Celebrating Ang Lee
Wed Oct 30, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
This October, let us celebrate the cinema of Ang Lee, one of the most creative directors of our time.

Ang Lee (born October 23, 1954) is a Taiwanese filmmaker. His films are known for their emotional charge and exploration of repressed, hidden emotions. During his career, he has received international critical and popular acclaim and numerous accolades, including three Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. 2003 he was ranked 27th in The Guardian's 40 best directors.[6]

Born in Pingtung County, Lee was educated in Taiwan and later in the United States. He rose to prominence directing films such as Pushing Hands (1991), The Wedding Banquet (1993), and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), which explored the relationships and conflicts between tradition and modernity, Eastern and Western; the three films are informally known as the "Father Knows Best" trilogy.[7] The films were critically successful both in Taiwan and internationally.

His breakthrough in Hollywood was the costume drama Sense and Sensibility (1995), his first entirely English-language film. Lee received the Academy Award for Best Director twice for the romantic drama Brokeback Mountain (2005) and the survival drama Life of Pi (2012). He directed films in a broad range of genres, including the drama The Ice Storm (1997), the martial arts drama Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), the superhero movie Hulk (2003), and the erotic espionage drama Lust, Caution (2007).

Film Title: LIFE OF PI | 2012 | 127 Mins | UK, USA & Taiwan | English, Tamil & Frech Languages with English Subtitles

About the film: Life of Pi is a 2012 adventure-drama film directed and produced by Ang Lee and written by David Magee. Based on Yann Martel's 2001 novel of the same name, it stars Suraj Sharma in his film debut, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Rafe Spall, Gérard Depardieu and Adil Hussain in lead roles. The storyline revolves around two shipwreck survivors on a lifeboat stranded in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. Celebrating Terrence Malick
Wed Nov 6, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
As the winter sets in Hyderabad, it's a perfect time to watch cinema in the evening as the sun sets quite early these days.

This month, Lamakaan presents the cinema of Terrence Malick, known for his philosophical theme films.

Terrence Frederick Malick (born November 30, 1943) is an American filmmaker. His films include Badlands (1973); Days of Heaven (1978); The Thin Red Line (1998), for which he received Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award nominations and won the Golden Bear at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival; The New World (2005); The Tree of Life (2011), which garnered him another Best Director Oscar nomination and the Palme d'Or at the 64th Cannes Film Festival; and A Hidden Life (2019).

Malick began his career as part of the New Hollywood generation of filmmakers with Badlands, about a murderous couple on the run in 1950s American Midwest, and Days of Heaven, which details a love triangle between two laborers and a wealthy farmer during the First World War, before a lengthy hiatus. His films have explored transcendence, nature, and conflicts between reason and instinct. Broad philosophical and spiritual overtones and the use of meditative voice-overs from individual characters typically mark them. Malick's style has polarized scholars and audiences; many praise his films for their lavish cinematography and aesthetics, but others fault them for lacking plot and character development. His work has nonetheless ranked highly in retrospective decade-end and all-time polls.

Film Title: BADLANDS | 1973 | 93 Mins | USA | English Language with English Subtitles

About the film: Badlands is a 1973 American neo-noir period crime drama film written, produced, and directed by Terrence Malick in his directorial debut. The film stars Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek and follows Holly Sargis (Spacek), a 15-year-old who goes on a killing spree with her partner, Kit Carruthers (Sheen). The film also stars Warren Oates and Ramon Bieri. While the story is fictional, it is loosely based on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, in 1958.

Kya Hua Is Shehar ko? - 40 years on!

Kya hua is shehar ko is a 95 minute long documentary film which centres around religious processions in Hyderabad city as the locus of a new political sensibility that was being engineered in Hyderabad during the 80s.
The film maker Deepa Dhanraj follows the procession and its aftermatth of violence and speaks with victims and eye-witnesses. 40 years on - some of the sensibilities that were marginal to mainstream life have now become the mainstream. In this screening, we hope younger citizens of Hyderabad who are grappling with their own concerns about how the city around them is changing will get an opportunity to watch a poignant documentary film and hear the maker of the film to understand how her own concerns have remained the same and also changed.

REELISTIC
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

One is a sixteen-year-old Indian boy named Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma) and the other is a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

India has a rich tradition of folk arts. The custodians of which are the many tribes that live in the interiors of various states. The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and are Dravidian's whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States. The word Gond comes from the Dravidian expression kond , meaning green mountain . In the Gond belief system, besides Bara Deo (Great God), every hill, river, lake, tree, and rock is inhabited by a spirit and therefore sacred. Gond paintings are fascinating, where the artists express their faiths and beliefs, world view, their visual expression and sense of identity, both as a collective, and as individuals.

Ravi Maun used to stop at his residence and listen to his poetries on the way to Ziauddin hostel from medical college. Ravi Maun’s work is available on his blog on www.ravimaun.com. Few of his couplets are posted here at the end to extinguish the curiosity to understand his work.

His work has nonetheless ranked highly in retrospective decade-end and all-time polls.
