In Solidarity with Prof Sujatha
Sat Jan 6, 4:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
In the recent past, Prof Surepally Sujatha, a well known social activist is being attacked, harassed, threatened, maligned and targetted for standing and speaking for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized groups. The vitriol and trolls against her by the right wingers crossed all levels of civility.

We are deeply disturbed by the concerted campaign against Dr.Sujatha Surepally, by the ABVP and other organizations of the BJP. We condemn the casteist and misogynistic language in which she is being abused in the social media by these groups. We think that she is being singled out for her principled stand on issues ranging from illegal displacement of people by the governments to burning of Manusmriti. We strongly believe that false complaints and vicious social media campaigns are not the modes of resolving differences of opinion on political issues. In a democracy, such differences should be resolved through discussions.

Allam Ramnarayana,Chairperson, Press Council of Telangana
Prof Ratnam, University of Hyderabad and many others will speak

Activists across the country are holding meetings to bring the issue to the fore.

Lamakaan invites one and all to this Solidarity Meeting with Prof Surepally Sujatha.

Reading from Two Novels byTrepan
Sat Jan 13, 5:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Lamakaan presents Activist in Residence TREPAN SINGH CHAUHAN

Title: READING FROM YAMUNA and HEY BYARI

In 2005 TSC set out to write a trilogy that examines the experiences of ordinary people struggling for statehood. Written from the perspective of Yamuna, a young woman who decides to join the struggle, Yamuna and He Byari bring to life the impossibility of struggle and yet the limitless joys that sustain it. TSC will read excerpts from both novels, speak of the difficulties of writing struggle as fiction and briefly of the last of the trilogy -- Bithabgarasmaan -- that he is currently writing.

About TREPAN SINGH CHAUHAN

TSC is a militant political activist and renowned novelist-poet who has for over two decades now been at the center of grassroots people's movements and a visionary voice on the future of the mountains and it's people. Trepan' started his political life as a young 14-year-old militant with the Chipki movement and by the middle 1990s he and other youth had articulated a new movement - Chetna Andolan - that not only became the 'peoples rights' voice of the Statehood movement but has since its formation articulated a vision of Uttarakhand as an experiment in Social Justice.

Apart from countless popular essays and pamphlets, TSCs short stories, poems, and novels have established him as one of the most important emergent voices in Hindi literature. His five novels -- Sarjan Navyug ka, Yumuna, Bhaag ki phans, He Byari and Darwaze ke Peeche have won him much critical acclaim.

The Story of a Small State - Uttarakhand

The Chipko movement of the 1970s and 80s marks the explosion of mass political conciousness that is to transform into the popular movement for a separate "small" state and eventually the formation of Uttarakhand in 20**. His talk will offer lens through which we might reflect on the emergence and consequences of Telangana.

Screening of Battleship Potemkin
Fri Jan 26, 4:00 PM
HYDERABAD CINEPHILES
Remembering Sergei Eisenstein on his 120th birthday.
Screening of Movie “Battleship Potemkin (1925)”
This Sergei Eisenstein’s movie is an all time masterpiece. It is based on the mutiny of Russian sailors against their tyrannical superiors on the battleship Potemkin during the Revolution of 1905. Although this movie is an agitational and revolutionary movie, it is also recognised for its pictorial beauty and great elegance of form. The movie is symmetrically made in five acts. Eisenstein was pioneer in the theory of dialectical montage as he believed that the meaning in motion pictures is generated by the collision of opposing shots. The agitational appeal of Battleship Potemkin was such that it became nearly irresistible when it was released in 1926.
After the screening of the movie, there will be a discussion on it in which all the viewers are welcome to participate.

ADDABAAZI:Make In India EkDhokha
Tue Jan 30, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
As soon as Modi government came to power, it was focused to bring more and more foreign capital into the Indian market. Congress too always looked keen to open up various sectors one by one to bring foreign capital but BJP has taken it many steps forward in last three years. When BJP was in opposition, it opposed the same FDI’s in various sectors but now it is trying to bring more and more of it. What is the reason for this? What will be the impact of this foreign capital infusion into Indian market? BJP has relaxed the labour laws to a very large extent which means the rights of labourers are heavily curtailed. It has also given a lot of impetus for relaxation of rules and procedures for business approvals and has given a clean chit to the businessman for exploitation of various resources like farmland, water bodies, mines etc. BJP is showing a glorious future to everyone by advertising its program of “Make in India”. But with all these major changes, will Make In India benefit the common man and the working class poor of this country? Will such policy enormously benefit the foreign corporates or will it change the lives of the working class people ? Is “make in India” a populist slogan with nothing substantial for the large section of the society?
Lamakaan programming council Is organizing a series of informal discussions and chit-chat under the name “ADDABAAZI”. The topic of Make in India – Ek Dhokha ! is chosen as the first in these series of discussions. So in order to understand the politics and economics around “ Make in India” and discuss it in an informal way, Moderator Mr. Aniket Aalm.
Lamakaan invites all of you on 30th Jan 2018 at 7:00 pm.

Lamakaan presents
Activist in Residence
TREPAN SINGH CHAUHAN

Title of the talk: From Chipko to Fascism:
The Story of a Small State - Uttarakhand

The Chipko movement of the 1970s and 80s marks the explosion of mass political conciousness that is to transform into the popular movement for a separate "small" state and eventually the formation of Uttarakhand in 20**. TSC will walk us through the two decades of struggle but even more importantly the rapid transformation of caste and class in Uttarakhand over the last decade and the emergence of a new elite. His talk will offer lens through which we might reflect on the emergence and consequences of Telangana.
