Disom – The Leadership School
Wed May 10, 5:00 PM
Disom and Lamakaan
Disom – The Leadership School is an experiment started by Disom Foundation (www.disomfoundation.org) to nurture future ethical servant leaders for public life. Inspired by the Matsushita Institute for Government and Management in Japan, Disom intends to address a critical need in India at this time: selfless leaders, committed to the community and ultimately answerable to their “inner voice”

Disom offers a 15-month full-time programme which is experiential in nature and where the fellows practice
- Listening to each other and to their own inner voices,
- Living with and embracing diversity, and also
- Deep democracy, in its truest sense

Currently, our second batch with 19 fellows is underway since the last seven months. Our fellows are a diverse group, from 9 different states of the country, from different socio- economic backgrounds, with different educational and professional backgrounds, professing different faiths and ideologies.

Our programme involves travelling to different parts of the country, meeting people, seeing things and understanding the pain of communities. All the time, working on one’s own self. So it is as much a journey within as it is without.

We are in Hyderabad from May 9 to May 31. We would like to
Interact with young people to discuss about how we can collectively reimagine this new type of leadership that is so required today. We invite dreamers, pioneers, disrupters, artists, mavericks for this interaction planned at Lamakaan on Wednesday, May 10 from 5-7 pm.

See you all there and look forward to an enriching conversation

Remembering Orson Welles
Wed May 10, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
The summer heat is unrelenting, let's reduce the scorching sun heat through the evening cool breeze by watching one of the most influential and dynamic directors of all time, Orson Welles's films. May is also the birthday month of the director.

About Orson Welles: George Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 – October 10, 1985) was an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter who is remembered for his innovative work in film, radio, and theatre. He is considered among the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time.

In 1937, he and John Houseman founded the Mercury Theatre, an independent repertory theatre company that presented a series of productions on Broadway through 1941, including Caesar (1937), a modern, politically charged adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

In 1938, his radio anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air gave Welles the platform to find international fame as the director and narrator of a radio adaptation of H. G. Wells's novel The War of the Worlds, which caused some listeners to believe that a Martian invasion was occurring. Although reports of panic were mostly false and overstated, they rocketed 23-year-old Welles to notoriety.

His first film was Citizen Kane (1941), which is consistently ranked as one of the greatest films ever made, and he co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in as the title character, Charles Foster Kane. Welles released twelve other features, the most acclaimed of which include The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), Touch of Evil (1958), The Trial (1962), Chimes at Midnight (1966) and F for Fake (1973). His distinctive directorial style featured layered and nonlinear narrative forms, dramatic lighting, unusual camera angles, sound techniques borrowed from radio, deep focus shots and long takes. David Thomson credits Welles with "the creation of a visual style that is simultaneously baroque and precise, overwhelmingly emotional, and unerringly founded in reality." He has been praised as "the ultimate auteur". Among Welles's notable roles in films by other directors are Rochester in Jane Eyre (1943), Harry Lime in The Third Man (1949) and Cardinal Wolsey in A Man for All Seasons (1966). Welles was a lifelong lover of Shakespeare, and Peter Bogdanovich writes that Chimes at Midnight, in which Welles plays John Falstaff, is "arguably his best film, and his own personal favorite"; Joseph McBride and Jonathan Rosenbaum have called it Welles's masterpiece, and Vincent Canby wrote, "it may be the greatest Shakespearean film ever made."

Film Title: THE TRAIL | 1962 | 118 minutes | English Language |

About the film: The Trial is a 1962 drama directed by Orson Welles, who also wrote the screenplay based on the 1925 posthumously published novel of the same name by Franz Kafka. Welles stated immediately after completing the film: "The Trial is the best film I have ever made".
Josef K wakes up in the morning and finds the police in his room. They inform him he is on trial without exposing the reasons behind it. To find out more and protest his innocence, the man starts to look behind the facade of the judicial system. His efforts, however, seem to lead nowhere.

The Imminent Demolition of Victoria Zenana Hospital Why should we care? What can we do?

Convener: Sajjad Shahid

There have been multiple news reports in recent weeks alerting us to the likely demolition of Victoria Zenana Hospital, located on the premises of the High Court of Telangana. The media coverage has helped create awareness about the hospital's historical and cultural significance, leading to public concern about its possible demolition.
The hospital was constructed during the reign of the 6th Nizam, H.H. Nawab Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Bahadur. It holds a special place in the history of the city and the memories of its residents. Sadly, neglecting or intentionally destroying heritage buildings like this threatens to erase these memories.
The media is the most powerful force that we have as a democracy to influence public opinion and hold authority to account. We have come together as concerned citizens to provide background information and perspective to the media on this issue and outline some possibilities for further action on the part of citizens.

Shankar Rao’s wife Rani informs him that her ring is missing, and that little issue leads to an unexpected series of events. Rani leaves the house to visit her relatives. Her absence in the house creates an opportunity for a bunch of misfits including the domestic worker Sattibabu, Shankar Rao’s boss Ganga Raju, random passers-by Ramabrahmam and his nephew Vasu, to utilise the freedom to suit their own purposes. This leads to hilarious interactions between these people who are absolute strangers to each other.

EK DURACHARI RAJA
Sun Jun 4, 8:00 PM
SHUDRKA HYDERABAD
EK DURACHARI RAJA (The Story of a Despot) is Shudrka's Hindi production inspired by Albert Camus’ “Caligula”. Here in this play the motif of death is compared to resistance against contemporary despotism, holding out love of the soil and collective voice that represent people’s hopes. In spite of restraining convention and law, the innately vicious autocratic tendency among rulers exists. This enabled modern figures like Amin and Milosevic to indulge in ‘Caligula-ism’ – their dangerous whims and murderous eccentricities, and it meant that the only remedy against those who terrorized, was assassination.

"THE GOOD DOCTOR"
The Good doctor is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov`s short stories by Neil Simon. The short stories are narrated by a writer struggling with Writer`s block and his own artistic temperament. Witness as he takes you through his stories, be it either the puzzling tale of a man who offers to drown himself for 3 rubles or a deranged old woman who storms a bank and drives the manager mad, or any of his other eccentric tales.

"GARDABHANDAM"
Written by eminent playwright, actor, director Shri.Tanikella Bharani, Gardabhandam ( Donkey’s egg) is a rib tickling political satire that talks about inherited political power. The play is mix of fictional mythology and contemporary social issues. Come grab your seats and enjoy the fun.

"PUTUKKU ZARA ZARA DUBUKKU MEY"

Directed by Rathna Shekar

ABBEY EMLEYDU
Shankar Rao’s wife Rani informs him that her ring is missing, and that little issue leads to an unexpected series of events. Rani leaves the house to visit her relatives. Her absence in the house creates an opportunity for a bunch of misfits including the domestic worker Sattibabu, Shankar Rao’s boss Ganga Raju, random passers-by Ramabrahmam and his nephew Vasu, to utilise the freedom to suit their own purposes. This leads to hilarious interactions between these people who are absolute strangers to each other.

Knowing Our Constitution
Sun Jun 4, 4:30 PM
Akarsh Sriramoju
As we know, Constitutional literacy is very low these days; our responsibility is to spread awareness about salient features of our Constitution and its significance in our Nation's building. Therefore, I have launched a program called "Citizen Sabha," where people of all age groups will participate in discussing the Preamble of the Constitution, Fundamental rights, Directive Principles of State Policy, Fundamental Duties, and other aspects. Through citizen sabha, we all meet and look back at 75 years of India's constitutional democracy and envision a progressive future for all.

Telugu and English will be utilized as communication languages in the Citizen Sabha. Citizen Sabha @ 4th June at 4:30 Pm
