Remembering Operation Polo
Sun Sep 16, 7:30 PM
Yunus Lasania & Lamakaan Programming Council
On September 17, 1948, the Indian army which was sent by the government had taken over the princely state of Hyderabad. Titled 'Operation Polo' and known as 'Police Action', the event annexed areas of present day Maharashtra and Karnataka, which were then under Hyderabad, to the Indian union.

The operation was initiated after Osman Ali Khan, the last and seventh monarch of the Asaf Jahi dynasty was deliberating between joining the Indian union and staying independent.

Anything but a simple takeover, Operation Polo had resulted in thousands of deaths, apparently at the hands of the Indian army (preceded by bouts of violence against citizens by the militia Razakaars run by Kasim Razvi, who later became the leader of the MIM). September 17 this year marks 70 years since the incident took place.

Mr. Burugula Narsing Rao (86) , then a college student, and someone who witnessed the murder of journalist Shoaibullah Khan (by the Razakaars) and what had transpired during the period will be speaking at Lamakaan on the occasion. So come join us for a discussion.

Conscious Fashion
Wed Sep 19, 5:00 PM
Namrata Manot
The dyeing part of the process is a major culprit where maximum harmful chemicals are used. Hence the need to appreciate and apply natural dyes on fabrics is a sustainable solution in the long run. Natural dyeing would cause no air, water or soil pollution and no harm to human skin if the herbs and minerals used in dyeing are ayurvedic and non toxic.

Many eco friendly companies and organisations claim they use LOW IMPACT DYES, but they do affect the environment and the human body. We need to adopt a no-impact dyeing because we are trying to maintain the natural life cycle

we would have a deep conversation on sustainability in dyes, organic clothing, and natural dyeing as a solution. I have been working on conscious fashion, natural dyed clothing and cretaing awareness on natural dyes for past 4 years and done several local and residential workshops in other locations.

Topic: Understanding Electoral Rolls and Voter Registration

The Election Commission of India has launched the National Electoral Rolls Purification and Authentication Programme in 2015 to streamline electoral rolls by detecting anomalies. With the Telangana elections being held in the upcoming months, the commission has announced a special summary revision of the electoral rolls. INVITES ALL TO ATTEND
Screening of Film
"IN MEMORY OF FRIENDS"
It documents the violence and terror in Punjab, India – a land torn apart by religious fundamentalists and a repressive government. After examining the political turmoil of the late 1970′s and the rise of Sikh fundamentalism, the film focuses on the legacy of Bhagat Singh, a young socialist executed by the British in 1931 at the age of 23. Singh has since become a legend. Today the State eulogizes him as a nationalist while Sikh separatists portray him as a Sikh militant. In fact, Singh was neither. Just prior to his death he wrote a book which he entitled ‘Why I Am An Atheist.’ Bhagat Singhs idea of Secularism and Socialism are still very much relevant and worth understanding
WITH GROWING HINDU AND MUSLIM FUNDAMENTALISM ACROSS INDIA, THE IMPORTANCE OF SUCH A POLITICAL, IDEOLOGICAL, INTELLECTUAL AND HUMAN DOCUMENT AS THAT PRODUCED BY ANAND PATWARDHAN IS IMMENSE.
The Screening will be followed by a Discussion in which all the viewers are welcome to participate.

NEO LIBERAL CAPITALISM IN INDIA
Thu Oct 4, 4:30 PM
Program Council Lamakaan
NEO LIBERAL CAPITALISM IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA

“Neo-liberal capitalism” is the term used to describe the phase of capitalism where restrictions on the global flows of commodities and capital, including capital in the form of finance, have been substantially removed. Since such removal happens under pressure from globally-mobile (or international) finance capital, neo-liberal capitalism is characterized by the hegemony of international finance capital, with which the big capitals in particular countries get integrated, and which ensures that a common set of “neo-liberal” policies are pursued by all countries across the globe.
The emergence of such international finance capital is itself the outcome of the process of centralization of capital, which has attained hegemonic position in our society. To know more about the impact of Neo Liberal capitalism on Indian society and discuss about the future, all are invited to attend the talk on “ Neo Liberal Capitalism in Contemporary India” by Shri Prabhat Patnaik.

About the speaker:
Prof. Prabhat Patnaik is an internationally renowned Marxist economist and political commentator. At the time of his retirement in 2010, he held the Sukhamoy Chakravarty Chair in Planning and Development at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning (CESP), JNU, New Delhi, where he had taught from 1974. He was the vice chairperson of the Kerala State Planning Board and was part of a four-member high-power task force of the United Nations to recommend reform measures for the global financial system. He is the editor of the journal Social Scientist.

Dastangoi: Dastan Miyan Azaad ki
Fri Oct 5, 7:30 PM
Program Council Lamakaan
Dastangoi [made up of two Persian words: 'Dastan' meaning long tale and 'goi' meaning to tell it], is the lost art form of Urdu storytelling, revived in recent years. The original Dastans were epic tales of adventure and magic, among which Dastans of Amir Hamza were most prominent. In recent years new Dastans have expanded to include folk and other tales as well and the language has widened from chaste Urdu to include Hindustani and Hindi. The beauty of Dastangoi lies in the fact that it is the purest form of storytelling, which relies heavily on just two factors: the beauty of the language and the skill of the narrator.

Dastan Miyan Azad ki

This Dastan is a carefully curated selection of 3 nuggets of different moods, from 'Fasana-e-Azad'. Authored by Pandit Ratan Naath Sarshaar, this gem of Urdu literature was hugely popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. It is a compilation of anecdotes and encounters of its central character- Miyan Azad and brings alive, in its word pictures, the Lucknow of the post-1857 era. The Dastan is embellished with the element of music, in carefully chosen songs based on classical ragas, highlighting the different moods.

The ageless appeal of this Urdu classic lies in its rich tapestry of colloquial language, ornamental expressions and lyrical writing peppered with occasional couplets, to describe festivals, rituals, festivities, mourning, feasts etc. It’s like a brilliant multi faceted diamond, flashing various moods and flavours. Published in book form first in 1880, 'Fasana-e-Azad' was serialised from December 1878 to December 1879 in 'Avadh Akhbar', an Urdu weekly published from Lucknow by Munshi Nawal Kishore.

The Dastangos

VALENTINA TRIVEDI is an educationist and performance artist. She has performed at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh, Bookraroo Childrens’ Literature Festival, Malaysia, apart from performances pan India. As a Dastango, apart from performing in Urdu and Hindustani, she has also adapted Satyajit Ray’s popular film 'Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne' into a Dastan embellishing it with translations of its original songs.

ASKARI NAQVI is Lucknow based performing artist. Soz Khwani and Dastangoi are two different Art forms he performs. He is also a student of music and getting trained under Pandit Amit Mukerjee. He has performed Soz Khwani and Dastangoi to national and international acclaim.

"Soz-khwani”, is a poetic & musical expression of a battle against tyranny in Karbala 1400 years ago by a group of seventy two people. This poetic and musical form is a beautiful expression of human emotions weaved in Indian symbols, narration of life and culture. This Art form is performed traditionally during the month of Muharram. Muharram is month of mourning for Shia Muslims. The form is performed during the close gatherings in an event called the “Majalis” where people gather for mourning for the sacrifices made in Karbala. The Art form has really been an important tradition of Awadh in India in terms of classical Awadhi, Urdu and some Persian poetic forms. Soz-khwani is also very much part of the folk music traditions of Awadh though not widely appreciated as they have been only closely associated to personal religious beliefs and traditions. The compositions for Soz-Khwani are based on the Indian Ragas. The Art form was part of many Shia family traditions in Awadh but now there are very few families who are still holding this tradition. The family Askari comes from belongs to a ‘Qasba’ (town) situated in the heart of Awadh called Mustafabad in Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh in India. The family has been practicing and has preserved the Art form in a similar way like any other oral cultural traditions. But now there are very few in our generation who are practicing these classical forms.

Dastangoi: Dastan Miyan Azaad ki
Sun Oct 7, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team

Digital Satyagraha
Thu Oct 11, 6:00 PM
Srinivas Kodali
In this lecture, Carl Malamud will discuss efforts to make government and non-government information more broadly available, efforts that are part of a global movement to make access to knowledge a reality for all. He’ll discuss his own work in India and the United States to make government information, such as technical standards and laws, more available and will discuss the different treatment of “edicts of government” under the U.S. and India copyright acts and constitutions. He will then discusss efforts to make other important information, such as scientific journal articles available, and the status of the teaching exemption under Indian law, as well as efforts to make “works of government” available to the public. In addition to discussing the law, Carl will discuss how individuals can help change the way our government work, drawing on the lessons of Satyagraha from Gandhiji and from diverse examples of civil resistance throughout the world, such as the efforts Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States.

Carl Malamud is the founder of Public.Resource.Org (“Public Resource”), a California-based NGO widely credited with placing many large government databases online and then working with governments to get them to do this themselves. In the United States, Public Resource helped pioneer the free law movement by placing historical opinions of the U.S. Court of Appeals on the Internet for the first time. Public Resource also helped place numerous other resources on-line such as 14,000 hours of video from U.S. congressional hearings and assisted the Obama transition team in changing how the Federal Register, the official gazette of the United States, is published. For the last few years, Public Resource has been working intensively in India, including an effort to make available all Indian Standards for free on the net, an issue that is the subject of Public Internet Litigation suit in the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi. Carl started the first radio station on the Internet and is the author of 9 books, including most recently (with Sam Pitroda), Code Swaraj: Field Notes from the Standards Satyagraha.

Kommune
Bring Kommune to your city:
Through the years, we've had festivals, story slams, made memories and experiences throughout the country. But we've faltered—see, the Kommune team is based primarily in Mumbai, and we sometimes forget that the Kommuneity is nationwide. So we've decided to launch a city plan that has Kommune visiting different parts of the country, looking for stories and talent throughout. We're also looking to start city chapters, tiny pockets of the Kommuneity who love the performing arts as much as we do and would like to volunteer with us. And Hyderabad, with your food, stories, and history, we couldn't help but keep you on our list. So join us as we discuss bringing storytelling to a city seeped in them, the performing arts to a city that was defined the word 'art' for so many of us. Hyderabad, help us turn the Kommuneity into a beautiful revolution.

Kommuneity Weekend:
Kommuneity - we've had workshops, and we've had story slams. Our workshops have you walking in with words and walking out with stories - stories you never knew existed, stories you never thought were worth sharing. Our story slams are what unique Sundays are made of, complete with tellers breaking down their walls and finding support in strangers who look a lot less strange by the end of the evening. Both events however, define the Kommuneity for us. So we decided to combine the two to give you a weekend with all things Kommune, a weekend you'll want to repeat again and again. Welcome to the Hyderabad edition of the Kommuneity weekend, where we marry the beauty of learning with the promise of growing.

So Hyderabad, we come to you with a Saturday of learning in the workshop, followed by a Sunday of using everything you've learned in the story slam. The theme for this story slam is 'Taste' - from food to memories, tell us about your favourite taste. Tell us if sadness tastes like your mother's food gone cold or if happiness tastes like a the rain after months of waiting. In a city that loves food, tell us a bit about your swaad.

Participants will receive complimentary writing material. After all, what's a writer without a book? So join Kommune as they create, captivate, and collaborate at this Kommuneity weekend!

The Original Last Wish Baby
Sat Oct 13, 8:00 PM
Dramanon
One of Dramanon’s longest running plays - ‘THE ORIGINAL LAST WISH BABY written by William Seebring, premiered in Manipal in 2005. Since then it has been performed in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and finally in Hyderabad in 2007. Join us as we present The ORIGINAL LAST WISH BABY in a new avatar with a more contemporary form and a fresh structure while retaining the essence of the original storyline.

The play tells the story of a capitalistic India that cashes on anything that is worth commercializing. In this case it is a miracle in modern times, of a baby born without a heart in Mumbai. The characters in the play are everyday people, and the play is a parody on modern Indian life. It shows normal, everyday people as being manipulative, even in their well-meaning acts. Meanwhile the media is shown as seeking to scintillate, even the smallest of acts, if it proves to provide those fifteen minutes of fame. If seen closely, the metaphor of the 'heartless baby' is quite an example in itself of an industrialized, corporate world, quite reminiscent of the literature from the post industrialization period. The story explores various facets of Human existence, exploring a loss of identity, struggle with materialism, and the definition of life and death.

Peppered with wit and humor, poetry, delicately choreographed movement pieces, audio visual transitions and finally original music that maintains the rhythm and pulse of the story, The ORIGINAL LAST WISH BABY is indeed a roller coaster ride of laughter, tears, contemplation and introspection.

Further, the commission has been working with various state governments to improve the voter lists. With the Telangana elections being held in the upcoming months, the commission has announced a special summary revision of the electoral rolls. At the national level, there are petitions in the Supreme Court demanding the election commission to publish electoral data in text formats instead of scanned pdf.

The elections to the Telangana Assembly are due in the next few months. The Election Commission of India is also in the process of finalising the electoral roll for these elections.

The session will discuss this entire process and help people understand what an electoral roll means, how to get enrolled or get anomalies corrected if your name does not figure in the roll.

The discussants are:
1. Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu: Rakesh has been working on issues related to Right to Information (RTI) for a decade. He is a Data/Information enthusiast & passionate about Governance/Policy issues.

Astraea’s program works with diverse sexualities in India. It is to deepen capacity building and “accompaniment” support to grantee partners over the course of this year. Akshay Khanna is engaged to develop this program to coordinate responsive capacity building opportunities and support Astraea in documenting the impact of grant making as well as broader shifts in the current political, movement and funding landscape.

Dr. Akshay Khanna will follow-up with each of the members individually(organizational) to set up a time for an in-person visit in this first phase of this project, which is focused on relationship building and meaningful assessment. Based on conversations, capacity building activities can be developed from July to September from Astraea and learn from peers. We look forward to putting in place more strategies for shared learning across our partners, especially in this political climate.
Broadly, the first stage of the project is an assessment of the capacity building priorities of community organisation and support organisations. To this end, we are planning to hold a session so that we can explore few themes such as Formation of Transgender Board in the State, Right to Livelihood ,Education and Right to freedom.(issues suggested by the core team)

Court Martial is a gripping, engrossing and powerful play written by Swadesh Deepak. More than Five thousand shows of this play have been performed across the country by various theatre groups. Great performances, hard hitting dialogues, intense dramatic moments and a fantastic climax make this play one of the most performed Hindi plays in the last 25 years.

Court Martial is the story of a recruit Ramchandar who is accused of killing his senior officer and injuring another. Ramchandar's trial brings startling facts into light that questions the norms of society. This Court Martial is presided by war veteran Col. Surat Singh, accustomed to the brutality of life but is left completely unarmed and broken during the course of this trial. Ramchandar's trial is not only a fight for his life but a fight for a bigger truth. A truth that is more important than his own life.

Spanning 1448 pages there are three judgements with four judges upholding Aadhaar constitutionally and one judge justice Chandrachud dissenting for shutting down Aadhaar.

Soz Khwani: Songs of Lament
Sat Oct 6, 7:30 PM
Program Council Lamakaan

Kommune
Sat Oct 13, 1:00 PM

Write Club Saturday General
Sat Oct 13, 3:00 PM
Write Club Hyderabad
Write Club Hyderabad helps you pen your thoughts, spill your mind and finally make an appointment with the writer in your head. We conduct free, weekly events that foster writing. Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). We also exchange feedback and constructively critique each other's works. Entry is free, anyone with an interest in writing can walk in. Bring your writing devices and we’re all set! We promise to provide you with good coffee and a super-creative conversation. We have Write Club sessions every Saturday afternoon – 3 to 6 PM

Kommune

Time & Date: 8Pm on 13th Oct & 7pm on 14th Oct 2018
