We invite you to eavesdrop in our café and see how the conversation of the young ones shape and reshape with each reset.

Rule of the law or mobocracy?
Tue Jul 24, 4:00 PM
United Against Hate
The on-going hate spree against Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, Rationalists and political dissenters that has engulfed the whole country into a bizarre state of madness has of late converted into the lynch phenomena. A visibly "random" mob reasons out on its own to punish a person based on "false/fake" information/narrative being peddled about the person or his/her identity which doesn't comprise of the similar belief, similar outlook and similar socio-political views to that of theirs.

We, the conscientious citizens of the country need to stand up to this mobocracy and extend our struggle to curb the menace of mob lynching and hate in the country.

Irani Chai & HyderabadConnection
Thu Jul 26, 7:30 PM
Yunus Lasania & Lamakaan Programming Team
Irani cafes and their chai, biscuits and snacks have served Hyderabad for decades. Names such as Garden, Grand (hotel), Olympia, etc evoke nostalgia among many Hyderabadis, who have spent hours in discussion while sipping away cups of Irani chai. One could say that it is a way of life for us.

But many might not know that Irani chai is not what Iranians drink in Iran (tea is consumed sans milk there), but because the cafes are run by Iranian owners whose families have settled in the city (and in other places like Mumbai and Pune) decades ago. So who are these owners exactly? If you have always wondered and would like to know, come join us for an interactive session with owners of some of the oldest Irani cafes in town. The speakers/guests include Mr. Mohammed Jaleel Farookh Rooz, the owner of Grand hotel, started in 1935 and believed to be Hyderabad’s oldest surviving Irani outlet and other Irani Hotels Proprietors.

ENTRY IS FREE & OPEN TO ALL!!

Love Thy Bacteria!
Tue Jul 31, 7:30 PM
Program Council Lamakaan
Speaker: Satya Sagar

They are tiny, invisible living organisms which are key to the survival and propagation of all life on Planet Earth.

And yet, the key metaphors used in the description of bacteria and infection are drawn from warfare –‘resistant’ bacteria ‘invading’ our bodies, antibiotics as ‘magic bullets’ and so on. How does this mentality of the battle field- affect the very questions of medical research on infectious diseases? Are we imposing deep rooted social and political prejudices on the concepts of medicine and our understanding of bacteria?

Modern medicine in turn has also become the source of new terms for warfare. Terrorism is compared to an ‘infectious disease’, the ‘terrorist’ dubbed a ‘virus’ and the response involves carrying out ‘surgical strikes’ to create ‘sterile zones’. It is an approach to which ‘resistance’ and death can be the only logical outcome.

Is it time for us to change the way we look at both microbes and terrorists?

K-Circle Quiz of the Month
Sat Aug 4, 4:30 PM
K-Circle Quiz Club
K-Circle is today India's oldest quiz club, formed in 1972, and is based in the twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. This Saturday would be the K-Circle Quiz of the Month at Pheonix Arena which would be a lively, engaging and informally informative quiz session that anybody is welcome to attend!

A motley group, K-Circle is open to members of all ages. We are a truly informal club as we don’t have a form for new entrants to fill. There are no registrations, no frills, no badges, no pins/medals, no passwords. . . if you come in late, you just may have to perch on the window sill, but that's about it! The quiz would be a team event, with the teams being formed on spot. Do bring your friends and family along as well for what should surely be a thrilling Saturday evening!

K-Circle quizzes have the well-deserved reputation of being thoroughly researched, highly interesting and innovative (far removed from the mugging-from-GK books sort of quiz that is all too common hereabouts). We meet every Saturday at a pre-decided location in the twin cities.
Information regarding upcoming sessions is updated on the website - www.kcircle.com
As well as our Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/kcircle/

Kuch Kahi - Kuch Ankahi
Sat Aug 4, 8:00 PM

It is often the complexity of our problems, the hardships that we triumph upon, that makes life worthy of living, that gives us experiences to learn from, stories to share. Wouldn't it thus be interesting, to watch what happens when unique individuals with incredibly unique personalities chance upon an unexpected meeting one fine evening? What stories would emerge when the very nature of humanity is discussed and presented via unique experiences. Anecdotes that remind us of the humanity we are all a part of, stories that teach, entertain, yet intrigue. For when the topic is as complex as life itself, words may not always be said. Addabaazi on Increasing Rapes
Tue Aug 7, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
The recent nightmarish stories of sedating, drugging, beating, raping of young children at Muzaffarpur Children's Shelter Home came as a shock to the nation.

The Perpetrators, who ran the shelter, sexually exploited, systematically abused the power and raped minors for several months.

The shelter home came under the spotlight following a social audit report by TISS which detected large-scale complaints from inmates of sexual exploitation. Medical examination of the inmates confirmed sexual exploitation in the case of 30 of the 44 girls. The police registered a case against 11 people including Brajesh Thakur and Madhu Kumari on May 31. All 44 girls have since been shifted to short-stay homes in Madhubani, Patna and Mokama.

These horrifying tales of rapes reflect where India is heading, to an unsafe place for girls/women and children.

We invite you to this Addabaazi, an informal discussion on this topic.

ALL ARE WELCOME!!!

Coen Brothers II
Wed Aug 8, 7:00 PM
Cinephiles Film Club
The Big Lebowski (1998) belongs to the era of Hollywood when filmmakers were finding ways of updating old genres in idiosyncratic ways. Robert Altman and Quention Tarantino are two other prominent names alongside the Coen Brothers who excelled in this vein. Lebowski takes the plot of a typical crime thriller and invests it with digressions that are more concerned with capturing a personality and a subculture than with the unfolding of a straight plot. The film has spawned a major cult-like subculture of its own despite initially mixed performance at the box office.

MARXIST STUDY CIRCLE
Thu Aug 9, 7:00 PM
IN DEFENSE OF REASON
In Defense of Reason INVITES ALL TO ATTEND MARXIST STUDY CIRCLE

9th August’18 Day 1 : Topic - Dialectical Materialism
Timing : 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

10th August’18 Day 2 : Topic - Historical Materialism
Timing : 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

We are living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The morbid symptoms of this crisis are discernible in different parts of the world in the form of the rise of fascist and semi-fascist forces. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victim of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system and its replacement by a socialist system which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. And there is a name to that science of revolution — Marxism! Despite all attempts to bury it deep down in the earth, the specter of Marxism continues to haunt the rulers all over the world and more so in the current age of crisis. It is with the aim of understanding this science of revolution that ‘In Defense of Reason’, a discussion forum, is organizing a Marxist study circle. The first two sessions on 9th and 10th August 2018 will cover the general introduction of Marxist philosophy – Dialectical & Historical Materialism

Discussion to be led by: Anand Singh (political activist who writes in workers’ Newspaper “Mazdoor Bigul” and Marxist Theoretical Journal “The Anvil”)

Venue: Lamakaan Open Cultural Space, Banjara Hills,

Fri Aug 10, 7:00 PM

Pranav Pingle Reddy
OCCUPIED: A story about the spirit of beautiful Palestine, told through the eyes of young-generation Palestinians, within their war-torn circumstances, using the arts to fight the occupation.

My team and I at Mirage Media, having recently toured and extensively documented the West Bank and the rest of Palestine, have not only witnessed the horrifying reality of military occupation, but also of social and political control and of pathological bullying.

In the midst of violence, anger, and struggle in this beautiful State, our story portrays resistance with the utmost soul of believing in a better tomorrow, and choosing to express dissent through art.

What if our life had a reset button? Let’s see what it brings out? Does it make things more complicated or does it simplify them? People say things like, “if only I could start over?” I would do everything right. Life could be only learnt by living it. By the time we learn how to live, its shame not much life is left. We invite you to eavesdrop in our café and see how the conversation of the young ones shape and reshape with each reset.

Hide and Seek (Hindi) 8:30 pm
We live in the world of multiple identities. Do we change our identity like characters in a film or a play? Does our behavior change according to the surroundings and people around us? Is it possible for a person to reveal his true identity to someone, even himself? Well, two revolutionaries try this ….let’s see where they end up?

You can also add yourself to our subscribers' mailing list by sending an email to kckcircle@gmail.com.
