Tue Feb 17, 6:30 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
Costa Gavras’ 1982 movie Missing revolves around the mysterious disappearance of an American journalist Charles Horman in the aftermath of US-sponsored military coup in Chile in 1973 that deposed the democratically elected socialist president Salvador Allende. The movie traces the concerted search of Charles by his father Edmund and his wife Beth who have opposing worldviews. Apart from their collective effort to find Charles, the movie also examines their contrasting views about the US. It also shows how in the process of finding his missing son Edmund’s views about his own country changes. The impact of this movie can be gauged from the fact that it was banned in Chile during the regime of Augusto Pinochet who became the country’s military dictator after the 1973 coup.
