Trampling Dissent
Tue Nov 20, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan
Trampling dissent and absence of democratic spaces in academic institutions

In this event, the topic will be discussed by taking a recent case of eviction of two students from Symbiosis law school Hyderabad who were evicted because they were asking for justice and a due procedural enquiry on sexual harrassment incidences by a professor against many students. The students were evicted without any prior notice and any enquiry into the matter because college administration felt that they are damaging the brand of symbiosis. Such authoritarian decisions by the college administration to curb dissent against students protesting for their rights should be condemned. We extend our solidarity to the two students who are fighting this battle on behalf of the student community to create more open educational spaces.

The two evicted students will join us for the event to tell us about how the students voices against injustice inside the campus of symbiosis law school are regularly suppressed in order to safeguard their public image.

All are Welcome! Entry free and open to all

Kahat Kabira: Songs of Kabir in Malwa tradition

Lamakaan invites one and all to an evening of Kabir Songs with Kaluram Bamaniya.

Kaluram Bamaniya belongs to a vibrant tradition of singing bhakti poets such as Kabir, Gorakhnath, Bananath and Meera in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. He comes from a family of farmers, but has taken to singing as a full time occupation himself. From the early age of 9, Kaluram started accompanying his father, grandfather and uncle on the manjiras. When he was 13 years old he ran away from home and went to Rajasthan, where he absorbed a wide repertoire of songs from an itinerant Mirasi singer Ram Niwas Rao for 1-2 years. For Kaluram, singing Kabir is not merely a profession, it's a way of life. "You get a lot of power, you get fearless by singing Kabir," he says. His impish wit adds colour to the direct simplicity and soulfulness of his songs.

While continuing to be part of the satsang tradition in Malwa, Kaluram and his troupe give many public performances all over India. He sings and plays the 5-stringed tambura and khadtaal and will be accompanied by:
Ram Prasad Parmar on Harmonium,
Devidas Bairagi - Dholak,
Sajjan Singh Parmar - Nagnagaadi
Uttam Singh Bamaniya - Manjira

ALL ARE WELCOME. OPEN TO DONATION.

Brief story: What does a woman really want? What is the meaning of love and
companionship for a woman? Is she restricted by the boundaries of society and the
definitions that people have defined for her? The story of one such woman who is
talkative yet silently resilient, confident yet scared, a fighter but also a victim.
Being trapped in her house is a symbol of the shackles she feels around her. When
she seeks company and love is that a genuine need or a guilty indulgence?
A woman who is frustrated in marriage, is haunted by crank caller, money lender
and also exploited by her perverted brother-in-law, is in love with younger boy and
has no qualms about sharing with an acquaintance her marital problems as well as
private moments spent with her lover?
Anger, frustration, restlessness, hope, regret, guilt and determination are
just some of the inner turmoil of the protagonist.

Women* in Public Spaces
Sun Dec 2, 2:00 PM
Programme Council Lamakaan
Let’s talk about Women* in Public Spaces.

We want to invite you to join us in an open discussion at Lamakaan on the 2nd Dec at 2-4 pm. As part of the exhibition ‘Women* in Public Spaces in Hyderabad’ which will open on the 30th Nov, 6.30 pm at Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad, we want to come together, exchange experiences and ideas, reflect on internalized gender norms, self-regulation and social power structures shaped by patriarchy.

Information about the exhibition:
In the context of the uprising #metoo movement in India, the exhibition ‘Women* in Public Spaces in Hyderabad’ wants to give an impulse to think about the way women* experience the city. The multimedia exhibition pursues the issue of how women* experience Hyderabad in their daily lives, which strategies they develop to navigate public spaces, what restricts their access and hence their social participation and how they fight to (re)claim their city as should be their fundamental right as citizens.

The visitor is introduced to the portraits of various young women* from Hyderabad who are talking about their struggles and concerns navigating the city as well as their visions for a future Hyderabad where they can exist as human beings, exactly the way they want to be. These individual perspectives are embedded in a broader social context by a short film which brings together the thoughts of different local activists and professionals on the issue of women* in public spaces in Hyderabad.

The exhibition is held at Goethe Zentrum Hyderabad from 30th Nov – 6th Dec 2018.

Please bring headphones if possible.

University as a SiteofResistance
Thu Dec 13, 5:30 PM
Mohan and Rajesh
The University as a Site of Resistance analyses massive protests that emerged in the aftermath of Rohith Vemula's death in Hyderabad Central University as well as the Azadi Campaign started by Jawaharlal Nehru University students in Delhi in 2016. Taking Osmania University in Hyderabad as a case study, the book provides an ethnographic account of the emergence of one of India's longest student movements - the movement for Telangana statehood. Since its inception in the 1960s to its culmination in the formation of Telangana state in 2014, students at Osmania University played a decisive role. The book discusses protest strategies, methods and networks among students. It also examines the role played by various caste and sub-caste groups and civil society in making the movement a success. The author argues that contemporary identity based student movements are primarily cultural movements as the traditional caste and class analysis becomes redundant to explain such contemporary collective action. The book establishes these unique resistances as New Social Movements and claim that these movements contribute to the democratization of institutional spaces. In this context, the volume provides a conceptual debate on contemporary cultural politics among university students.

Master key by Gundimeda Sambaiah
Fri Dec 14, 5:30 PM
Lamakaan Programme Council
Master key: Uttar Pradeshlo noorella Dalit Rajakiya charitra (Master key: One hundred years of the history of Dalit politics in Uttar Pradesh, Telugu translation of Dalit Politics in Contemporary India) by Gundimeda Sambaiah, translated by Ashalatha, published by the Hyderabad Book Trust.
Sambaiah’s first book released in August 2018 was Telugunaata Dalit rajakiyalu. Both this and Master key are ground-breaking interventions on Dalit politics in India. Master key goes into Dalit mobilisations for political power, social equality and justice in the important state of Uttar Pradesh, particularly the Bahujan Samaj Party. It examines the debate regarding core themes such as the Hindu–Muslim cleavage in the north and caste in the south; the extent to which Dalits and other backward castes (OBC) base their anti-Brahminism on similar ideologies; and why Dalits in Uttar Pradesh (north India) succeeded in gaining power while they did not do so in the region of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh (south India), where Dalit consciousness is more evolved.

“Having been part of Gundimeda's intellectual journey, I wholeheartedly concur with him in this moment (or, rather, endeavour) of translation. The book makes possible a 'real' debate about the trajectories of Dalit politics across the North India - South India divide. The only critiques worth conducting of socio-political processes in India or elsewhere are immanent ones; and Gundimeda's work, I need add, lends a further worthwhile comparative focus to this dimension. A most promising and productive work for any scholar examining socio-political processes in contemporary India, and for the proponents of a Dalit politics across locales and regional contexts.”

Sasheej Hegde, Professor of Sociology, University of Hyderabad

Sambaiah Gundimeda holds degrees in Political Science from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada, University of Hyderabad and School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Sam writes both in English and Telugu and has published widely that includes books, research papers, book chapters and essays in learned journals. He has been with the School of Policy and Governance at Azim Premji University since July 2014.

Firstly, new comers are more than welcome. (We can even skip the awkward round of introductions in the beginning)
Secondly, here is the link to this session's reading: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oLGqFPDwEew_GhqrXi0EgDJ8bHhwLzrv/view?usp=sharing

A third session. Who would have thought?

The last session was a small group of people, but the discussion was rich and beautiful. Peculiarly though, most people who showed up last time were Law students. Inspired by their company, this session's reading is a classic text from Feminist legal theory: Lucie White's "Subordination, Rhetorical Survival Skills, and Sunday Shoes: Notes on the Hearing of Mrs. G". It is a dazzling piece of legal theory that most Feminist law professors add to their students' required reading list.

But, what's the reading about? It's about how cultural representations and legal norms create a universe where the language of socially subordinated groups is seen as inherently inferior to those of dominant groups. A part of the paper, which I find the most interesting, is about how subordination itself leads the members of that group to employ verbal strategies that mark their speech as different from that of dominant style. She does all this through the story of one "Mrs. G" - a woman subordinated by race, gender and class who is trying to make herself heard in a hearing.

Its a pretty long paper, so we'll only have this one reading for the next session. Although honestly, it only appears long. Much of the text is long footnotes - and all most of the footnotes are doing is referencing to texts with long titles.

Like always, please try and make notes while you do the reading - especially the stuff you found difficult to grasp, or didn't agree with. Then, bring the notes to session so it makes for a spicier session.

Also for the next session, there's some stuff to discuss after we're done with text:
1. Should we change to doing this weekly? Folks in the last session wanted this.
2. Lets come up with a better name for the group.

Finally, if you'd like to keep receiving updates about sessions in the future, please join this FB group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1451288351669247/
We'll try to keep it free of any post apart from ones about the reading group.

You can reach me on FB message if you need any more information: facebook.com/tarungidwani

See you on 16th in the morning? <3

Ek Akeli Aurat
Sun Nov 25, 7:30 PM
Rangadhara Theatre Streams
