A Night of Knowing Nothing is set around the 2015 student strike at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where students launched a 139-day protest against the Modi government's appointment of actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan as the institute's chairman. The film moves from FTII to the larger landscape of protests that shaped Indian campuses between 2015 and 2020, including the movements that followed the institutional death of Rohith Vemula, the attacks on students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia, and the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Blending intimate stories of love, caste and friendship with real footage of demonstrations and police violence, the film becomes a record of a generation that refused to remain silent in the face of fascist repression.
