Anwar Moazzam Memorial Lecture.
Fri Dec 6, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Lamakaan invites you to Anwar Moazzam Memorial Lecture delivered by Prof. Md. Suleman Siddiqi on Sufism: Past & Present.

The aim of this lecture is to trace the rise and development of Sufi spirituality during the early history of Islam on the one hand and the transition that took place during the later centuries on the other. Sufism is the phenomenon of intense Divine love (‘ishq), remembrance (zikr), contemplation (muraqibah), and beatific vision of God (ruyat-i bari-i taala). It is an exercise to purify the soul (ruh), self (nafs) and heart (dil). It is a transition from this world to the other world. It is a process where the Sufi remains subservient to the commands of God all the time, where his will becomes the Will of God. As Islam moved out of the confines of Arabia, it imbibed local cultures, customs, and traditions, leading to the transition.

About Prof. Md. Suleman Siddiqi: Prof Md. Suleman Siddiqi is a former Vice Chancellor of Osmania University, Hyd. and founder Registrar of MANUU, Hyd.

About Prof. Anwar Moazzam: Prof Anwar Moazzam (1928 – 2023) leaves behind him a large contingent of students, followers, and admirers. His contributions to higher education, the fields of Islamic and South Asian studies, to Urdu language and literature are simply immeasurable. Very few people fit the description of a public intellectual more than Prof Anwar Moazzam did.

All are Welcome!

Film Screening: Rome, Open City
Fri Dec 13, 6:00 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
Join us for the screening and discussion of Roberto Rossellini’s Rome, Open City (1945)

Hyderabad Cinephiles will be screening Rome, Open City at 6pm on Friday, 13 December. One of the earliest films of the Italian neorealism, Rome, Open City follows the lives of the resistance fighters and common working people of Italy under Nazi occupation. It exposes the brutality of fascism and is relevant even today. While 21st century fascism differs from its Italian and German counterparts in many ways, there are also key elements of continuity. Today, as the fascists have risen to power in our own country, a film like Rome, Open City, reminds us that it is the indomitable spirit of the people and their collective militant resistance that will overthrow the fascists and bring about the revolutionary transformation of society.

Entry is free. The film will be screened in Italian with English subtitles, and will be followed by a discussion.

They gossip amongst themselves about who could have taken the money and speculate that Mrs Haraguchi could have used the money to buy herself a new washing machine. Later Mrs Haraguchi confronts Mrs Hayashi for starting the rumor and ruining her reputation, but Mrs Hayashi states that she has indeed handed the dues money to Haraguchi's mother. Only later does Mrs Haraguchi realize it was her mistake (her mother being quite senile and forgetful), and she goes to apologize.

SHUDRKA HYDERABAD
Shudrka Hyderabad presents the monologue “I DON’T MOVE, I DON’T SCREAM” inspired by Lo Stupro (The Rape, 1983), adapted and translated in English by Swapan Mondal. This is an autobiographical performance and refers to its historical links with women's strife for justice. It is a reworked theatrical text on the use of sexual violence in the recent wave of violence in different parts of India.

About the film: The film takes place in suburban Tokyo, and begins with a group of boy students going home.

The film steers into a subplot concerning the local women's club monthly dues. Everyone in the neighborhood club believes that Mrs Hayashi, the treasurer, has given the dues to the chairwoman, Mrs Haraguchi, but Mrs Haraguchi denies it.
