a woman have to deck herself up for the attention of a Man?

Why is fairness of the skin a prerequisite quality for a woman to be taken as beautiful?

these are some of the questions the play goes on to answer.

Chitra played by Anshulika Kapoor & Archana Kariappa

Arjuna played by Surya Vasishta

Madana played by Nevin Pearl & Subhabrata Kundu

Vasantha played by Shashwath Malli

Screening Judgement at Nuremberg
Sat Jun 9, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
MOVIE SCREENING - JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG DESCRIPTION - After the end of World War II, the world gradually became aware of the full extent of the war crimes perpetrated by the Third Reich. In 1948, a series of trials were held in Nuremberg, Germany, by an international tribunal, headed by American legal and military officials, with the intent of bringing to justice those guilty of crimes against humanity. However, by that time most of the major figures of the Nazi regime were either dead or long missing, and in the resulting legal proceedings American judges often found themselves confronting the question of how much responsibility someone held who had "just followed orders." Judgment at Nuremberg is a dramatized version of the proceedings at one of these trials, in which Judge Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy) is overseeing the trials of four German judges -- most notably Dr. Ernst Janning (Burt Lancaster) and Emil Hahn (Werner Klemperer) -- accused of knowingly sentencing innocent men to death in collusion with the Nazis. Mithila painting (or Madhubani painting as it is now beginning to be called) is a style of Indian painting practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar and the adjoining parts of Terai in Nepal.
Madhubani literally means forests of honey. These paintings were done traditionally by the women on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas.

“THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST”

A Trivial Comedy for Serious People.

Directed by Rathna Shekar Reddy

Date: 10th June 2018
Time: 07:30PM
Venue: Lamakaan, Hyderabad.

Entry by Donation Rs.200/-

Written with subtlety and wit, Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” has survived all possible trials of time and has catered to the amusement of its audiences to become one of the most famous plays in English literature. The playwright attempts to highlight the pretentious lifestyle of the Victorian society only to mock it using humour, contradictions, and sarcasm. One of his most famous works, the play provides a window-view into his own life which aroused great controversies for him. However, this style is commendable and his “comedy of manners” is evergreen, as his play holds the extraordinary ability of being relatable by any societal structure.

“The Importance of Being Earnest” revolves around two bachelors, Jack 'John' Worthing and Algernon 'Algy' Moncrieff. They both lead a double life, aided by a fictional alterego, to escape the hassles caused by societal obligations. John’s alterego is his wicked younger brother, Ernest; and Algy’s is his permanent invalid friend, Bunbury, who are both indispensably resourceful. They attempt to win the hearts of two women, Gwenolden Fairfax and Cecily Cardew, respectively. However, complications arise when the women discover that their beaus are not as “Earnest” as they claim to be. To top it all off, the conflict reaches its zenith with the formidable Lady Bracknell’s earnest disapproval of their sordid affair. Will Jack and Algy successfully overcome all obstacles to get the women of their dreams?

With jealous fiancées, mixed-up lies, a villainous matriarch and a controversial handbag, this play guarantees an evening of laughter. 'Bunbury' with us through this whimsical tale of deception, disguise, misadventure and love, and witness one of the most famous comedies to have ever been written!

During several scenes, Ray makes use of dream sequences and memory sequences to portray the thoughts of Siddhartha.

Sun May 20, 8:00 PM

It is often the complexity of our problems, the hardships that we triumph upon, that makes life worthy of living, that gives us experiences to learn from, stories to share.

Wouldn't it thus be interesting, to watch what happens when unique individuals with incredibly unique personalities chance upon an unexpected meeting one fine evening?
What stories would emerge when the very nature of humanity is discussed and presented via unique experiences. Anecdotes that remind us of the humanity we are all a part of, stories that teach, entertain, yet intrigue. For when the topic is as complex as life itself, words may not always be said.

Write Club Hyderabad helps you pen your thoughts, spill your mind and finally make an appointment with the writer in your head. We conduct free, weekly events that foster writing. Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). We also exchange feedback and constructively critique each other's works. Entry is free, anyone with an interest in writing can walk in. Bring your writing devices and we’re all set! We promise to provide you with good coffee and a super-creative conversation. We have Write Club sessions every Saturday afternoon – 3 to 6 PM

DATE AND TIME - 8TH JUNE @ 19:30 HRS VENUE - LAMAKAAN , BANJARA HILLS, HYDERABAD

Drawing started as a punishment for me when I had to draw biology diagrams all by myself..but it helped me in realizing that drawing is what I am born to do. This could be your biology diagram! Hope to see you there!
