*Hyderabad’s Traffic Crisis: Let's move people, not just vehicles*
For over three decades, Hyderabad’s transport investments have been overwhelmingly directed towards facilitating the movement of private vehicles — through road widening, flyovers, grade separators and expansion of road capacity. This has happened despite successive government-commissioned transport studies recommending a very different approach: strengthening public transport, creating networks for walking and cycling, and managing the demand for private-vehicle travel. Many of these recommendations were either only partially implemented or bypassed altogether.
The consequences are now difficult to ignore. More roads have not delivered better mobility. Traffic congestion continues to consume enormous amounts of people's time, while public transport has struggled to keep pace with the city's growth and walking and cycling infrastructure remains inadequate. The question, therefore, is not simply what more infrastructure Hyderabad needs, but whether we need to reverse the bias in our transport investments — from moving more private vehicles to moving more people, using public transport, walking and cycling as the foundation of urban mobility.
This public session at LaMakaan will bring together transport professionals, urban planners, citizens and other stakeholders to examine this question and explore practical, low-cost measures that can begin correcting this imbalance NOW! Can we make better use of the roads and public transport systems we already have? Can employers and citizens play a greater role in reducing unnecessary private-vehicle travel? And can Hyderabad adopt a transport strategy that measures success not by the number of vehicles moved, but by how many people can travel efficiently, safely and affordably?
