Prisoners of Conscience

Anand Patwardhan’s documentary film ‘Prisoners of Conscience’ provides a vivid account of the State of Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi from June 1975 to March 1977. During the Emergency the media was muzzled, over 100,000 people were arrested without charge and imprisoned without trial. Now there is no declaration of emergency in India and yet we are witnessing that number of Prisoners of Conscience continue to grow in this undeclared emergency as well.
We invite one and all to attend this important screening and discussion to express solidarity with all the prisoners of conscience.

Remembering Stanley Kubrick
Wed Jul 17, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
July brings one of the finest directors of all time, Stanley Kubrick films to Wednesday screenings at Lamakaan.

About the Stanley Kubrick: Stanley Kubrick (/ˈkuːbrɪk/; July 26, 1928 – March 7, 1999) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and photographer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his films were nearly all adaptations of novels or short stories, spanning a number of genres and gaining recognition for their intense attention to detail, innovative cinematography, extensive set design, and dark humor.

Born and raised in New York City, Kubrick was an average school student but displayed a keen interest in literature, photography, and film from a young age; he began to teach himself all aspects of film producing and directing after graduating from high school. After working as a photographer for Look magazine in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he began making low-budget short films and made his first major Hollywood film, The Killing, for United Artists in 1956. This was followed by two collaborations with Kirk Douglas: the anti-war film Paths of Glory (1957) and the historical epic film Spartacus (1960).

In 1961, Kubrick left the United States due to concerns about crime in the country, as well as a growing dislike for how Hollywood operated and creative differences with Douglas and the film studios; he settled in England, which he would leave only a handful of times for the rest of his life.

Film Title: 2001: A SPACE ODESSEY | 1968 | 139 Mins | UK & USA | English Language with English Subtitles

About the film: 2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel" and other of his short stories. Clarke also published a novelisation of the film, in part written concurrently with the screenplay, after the film's release. The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain and follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.

The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and there are long sequences accompanied only by music.

German Film Screening: Into the Beat

Into the Beat is a beautiful film directed by Stefan Westerwellea, where teen ballerina Katya, played by Alexandra Pfeifer, discovers hip-hop by chance and is faced with an impossible choice: Does she follow her parents’ footsteps... or her newfound passion?

For Hamburg ballet student Katya, the hard training for a scholarship at the New York Ballet Academy is almost a matter of course, as she is the daughter of Victor Orlow, a celebrated ballet dancer who, after the death of his wife, is now looking after Katya and her younger brother Paul on her own. There are only three weeks left until the exam under the merciless regime of the dance teacher. One day, however, Katya discovers a factory hall on her way where people are dancing - albeit to completely different sounds and with impetuous acrobatic movements. She immerses herself in this young, wild hip-hop dance scene, feels free, is recognized and meets the dancer Marlon, played by Yalany Marschner. But the more she feels that this is her form of expression, the more she comes into a conflict of conscience with her beloved father, who can no longer dance since an accident on stage. The daughter, however, feels obliged to continue the ballet tradition in the family. Katya has to make a decision.

REELISTIC- Movie club
Sun Jul 28, 3:00 PM
Reelistic
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.
