The Anupam Kunapuli Trio
Fri Nov 22, 8:30 PM
Anupam Kunapuli
Three struggling - in various degrees, beings were drifting by like autumn leaves until they were gently swept into the same corner where we happened to strike a conversation.
Lo and behold! We found concurrence to weave our distinct sound through subtle yet bumpy rhythms and melodies
A little bit about us:
- Shree Anupam Kunapuli, is the noble captain of our grand yet humble musical voyage (not so humble are the crew members!). He is an experienced jazz pianist with roots in Carnatic music.
- Master Nehal Raj Pradhan, is as wayward as the northern winds gushing through the pine trees. A hint of it comes forth in his musical influences especially when he hides behind the drums.
- Sire Aritro S. Ghosh, is an angry young man whose guitar portrays the colour of his conflicts. His guitar playing ranges from subtle seaside melodies to explosively picked licks. His musical arrangements speaks much about him.
We don’t have much to offer but our music.

Mohan Josh Haazir Ho
Tue Nov 26, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan & Hyderabad Cinephiles
Screening of Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho

An old couple, Mohan Joshi and his wife decides to sue their landlord, Kundan Kapadia for not maintaining their ‘collapsing’ chawl. For this, they hire two lawyers. The landlord is least bothered as he wants to drive the tenants out and tear down the chawl. The court case drags on for years and the lawyers in cahoots with the opposition lawyer milk the old couple dry, while they become rich. In the end when the judge comes to check the condition of the chawl, Kapadia’s men prop up the place thus convincing the judge that all is well with the chawl. Finally, Joshi gathers all his strength and pulls down the temporary supports put up by the men causing the building to collapse on himself…

Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! is one of the best satires ever made on the Indian screen and one of Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s best work. The film is a brilliant take off on the housing problems faced by lower middle-class chawl living tenants in Bombay, while at the same time making a dig at the archaic Indian judicial system where cases drag on and on and on and on…

The film beautifully highlights the ineffectuality of the ordinary man faced with an abuse of his very basic rights

All are invited for the screening of the movie "Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho"

Entry Free !!

Screening will be followed by a discussion on the movie

Movie Analysis by Dr. Mrinalini
Sat Nov 30, 4:00 PM
Dr Mrinalini Basaboini
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

'Understanding Golconda'
Tue Dec 3, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan An Open Cultural Space
Event:

The historic Golconda fort is one of Hyderabad's most well-known tourist spots, often drawing people from across the country to see it. However, the medieval-era monument has also been the most lacerated in terms of preservation, as constant encroachments have today damaged the fort in many ways.

Most people, especially from Hyderabad, are even not aware that the Golconda fort, which is 500 years old (2018 marked 500 years since the Qutb Shahi dynasty was founded by Sultan Quli Qutb Shahm who established his kingdom in the fort) has eight gates and an extension called the Naya Qila, which houses a Baobab tree that is about 400 years old.

In view of its importance to the city's heritage and to also understand the actual contours of the fort, come join us for a talk by Mr. Milan Kumar Chauley, Superintending Archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), at Lamakaan on 3 December, on the fort and its history. The talk will be followed by a session of Q&A.

About the speaker:
Mr. Milan Kumar Chauley first joined service as a Documentation Officer with Delhi government's archaeology department in 2002. He joined the ASI in 2003, working for its excavation branch in Bhubaneshwar and Delhi. In 2012, Mr. Chauley became a Superintending Archaeologist directly after writing the UPSC exam, following which he was appointed to the Telangana circle as the same in 2017.

Change the narrative around Rape
Sat Dec 14, 2:00 PM
Swathi
What do we usually talk when we talk about rape? More security. More surveillance. IFs and Buts on where the girl should be, shouldn't be, where she is and with whom, what she's wearing, more laws and rules to bring instant justice and so on.

We want to bring the focus to a different narrative, that lies beneath these outcomes and tries to explore deep rooted attitudes and systems that perpetuate violence against women.

With this approach, we believe that preventing rape is the best form of justice to victims of rape.
