Synopsis:
Kafkas Der Bau is a haunting adaptation of Franz Kafka’s unfinished story “Der Bau,” brought to the screen for the first time in its original language. Set in a sprawling, fortress-like apartment complex, the film follows Franz (Axel Prahl), a man who has seemingly secured everything he ever wanted, yet feels increasingly hunted by invisible forces outside his door. Surveillance cameras, locked gates, and elaborate defences cannot silence the echo of paranoia that grows within his mind.
As Franz isolates himself further, his relationships, career, and very sense of reality begin to unravel. The world outside, real or imagined, presses closer, and the burrow he built for safety becomes his suffocating cage.
Directed by Academy Award winner Jochen Alexander Freydank (Toyland), this chilling psychological drama explores themes of fear, surveillance, and the cost of self-imposed isolation in an age of constant watchfulness. Dark, claustrophobic and unsettlingly timely, Kafkas Der Bau is both a faithful tribute to Kafka’s genius and a mirror to our own anxious, barricaded lives.
