Quli Qutb Shah (1566–1611) is widely acclaimed as the first Urdu divan-holder; founder of Hyderabad; his poetry was a refreshing blend Deccani, Persian, and local idioms. Mah Laqa Chanda (1768–1824) is one of Urdu’s earliest women poets; patron of arts; contemporary of Mir and Sauda. Ameer Minai (1829–1900) — was Lucknow-born, but spent his final years in Hyderabad; Dagh Dehlvi (1831–1905) — one of the most eminent Urdu poets ever, died in Hyderabad; last great classical poet known for idiomatic brilliance. Jaleel Manikpuri (1866–1946) — who succeeded Dagh as Hyderabad’s Malik-ul-Shu‘ara and Maharaja Kishan Parshad Shad (1864–1940) — Prime Minister of Hyderabad; major patron and poet. Then the ones who shaped the progressive movement and the modern era poets who shone bright. Thsi evening celebrates a great tradition of our city
