Celebrating Nadav Lapid Films
Wed Dec 21, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan
Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid made headlines in India for criticizing Vivek Agnihotri's film The Kashmir Files, calling it “vulgar” and “propaganda”. Lapid, a jury chief at the 53rd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), made the comments while addressing the closing ceremony of the festival in Goa.

In the last month of the year 2022, December, Lamakaan brings to you 3-4 the best films of Lapid.

About Nadav Lapid: Lapid born on 8 April 1975 is an Israeli screenwriter and film director. Film critics consider him to be among the most acclaimed filmmakers from Israel.

Lapid was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, to a family of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. He is the son of writer Haim Lapid and film editor Era Lapid, he studied philosophy at Tel Aviv University, moving to Paris after his military service in the Israel Defense Forces. He returned to Israel to pursue a degree at the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem.

Lapid is married to Naama Preis, an Israeli actress; they reside in Tel Aviv. Lapid’s background in Philosophy is reflected in the films he makes. He handles weighty themes in his own way: sometimes with subtlety and sometimes with jarring bluntness. With the rare ability to philosophize while entertaining at the same time, Lapid’s films have picked up some serious issues but always managed to weave in dark humor and absurdist situational comedy.

samajdhar log
Sat Dec 24, 8:00 PM
darpan theatre
Penned by Dr Surinder Sharma, Samajdaar Log is a story of three inmates of a mental asylum and their views on the country’s social, political and economic affairs. The three unnamed crazy men kept themselves occupied by discussing everything there was under the sun and role-playing as different characters from the outside world. Things, however, take an interesting turn when the authorities dump a fourth inmate in their cell. Admittedly, an educated man, the new inmate starts interacting with the three, as a self-proclaimed triple Master of Arts. Soon their topics of discussion start meandering around a number of burning issues, such as, the role of religion in Indian politics, poverty, oppression of the working class in the hands of those in power, and lack of employment among others. What happens when they organise a mock election to choose a leader, forms the crux of this socio-political satire.

He is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished filmmakers in animation history.

Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985. He directed numerous films with Ghibli, including Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), and Porco Rosso (1992). The films were met with critical and commercial success in Japan. Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke was the first animated film ever to win the Japan Academy Prize for Picture of the Year. It briefly became the highest-grossing film in Japan following its release in 1997; its distribution to the Western world significantly increased Ghibli's popularity and influence outside Japan. His 2001 film Spirited Away became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards. He is frequently ranked among the greatest films of the 2000s. Miyazaki's later films—Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Ponyo (2008), and The Wind Rises (2013)—also enjoyed critical and commercial success. Following the release of The Wind Rises, Miyazaki announced his retirement from feature films, though he returned in 2016 to work on the upcoming feature film How Do You Live? (2023).
