Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

About the Stanley Kubrick: Stanley Kubrick (/ˈkuːbrɪk/; July 26, 1928 – March 7, 1999) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and photographer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his films were nearly all adaptations of novels or short stories, spanning a number of genres and gaining recognition for their intense attention to detail, innovative cinematography, extensive set design, and dark humor.

Born and raised in New York City, Kubrick was an average school student but displayed a keen interest in literature, photography, and film from a young age; he began to teach himself all aspects of film producing and directing after graduating from high school. After working as a photographer for Look magazine in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he began making low-budget short films and made his first major Hollywood film, The Killing, for United Artists in 1956. This was followed by two collaborations with Kirk Douglas: the anti-war film Paths of Glory (1957) and the historical epic film Spartacus (1960).

In 1961, Kubrick left the United States due to concerns about crime in the country, as well as a growing dislike for how Hollywood operated and creative differences with Douglas and the film studios; he settled in England, which he would leave only a handful of times for the rest of his life.

An effective resistance against fascism calls for a concrete understanding of this phenomenon. The current rise of fascism in different parts of the world including in India has many similarities with the fascist rise in Europe in the early 20th century. At the same time there are significant differences as well between the two fascist rise. In order to have a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of fascism including the aspects of continuity and change as well as the contemporary strategy of anti-fascist resistance, ‘In Defense of Reason’ has invited a special guest Abhinav Sinha, who is a Marxist theorist and editor of workers’ Newspaper Mazdoor Bigul. Abhinav will deliver his talk on Friday, 2 August, 2024 at Lamakaan. We appeal to all those who consider them to be part of anti-fascist resistance to join this important program.

Screening of the award-winning feature film, ‘Ek Jagah Apni’ by Ektara Collective, which offers a glimpse into the lives of the transgender community in the city of Bhopal. The film follows the two transwomens’ lives, as they search for a house to rent and shows the challenges they face in their daily lives.
The film has won the FFSI K. R Mohanan Certificate of Merit and an International Jury Special Mention for both the lead actors at the International Film Festival of Kerala (2022), Audience Choice Award at the SXSW Film & TV Festival (2023), HIVOS Free To Be Me Award at Roze Filmdagen, 26th Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival (2023) and the Special Jury Mention, Kashish Film Festival (2023).

This is a Hindi comedy play based on our traditional value of not wasting food.

The story revolves around a typical middle class, close knit family of four. Sharma ji, his wife Shrimati ji and his two younger Siblings. Sonu and Monu. The couple have devoted their lives to Sonu and Monu.

They love them as their own children. Shrimati ji loves cooking for her family and keeps trying to make new dishes out of leftover food. All the three Siblings, bring a lot of humour by planning how to get rid of those experimental dishes of Shrimati ji, without hurting her feelings.

German Film Screening: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit

When the Nazis rose to power in Germany in 1933, the Jewish Kemper family knew they had to leave Berlin quickly. The father, a theater critic who had openly criticized the Nazis, was in immediate danger. Young Anna Kemper, played by Riva Krymalowski, had to make a tough choice during their hurried escape: she was allowed to take only one cuddly toy with her. She decided to leave her favorite pink rabbit with their housekeeper, Heimpi, who stayed behind. Anna's journey led her from Berlin to Switzerland, then to Paris, and finally to London. This uncertain and unsettled life was full of challenges and hardships, forcing Anna to constantly adapt to new situations. Director Caroline Link's film, based on Judith Kerr's autobiographical children's book, skillfully tells this touching family story. It appeals to both children and adults, addressing the themes of persecution, flight, and exile under Nazism in an age-appropriate way.

Communal Harmony Film Festival - 28th February to 2nd March 2018 16 years ago on the morning of 27th February 2002 Godhra train burning accident occurred in which 59 people were killed. This event triggered massive violence and pogrom against Muslims in Gujarat, killing 2000 people. Many believe, ‘Godhara train tragedy’ was a conspiracy to attack minorities and consolidate the Hindu vote bank in the state. There were several commissions constituted to investigate Godhra and post Godhra carnage. The reports submitted by the commissions identified several criminals but nothing has been done to book them and bring justice to the victims of the communal riots. Post Godhara many sporadic to regular communal riots have taken place from Muzaffarnagar to Kasgunj etc and they keep happening in the name of cow slaughter, anti nationalism, religion, love jihad etc. This film festival tries to find the reasons why people of the same country are ready to slit the throats of each other in the name of religion, caste. India is a land of multi cultural diversity and plurality where communities have been living and managed to survive the test of time. Why is it that we are not being able to co-exist with harmony and peace in the recent times? Have we become pawns in the hands of political parties who can trigger riots anytime to gain undue advantage? What is the way out to deal these day to day increasing riots in the country? Can we understand the game of these vested interested and do not fall prey their cheap discourses which only promote hate and vengeance against communities? The aim of the festival is to protect the secular fabric of India and to sensitize masses on the issues of peace and harmony and to wither away the communal agenda of some political parties. ENTRY TO THE FESTIVAL IS FREE AND OPEN TO ALL!!! Post screening of the films discussion will follow! 28th Febraury (Wednesday) - 6pm Film: Ram Ke Naam (In the name of God) (1992) Directed by Anand Patwardhan. Duration: 75 min. Language: Hindi (English subtitles) Synopsis: The film explores the campaign waged by the Hindu-nationalist Vishva Hindu Parishad to build a Ram temple at the site of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, as well as the communal violence that it triggered. A couple of months after Ram ke Naam was released, VHP activists demolished the Babri Masjid in 1992, provoking further violence. The film earned Patwardhan a wide recognition, and received several national and international awards. 1st March (Thursday) - 4pm Film: Final Solution (2004) Directed by Rakesh Sharma. Duration: 210 min. Language: Gujrati, Hindi (English subtitles) Synopsis: Final Solution is a 2004 documentary film directed by Rakesh Sharma concerning the 2002 Gujarat pogrom in which both Hindu and Muslims are targeted in the state of Gujarat by political extremists. In order to rationalize their violence, Hindu extremists had made the claim that their actions were in fact a "spontaneous response" to the Godhra Train Burning incident on 27 February 2002. But as the film proceeds with victims continuing to come forward and share their experiences, a more unsettling possibility seems to emerge- that far from being a spontaneous expression of outrage, the anti-Muslim violence had been carefully coordinated and planned. An official estimate states that 254 Hindus and 790 Muslims were killed during the riots, with 223 more missing. The documentary consists mostly of interviews, with both Muslims and Hindus, of multiple generations, and both sexes, with different views regarding the causes, justifications and the actual events of the violence that occurred, as well as their prospects for the future. 1st March (Thursday) – 7.00pm Film: Kya Hua Iss Shehar Ko? (What Happened to This City?) (1986) Directed by Deepa Dhanraj. Duration: 95 min. Language: Dakhani, Telugu (English subtitles) Synopsis: A pioneering political work of contemporary relevance: Communal violence between Hindus and Muslims in 1984 forms the starting point for this film, whose complexity lends it immense political force. The film's historical perspective is provided by a thorough commentary, which gives the camera's particular presence the necessary depth and complexity. The mechanisms of political power struggles, the dynamics among those that hold power and the instrumentalisation of economic relations and urban poverty make for a striking analysis, uniquely anticipating the subsequent development of communalist conflicts and the politics of marginalization.

2nd March (Friday) – 4pm Film: Muzzafarnagar Baaqi Hai (2015) Directed by Nakul Singh Sawhney. Duration: 136 min. Language: Hindi (English subtitles) Synopsis: In September 2013, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts of Western Uttar Pradesh, India, witnessed one of India's worst ever pogrom since Indian Independence. More than 100 people were killed and close to 80,000 people were displaced. In the past, the two districts have seen relative harmony between Muslims and Hindus. What happened this time? 'Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai...' (Muzaffarnagar eventually...) straddles between various socio-political-economic dynamics in the areas that have been affected by the violence. This documentary speaks to a cross-section of people. While looking at the immediate violence and it's repercussions, it takes a journey around the many facets of the massacre- the question of a woman's 'honour', which becomes the biggest rallying point to instigate people, the way communal polarisation was orchestrated, the merging of caste identity politics within the larger political fold and the breakdown of the once powerful farmers' union - Bhartiya Kissan Union 2nd March (Friday) – 7.00pm Film: Who Killed Gandhi (2015) Directed by Anand Ramayya. Duration: 50 min. Language: English Synopsis: Who Killed Gandhi? is an investigation into assassin Nathuram Vinayak Godse, his mentor Vinakay Damodar Savarkar, and the murder of a man considered by many to be a saint and the father of modern India, Mahatma Gandhi. The story of the characters involved and muliple attempts on Gandhi's life reveal the complexities behind it, which have been cloaked in mystery and are only now coming to light. Gandhi's radical vision of a non-violent, multicultural society was in direct opposition to that of his opponents, inevitably leading to his violent death. What emerges is an epic battle of clashing ideologies set in a formative era that would define the world we live in today.

Language: Gujrati, Hindi (English subtitles) Synopsis: Final Solution is a 2004 documentary film directed by Rakesh Sharma concerning the 2002 Gujarat pogrom in which both Hindu and Muslims are targeted in the state of Gujarat by political extremists. In order to rationalize their violence, Hindu extremists had made the claim that their actions were in fact a "spontaneous response" to the Godhra Train Burning incident on 27 February 2002. But as the film proceeds with victims continuing to come forward and share their experiences, a more unsettling possibility seems to emerge- that far from being a spontaneous expression of outrage, the anti-Muslim violence had been carefully coordinated and planned. An official estimate states that 254 Hindus and 790 Muslims were killed during the riots, with 223 more missing. The documentary consists mostly of interviews, with both Muslims and Hindus, of multiple generations, and both sexes, with different views regarding the causes, justifications and the actual events of the violence that occurred, as well as their prospects for the future. 1st March (Thursday) – 7.00pm Film: Kya Hua Iss Shehar Ko? (What Happened to This City?) (1986) Directed by Deepa Dhanraj. Duration: 95 min. Language: Dakhani, Telugu (English subtitles) Synopsis: A pioneering political work of contemporary relevance: Communal violence between Hindus and Muslims in 1984 forms the starting point for this film, whose complexity lends it immense political force. The film's historical perspective is provided by a thorough commentary, which gives the camera's particular presence the necessary depth and complexity. The mechanisms of political power struggles, the dynamics among those that hold power and the instrumentalisation of economic relations and urban poverty make for a striking analysis, uniquely anticipating the subsequent development of communalist conflicts and the politics of marginalization.

2nd March (Friday) – 4pm Film: Muzzafarnagar Baaqi Hai (2015) Directed by Nakul Singh Sawhney. Duration: 136 min. Language: Hindi (English subtitles) Synopsis: In September 2013, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts of Western Uttar Pradesh, India, witnessed one of India's worst ever pogrom since Indian Independence. More than 100 people were killed and close to 80,000 people were displaced. In the past, the two districts have seen relative harmony between Muslims and Hindus. What happened this time? 'Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai...' (Muzaffarnagar eventually...) straddles between various socio-political-economic dynamics in the areas that have been affected by the violence. This documentary speaks to a cross-section of people. While looking at the immediate violence and it's repercussions, it takes a journey around the many facets of the massacre- the question of a woman's 'honour', which becomes the biggest rallying point to instigate people, the way communal polarisation was orchestrated, the merging of caste identity politics within the larger political fold and the breakdown of the once powerful farmers' union - Bhartiya Kissan Union 2nd March (Friday) – 7.00pm Film: Who Killed Gandhi (2015) Directed by Anand Ramayya. Duration: 50 min. Language: English Synopsis: Who Killed Gandhi? is an investigation into assassin Nathuram Vinayak Godse, his mentor Vinakay Damodar Savarkar, and the murder of a man considered by many to be a saint and the father of modern India, Mahatma Gandhi. The story of the characters involved and muliple attempts on Gandhi's life reveal the complexities behind it, which have been cloaked in mystery and are only now coming to light. Gandhi's radical vision of a non-violent, multicultural society was in direct opposition to that of his opponents, inevitably leading to his violent death. What emerges is an epic battle of clashing ideologies set in a formative era that would define the world we live in today.

Patachitra - called Patam Katha in South is an ancient folk art mentioned in the Puranas and other early literature.

Patachitra, an ancient folk art , is appreciated by art lovers all over the world for its effortless style of drawings, colours, lines and space usage.

The word Patta in Sanskrit means a strip of cloth. The artists are called Patuas. Patuas do not just paint, they also sing as they unfurl the painting scroll to show it to the audience. These songs in Bengali are known as Pater Gaan. The songs are of wide variety ranging from traditional mythological tales and tribal rituals to stories based on modern Indian history and contemporary issues like protecting forests and public health. Patuas generally use natural colours, which they procure from various trees, leaves, flowers and clays.

The stories this evening are told by a generation of storytellers Bahar, Siraj and Sirajadullah.

They will narrate stories of Ramayan, Krishnaleela, Chandimangal, Manasamangal with the help of crawings done by themselves.

The Drama School Mumbai conducts Open Day workshops in different cities from December to April every year. The purpose of Open Days is to create awareness about the school's Post Graduate Diploma in Acting and Theatre-making. The workshops are an opportunity to come and learn about the lives of our students from the people who know it best - our faculty and alumni.

Aadhaar has been in the news for contentious reasons and our speakers will be analyzing various issues including supreme court hearings, privacy and mass surveillance concerns, security issues and associated vulnerabilities and exclusion resulting from authentication problems.

The Quantum Indians is a compelling new film by Raja Choudhury that tells the story of 3 forgotten Indian scientists Satyendra Nath Bose, CV Raman and Meghnad Saha who revolutionized Physics and Indian Science in the early part of the 20th century by giving the world Bosons, the Raman Effect, the Saha Equation and India's first and only Nobel for Science. This will be followed by a short discussion on Indian Science.

When you see home-movie footage from, say, the 1940s, the images look old, but the people in them appear, more or less, to inhabit the same universe that we do. Farming Injustice - The impact of Israeli agro-tech in Telangana and Palestine.

Since the 90s Israeli corporations are involved in Telangana’s agriculture. Starting from the Kuppam project in the 90s to the so-called Centers of Excellence to be set up under the Indo-Israeli agricultural project and the recently announced trips for over 1000 agricultural state officials to Israel, ostensibly for training purposes, dozens of crores of public money fund Israeli projects in the state.

This dialogue with farmers from Palestine and Telangana wants to look at the impact of these state sponsored projects on farmers in the state and the Palestinian suffering from Israel’s agricultural policies, central to their dispossession and colonisation. It will relate experiences of struggle against Israel’s corporate takeover of agriculture in other regions of the world.

Women in Resistance in Telangana- Movie Screening and Sharing of Experiences

Bharat Ke Nirmata- Women in Resistance (By Shubham with Media Collective, Delhi) is a film that documents the sharing of challenges, concerns, hopes and dreams of women who were and are part of many people's movements across India.

Through stories, poetry, music and dance, the women narrate their lived experiences of what made them who they are and their struggle with family, society, state, religion and patriarchy.

The event shall begin with the screening of this film be followed by a panel discussion with seven women from different people's movements from Telangana. Every speaker shall speak on three major themes- personal journeys and struggles, their experiences in the immediate political struggle that they are leading or are a part of, and their vision for life and the world.

The film runs for 52 minutes after which the panel members shall speak for ten minutes each followed by an hour long open floor for audience questions and discussions.

Participants will be trained in the following areas.

1. Browsing Anonymously with Tor;
2. Using Encrypted communications platforms like Signal;
3. Using Email encryption;
4. Secure password management;

This workshop will follow a hands-on approach. Participants should bring their laptops and mobile devices.

In the times of Big Data and Internet of Things, digital security has become more significant than ever. Data-driven private giants are rapidly collecting and analyzing vast amounts of personal data belonging to individuals. Every electronic device and service today has the ability to monitor its users’ activities in excruciating detail, spawning an entire industry that treats data as money. As corporations come up with new and inventive ways to monetize personal data, civil liberties such as the right to privacy are often left by the wayside.

In addition, there have been instances where cyber-attacks have compromised highly sensitive personal information on a very large scale (such as the attack on Equifax that leaked social security numbers), proving that cyber-security is no longer a niche area. Increasing reliance on the Internet and smart devices is exposing people to more cyber-security threats, and the problem will only be compounded as technology permeates ever deeper into daily lives.

In this scenario, it is a cause for concern that most users remain unaware of the privacy and security risks that they face on a daily basis, or the nature and extent of damage that stands to be done in consequence.

This 'Digital Security Training’ Workshop is an effort towards raising awareness in this regard and help building digital security of attendees.

Makhdoom, the revolutionary poet, lived in Hyderabad. A progressive writer, a poet of great sensitivity, a revolutionary with deep sensitivity.
Makhdoom’s thoughts and poetics are explored through his poems and ghazals by Hyderabad’s famous ghazal singer, Adnan Salem. The set includes his political poems, love ballads, and ghazals.

Chekka Bommalata of Burugupeta Village, Telangana State
As part of 8th Anniversary Celebration, Lamakaan is organizing Traditional Wooden String Puppetry-Chekka Bommlata or Koyya Bommlata at Lamakaan.

Chekka Bommlata or Koyya Bommlata –String Puppetry is pride of Telangana State. At present two Mothe troupes-One from Ammapuram which is quite well known and second is Burugupeta (lesser known) perform it.

They belong to Beda Budiga Jangam Community. The uniqueness of this Budiga Jangam community is they are good singing, music rendition and in folk art forms. Buduga Jangam is an artistic community which has more than 24 sub communities along with Bommalalollu, Sarada Kala Rupamvalu, Kakipapala, Ganayeti, Mandhechchu, and so on.

However, Buduga is a percussion instrument associated with the narration of Jangam Kathas or Kathalu. This instrument is also known as Buduga, Budiga, Dikki,and Gummeta in Telugu. This Buduga Jangam community is the traditional narrators of stories from mythology, epics, and heroic tales of the region.

They also performed the obsequies rites to the saivites and in return were paid Beda or byada coin by them. So, they are also known as Beda Jangam or Beda Budiga Jangam. 8 Beda or Byada (this is how they pronounce it) is equal to Re-1/- and 16 Ek Anna equals to 8 Bydalu.

Basically, Budiga Jangaluvalu are wandering hunters and food gatherer. However, present generation is quite well educated and chosen alternative profession for livelihood.
Mothe Shankar who is the grandson of octogenarian Mothe Ramaswamy is a photographer and has his own studio. He is the troupe in charge of Burugupeta Bommalata. Along with him his brothers, cousins and his own son are receiving training from Mothe Yadagiri and Mothe Ramaswamy. They feel the pride of the art form resting with their family which is unique.

Aakruti Kathak Kendra, Hyderabad is delighted to perform at the 8th anniversary of Lamakaan.

Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word of Katha meaning story.
Kathak is a classical dance form originated in North India, it contains traces of Temple and ritual dances along with certain features of Persian dances.
Intricate footwork and spins, as well as abhinaya, the art of expression, are the highlights of Kathak.

The compositions are based on Traditional and Contemporary music.
The theme of Kathak dance recital is "RANG" where Blue symbolises Water, Green - The Earth, Yellow - sand and Red - Fire.

The dynamic nature of a soil is due to the tremendous activity of micro and macro organisms supported by availability of organic matter. It is this life in the soil that lends its name to the soil as living soil. A vast number of organisms engineer a myriad of biochemical changes as the decay of organic matter takes place in the soil. Among the organisms, which contribute to soil health, the most important are the earthworms. Based on continuous research on earthworms made me write “earthworms are the pulse of the soil, healthier the pulse, healthier the soil”.

The soil is a living dynamic system whose functions are mediated by diverse living organisms which in agriculture requires proper management and conservation. Unfortunately, in today’s chemical agriculture, importance is shown on soil fertility and not on the holistic soil health which provides an integrated sustainable mechanism to the soil to sustain its “living” fabric of nature.
Prof. Sultan Ismail will talk about the myriad of soil organisms, earthworms are one of the most vital components of the soil biota in terms of soil formation and maintenance of soil structure and fertility.

About Sultan Ahmed Ismail: Sultan Ahmed Ismail is an Indian soil biologist and ecologist. His work has centred on techniques for recycling biodegradable waste into fertilizer using local varieties of earthworms, and on soil bioremediation.

Ismail received a D.Sc. in Zoology from the University of Madras in 2001 for his research on the role of earthworms in soil ecology and waste management. He is also the Managing Director of the Ecoscience Research Foundation.

Secular and Traditional Hindustani Music and Poetry by Prof Subendu Ghosh

Prof. Subendu Ghosh takes us on a musical journey through India’s secular traditions of Amir Khusro, Kabir, Tansen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqeer, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Tagore, Faiz, Ramprasad Bismil and others. Composed and sung by Subendu, this is a performance of sheer breadth of traditions covered in an evening.

This is a presentation to remind ourselves as we pass through a difficult period of communal tensions and violence, about India’s secular commitment. The people of India have lived in peace and harmony over the ages. Despite differences in religions, they have all contributed to build a very rich and composite culture, and this is beautifully reflected in our literature and music.
This programme is a musical journey through India’s traditions of secular poetry, in a historical order beginning from the 13th century to the present day. Most of the music is composed and sung by Dr. Subhendu Ghosh and is based on Hindustani ragas or other musical forms including the traditional folk songs. The narrative includes a number of historical personalities like Hazrat Amir Khusro, Kabir, Mian Taan Sen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqir, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Ramprasad Bismil, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Rabindranath Tagore.
This is a small effort to highlight the poetic genius of our Indian poets and pay our tribute to those who dedicated their lives to a Secular India.

"Hawalalat" Written By Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena, Directed by Subhash GuptaHawalaat’, revolves around the story of three youth who have no place since nobody was ready to offer them the shelter and they thought it proper to have the same in a police lock-up. For this they approached a police cop as criminals. In the beginning the cop is not ready to believe in them and asks them to establish their credentials by demonstrating their expertise and past accomplishments in the word of crime. To avoid them, the cop agrees to take them to the lock-up (Hawalaat) after tying their eyes. On the way they talk about political, ideological and social aspects of life and try to explain to the policemen how, like them he is also a mere pawn in the larger system, but he is not convinced. Instead of taking them the police station, the cop keeps them moving at one cross satire on the exploitation of the youth by the people sitting at the helm of affairs. The cop symbolizes the politicians of this country who have been be fooling the youth since Independence. In a highly intellectual manner the playwright has tried to expose the exploitation of the most energetic age group of the country.

"Marnoprant" written by Surendera Verma, directed by Jay Jha revolves around a triangular love story. The playwright unfolds the whole episode after the death of a young lady whose husband and the lover meet for the first time. Their encounter reveals the minute intricacies of man-woman relations and frustrations of extra marital affairs. Both embarrass each other by revealing the intimate moments they shared with the young lady. The dramatic action becomes even more interesting when it is shown that the husband comes to know about the relation after the death of his wife.

"Banerjee Babu", Written by Avinash Matta, Directed by Jay Jha - Nobody loves him, nobody cares for him. They only remember him when they need him to do some work. He is lonely. All he needs is a hug. Will you give it to him?

Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). With the fascists forces gaining political power and spreading like a virus in the country, it becomes all the more necessary to recollect the sacrifice and message of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

Bhagat Singh was born in Punjab, India (now Pakistan), on September 27, 1907, to a Sikh family deeply involved in political activities. He quit school at thirteen to devote his life to Indian independence. He became involved in several violent demonstrations of political defiance and was arrested several times. Singh was found guilty of killing a British police officer and hanged on March 23, 1931.

Almost 26,500 students committed suicide in the country between 2014 and 2016 as per the official statistics that are recently disclosed by a Rajya Sabha member. Prof Laxminarayana will be speaking at length about the issues pertaining to corporatization and commodification of education. Parents of suicided students will attend the event and share their views.

In times of fascism, caste question has emerged on the national agenda with a renewed emphasis as evident in the wake of some recent incidents such as the institutional murder of Rohith Vemula, Una episode and Bhima Koregaon violence. However, the nature of caste system in modern capitalist era is not the same as the one that prevailed in feudal medieval India or in pre-feudal ancient India. As against the widespread belief, caste system has not remained static throughout history. There have been both temporal and spatial variations. The caste structure in south India is not exactly same as that in north India. The relation between caste and class has also evolved over a period of time. These complexities need to be grasped in order to move towards annihilation of caste. Without having a concrete understanding of the origin, evolution and spatio-temporal variations of caste, no project of annihilation of caste can be devised. Also, it is important to have a critical look at the efforts made in the past towards the annihilation of caste including the anti-caste movements of Ayyankali, Phule, Periyar, Ambedkar and the communist movement. It is because of this reason that Lamakaan is conducting an extensive 3-day long talk series on “Caste: origin, evolution and proposed program for its annihilation”. The talk will be delivered by Abhinav Sinha who is a Marxist theorist and activist. Abhinav has carried out extensive research and study on caste system. The sessions would be organized as follows:

Day 1. Origin and evolution of caste

Day 2. Critical appraisal of the anti-caste movements of Ayyankali, Phule, Periyar, Ambedkar

Day 3. Marxism and caste question
