Remembering Andrzej Wajda
Wed Mar 11, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
This March, Lamakaan will host a special series of screenings dedicated to the legendary Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda, every Wednesday evening. The timing beautifully coincides with spring and the festival of Holi, Ugadi, and other festivals, making the event not just a cinematic celebration but also a cultural one—an occasion where the vibrancy of colors, renewal, and artistic expression come together. Just as Holi marks the triumph of joy and the blossoming of new beginnings, Wajda’s films will offer audiences a chance to reflect on resilience, history, and the enduring power of storytelling.

About the Director: Born on March 6, 1926, in Suwałki, Poland, Andrzej Wajda became one of the most influential voices in world cinema, shaping the Polish Film School movement and leaving a legacy spanning over six decades. He passed away on October 9, 2016, in Warsaw at the age of 90, but his contribution to cinema remains timeless. Wajda’s films often grappled with Poland’s turbulent history, weaving together themes of war, identity, and social struggle. His masterpieces include Ashes and Diamonds (1958), Man of Marble (1977), Man of Iron (1981), The Promised Land (1975), and Katyn (2007). Recognized globally, he received the Palme d’Or, an Honorary Oscar, and numerous lifetime achievement awards, cementing his place as a filmmaker who gave voice to a nation’s collective memory while influencing generations of directors worldwide.

Film Title: THE WEDDING | 1972 | 106 Mins | Poland | Polish with English Subtitles.

About the film: Wesele (The Wedding) is a 1972 Polish film directed by Andrzej Wajda. It was adapted from the 1901 play by the same name by Stanisław Wyspiański.

The plot is set at the wedding of a member of Kraków intelligentsia (the Bridegroom, played by Daniel Olbrychski), and his peasant Bride (played by Ewa Ziętek). Their class-blurring union follows a fashionable trend among friends of the playwright from the modernist Young Poland movement. The play by Wyspiański was based on a real-life event: the wedding of Lucjan Rydel at St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków and his wedding reception in the village of Bronowice. It was also inspired in part by the modernist painting of Jacek Malczewski and Maksymilian Gierymski. Wajda also directed Wesele for the theatre.

Kirai illu
Thu Mar 19, 7:30 PM
Gowtham
Kirayi Illu takes place over one night inside a rented house during a wedding celebration. When a 60-year-old migrant worker dies suddenly, his family informs the house owner, expecting support. Instead, they are asked to remain silent until the wedding rituals are completed, so the death does not disturb the festivities or raise uncomfortable questions.

With no real choice, the family locks itself inside the house and waits. Outside, drums beat, guests dance, and the celebration grows louder. Inside, grief is contained, whispered, and controlled.

As the night passes, the family confronts a painful truth: respect and belonging were tied to the man who is now gone. By morning, when permission is finally given to perform the rituals, they make a quiet decision. They will take the body back to their village, choosing a peaceful farewell over another compromise.

Every 50 years, we unremember the narratives of women who came before us. The Listening Room is a collection of songs that remembers them. The articulations in these songs mirror those of contemporary feminists. They sing about the search for respite in their relationships, their position in society, lust and worship (to god & weather). These songs dating from 6th century BCE are placed in different locations and different times in India. Subaltern songs, unlike other mediums, have safeguarded feminist narratives.

The discussion session will focus on Sultana's Dream and Padmarag, one of the first science-fiction utopian stories and one of the first feminist utopias by celebrated pioneering feminist, educator, activist, and Bengali writer Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.

Sultana, a Muslim woman living in colonial India, falls asleep and wakes up in a transformed future world: a utopia in which men rather than women are relegated to the domestic sphere. Women, now free to explore the outside world at will and pursue an education, run a peaceful and just society, using scientific principles to harvest energy from the sun and live in harmony with nature. Sultana’s Dream was published in 1905 in the Indian Ladies Magazine, the first English language periodical edited by, and targeted at, Indian women. Like the periodical, the story broke new ground.

As a pioneering work of science fiction and feminist utopian literature at the turn of the century, Sultana’s Dream is strikingly advanced in its critique of patriarchy, war, industrialization, and the exploitation of the natural world, speaking to the concerns of our contemporary world as much as its own. At a time when British colonialism was using the treatment of women in India as justification for colonial intervention there, Hossain’s story, in imagining a world in which men rather than women are kept inside, positions her protest against Islamic patriarchy within a larger feminist vision that takes on Western as well as Islamic forms of gender hierarchy. Her novella Padmarag is similarly utopian in its depiction of a women-run school and welfare center, and is both feminist and anti-colonial in its outlook. In both these works, Hossain seizes the critique of gender roles in India away from Western commentators and turns it against British interference, while also enlarging the critique to take on the problem of gender more broadly.

The Secret Recipe is a 45-minute independent Telugu crime thriller that unfolds within the closed walls of a secluded house. Driven by silence, mood, and minimal dialogue, the film explores control, hunger, and moral collapse through a restrained yet unsettling narrative.

Relying on atmosphere rather than exposition, the story gradually exposes the violence beneath routine and ritual, allowing the audience to interpret what is shown—and what is withheld. The Secret Recipe is an intimate, slow-burning descent into psychological unease.

Swadesh Deepak’s
COURT MARTIAL
(Hindi Play)

Directed by Rathna Shekar

"Court Martial," a compelling and thought-provoking theatrical sensation penned by playwright Swadesh Deepak, delves deep into the realms of human psyche and societal dynamics. The narrative revolves around the harrowing ordeal of a Jawan named Ramchander, hailing from the marginalized sections of society, who finds himself subjected to relentless humiliation and harassment at the hands of two privileged class officers. Pushed to his breaking point, Ramchander responds with a fateful act, shooting his tormentors, resulting in the death of one and injury of another.

The ensuing courtroom drama of the Court Martial proceedings offers a stark and audacious exploration of several weighty themes, including the insidious grip of casteism, the influence of education, the persistence of feudal mindsets, and the pervasive undercurrents of patriarchal systems that govern not only our institutions but also the broader political and civil structures.

Film Screening: Wag the Dog
Tue Apr 7, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
Wag the Dog (1997) is a political satire from director Barry Levinson that follows an elaborate ruse fabricated in order to distract from a US presidential scandal. A 'spin doctor' (Robert de Niro) and a Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) get together to manipulate and construct public opinion using the rhetoric of warmongering, sentimentalism, and jingoism through the immense media machinery of the USA. Through biting satire and ridiculous developments, film follows the construction of this narrative and consequently exposes the dirtiness of bourgeois politics, the highly ideological functions of nationalism and war, the farce of "media neutrality", and the real face of the ruling classes. In the present-day scenario, as yet another imperialist war wreaks havoc in the world, as the ruling classes are drowning in scandal and crime, this film becomes all the more relevant.

Join us for a screening of "Wag the Dog" on 7th April, Tuesday, at 7pm, at Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. Entry is free.

The idea is to host a practitioner-led conversation about what it actually means to design with AI — beyond the hype. The discussion would explore questions such as when designers should trust AI outputs, when human judgment should override them, and how accountability works in AI-assisted products.

The format would be simple and discussion-oriented:

• 2 invited speakers from the local design/technology community

• short opening perspectives (10–15 minutes each)

• followed by an open discussion with the audience

The event would be free and open to all, but we would require online sign-up to keep the group to around 20–30 participants, allowing for a more meaningful conversation.
