Celebrating Jafar Panahi Films
Wed Jul 13, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Jafar Panâhi (Persian: جعفر پناهی, born 11 July 1960) is an Iranian film director, from east Azerbaijan province, screenwriter, and film editor, commonly associated with the Iranian New Wave film movement. After several years of making short films and working as an assistant director for fellow Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, Panahi achieved international recognition with his feature film debut, The White Balloon (1995). The film won the Caméra d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, the first major award an Iranian film won at Cannes.

Panahi was quickly recognized as one of Iran's most influential filmmakers. His films were often banned in Iran, but he continued to receive international acclaim from film theorists and critics and won numerous awards, including the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival for The Mirror (1997), the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for The Circle (2000), and the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for Offside (2006). His films are known for their humanistic perspective on life in Iran, often focusing on the hardships of children, the impoverished, and women. Hamid Dabashi has written, "Panahi does not do as he is told—in fact he has made a successful career in not doing as he is told."

After several years of conflict with the Iranian government over the content of his films (including several short-term arrests), Panahi was arrested in March 2010 along with his wife, daughter, and 15 friends, and later charged with propaganda against the Iranian government. Despite support from filmmakers, film organizations, and human rights organizations around the world, in December 2010 Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison and a 20-year ban on directing any movies, writing screenplays, giving interviews with Iranian or foreign media, or leaving the country except for medical treatment or making the Hajj pilgrimage.[4] While awaiting the result of an appeal he made This Is Not a Film (2011), a documentary feature in the form of a video diary. It was smuggled out of Iran on a flash drive hidden inside a cake and shown at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. In February 2013 the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival showed Closed Curtain (Pardé) by Panahi and Kambuzia Partovi in competition; Panahi won the Silver Bear for Best Script. Panahi's subsequent film Taxi also premiered in competition at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2015 and won the Golden Bear, the prize awarded for the best film in the festival. In 2018 he won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay (tied) for 3 Faces; he was unable to leave Iran to attend the festival, so his daughter, Solmaz Panahi, read his statement and received the award on his behalf.

24 Weeks / 24 Wochen
Fri Jul 22, 7:00 PM
Goethe Zentrum Hyderabad & Lamakaan
Film: 24 Weeks / 24 Wochen (2016) | Directed by Anne Zohra Berrached | Language: German subtitled in English

About the film:
A deeply moving drama about an expectant mother faced with an almost impossible decision: whether or not to proceed with the birth of a disabled child. A brave and forcefully narrated film that lingers a long time.
(Long Text): As a cabaret artist, Astrid makes people laugh. Markus, her boyfriend, is also her manager. They work well together, are a well-established team, and have a nine-year-old daughter. They’re also expecting their second child. During the sixth month of pregnancy, a routine examination reveals to the couple that their expected child will be born with Down’s syndrome and a serious heart defect. From one day to the next, the young family’s routine is turned upside down. Certainty and optimism alternate on a daily basis with depression, panic, and helplessness. Despite all the uncertainty and doubt, Astrid and Markus decide to have the baby. The nearer the due date gets, however, the greater Astrid’s worries and misgivings. After countless discussions and disputes inside and outside the family circle, she is forced to make a decision that is as inevitable as it is permanently irreversible.
Anne Zohra Berrached’s impressive and stirring film tells of an expectant couple’s trauma. It illustrates, with coherent dialogue and intricately developed scenes, how the difficult decision process that they must both endure cannot be broken down into right and wrong or black and white. The film owes its almost documentary feel to the participation of genuine doctors and nurses. The ensuing high level of objectivity and authenticity enhances the characters’ conflict and allows the viewer to share this difficult situation with the couple. 24 WEEKS is Anne Zohra Berrached’s final film for the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy.

About the Director:
Anne Zohra Berrached was born in Erfurt to German-Algerian parents. After studying social pedagogy, she gained her first directing experience at various theaters in Berlin before she began studying directing at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy in 2009. In the same year, she made her first documentary The Break Clown (2009). A year later she made her short documentary film, Heilige & Hure (2010), with which she was invited to more than 80 film festivals worldwide. In 2013, Anne Zohra Berrached directed her first feature film Two Mothers. In a semi-documentary manner, he tells of the difficult undertaking of a lesbian couple to have a child through a sperm donation. The film premiered at the Berlinale, where it won the Perspektive Deutsches Kino award. Berrached's second feature film 24 Weeks was the only German entry in the 2016 Berlinale competition. The stirring drama about a pregnant woman who, faced with the diagnosis that she is expecting a severely disabled child, has to decide for or against a late abortion, caused an international sensation and received numerous awards, including the German Film Prize in silver.

Anne Zora Berrached also ventured into controversial territory with her third film: The World Will Be Another (international title Copilot ) based on the story of the 9/11 assassin Mohammed Atta tells of the relationship between a German-Turkish medical student and her Lebanese man who is gradually becoming Islamist radicalized.
Anne Zohra Berrached was a member of the jury for the Berlinale competition this year. She lives and works in Leipzig and Berlin.

Pagla ghoda
Sat Jul 30, 8:00 PM
Darpan theatre
Written by Badal Sarkar in the 1960s and adapted and directed by Ali Ahmed, Pagla Ghoda revolves around four men from different walks of life as they sit through the night at a crematorium, playing cards, drinking and sharing their own stories while an unknown girl burns on the pyre.

As they sit at the crematorium ground, discussing the mystery of the young woman’s death, secrets from their past gradually come to the forefront and their ramblings soon turn poignant as they reveal their individual stories of loss and pain.

Pagla Ghoda holds a mirror for us to reflect on and shows how patriarchy affects both genders in different ways. And how cumulatively, it damages society as well.

As the play unfolds, it portrays, ‘Pagla Ghoda’ or ‘Mad Horse’ as a metaphor for the rush of blood in our veins, of lost chances and vague morals, of individual cowardice and collective will to uphold the dichotomies and sustain the injustices meted towards women. Pagla Ghoda raises a few questions that will haunt you even after the play is over

Reelistic Movie Club

Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Celebrating Roman Polanski
Wed Aug 3, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
The Wednesdays screenings at Lamakaan in August celebrate Roman Polanski's films.

Raymond Roman Thierry Polánski 18 August 1933) is a Polish and French film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. During his career Polanski has received five Oscar nominations, winning the Best Director in 2003 for The Pianist. He has also received two Golden Globe Awards, two BAFTAs, a Palme d'Or of the 2002 Cannes Film Festival in France, as well as multiple Césars.

His Polish–Jewish parents moved the family from his birthplace in Paris back to Kraków in 1937. Two years later, the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany started World War II, and the family found themselves trapped in the Kraków Ghetto. After his mother and father were taken in raids, Polanski spent his formative years in foster homes, surviving the Holocaust by adopting a false identity and concealing his Jewish heritage. Polanski's first feature-length film, Knife in the Water (1962), was made in Poland and was nominated for the United States Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. After living in France for a few years, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he directed his first three feature-length films: Repulsion (1965), Cul-de-sac (1966), and The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967). In 1968, he moved to the United States and cemented his status in the film industry by directing the horror film Rosemary's Baby (1968).

Polanski's life turned in 1969 when his pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, and four friends were murdered by members of the Manson Family. He made Macbeth (1971) in England and Chinatown (1974) back in Hollywood. In 1977, Polanski was arrested and charged with drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl. As a result of a plea bargain, he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of unlawful sex with a minor. In 1978, upon learning that the judge planned to reject his plea deal and impose a prison term instead of probation, he fled to Paris. As a result, Polanski is a fugitive from the U.S. criminal justice system. In addition to his conviction, multiple other women have accused Polanski of sexually assaulting them as children. After fleeing to Europe, Polanski continued directing. His other critically acclaimed films include Tess (1979), The Ghost Writer (2010), Venus in Fur (2013), and An Officer and a Spy (2019).

Film Title: Rosemary's Baby | 1968 | 136 Minutes

Rosemary's Baby is a 1968 American psychological horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski, and starring Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Patsy Kelly, Angela Dorian, Clay Tanner, and, in his feature film debut, Charles Grodin. The film follows a young, pregnant wife in Manhattan who comes to suspect that her elderly neighbors are members of a Satanic cult, and are grooming her in order to use her baby for their rituals. It is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Ira Levin.

Though set in New York City, the majority of principal photography of Rosemary's Baby took place in Los Angeles throughout late 1967. It was released in June 1968 by Paramount Pictures, and was a box-office success, grossing over $30 million in the United States. The film received numerous accolades, including multiple Golden Globe Award nominations and two Academy Award nominations. Ruth Gordon won both the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as the Golden Globe in the same category.

Rosemary's Baby deals with themes related to paranoia, women's liberation, Christianity (Catholicism), and the occult. The film earned almost universal acclaim from film critics and won numerous nominations and awards. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Four different narrators (bandit, woman, the Samurai and a woodcutter) narrate the four different versions of the incident. During the discussion following the screening we will discuss about it as also various aspects of the craft of the movie.

Film Title: Macbeth| 1971 | 140 Minutes

Macbeth (or The Tragedy of Macbeth) is a 1971 historical drama film directed by Roman Polanski and co-written by Polanski and Kenneth Tynan. A film adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name, it tells the story of the Highland lord who becomes King of Scotland through treachery and murder. The film stars Jon Finch as the title character and Francesca Annis as Lady Macbeth, noted for their relative youth as actors. Themes of historic recurrence, greater pessimism and internal ugliness in physically beautiful characters are added to Shakespeare's story of moral decline, which is presented in a more realistic style.

Polanski opted to create an adaptation of Macbeth as a means of coping with the highly publicized Manson Family murder of his wife, Sharon Tate. Finding difficulty obtaining sponsorship from major studios, the production was funded by Playboy Enterprises. Filming was troubled by poor weather around the British Isles. Macbeth was screened out of competition at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival, and was a commercial failure in the United States. The film was controversial for its depictions of graphic violence and nudity, but has received generally positive reviews since its release, and was named Best Film by the National Board of Review.

Mapping the Chevella Banyans
Thu Aug 11, 6:00 PM
Nature Lovers of Hyderabad
An informal citizen's group, The Nature Lovers of Hyderabad, have been documenting and creating awareness about the stretch of over 900 banyan trees that line the road between Chevella and Manneguda on the Vikarabad road. These 100-year-old trees and the rich habitat they represent, are under threat of being axed to make way for a four-lane highway. As part of this exercise, the group has systematically geotagged and photographed this stretch of trees in their effort to save them.

Fri Jul 22, 7:00 PM

Directed and written by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, the film revolves around an incident of the death of a Samurai and the rape of his wife allegedly by a bandit in a jungle. Four different narrators (bandit, woman, the Samurai and a woodcutter) narrate the four different versions of the incident. The film does not explicitly bring out which version was closer to the reality and leaves it to audience to decide. During the discussion following the screening we will discuss about it as also various aspects of the craft of the movie.

Celebrating Roman Polanski
Wed Aug 10, 7:00 PM
