Bitter Chocolate is a book written by journalist and author Pinki Virani, published in 2000.

We have adapted several case studies from the book and constructed a narrative-based
show with subtle performances.
Bitter Chocolate provides an unapologetic and honest look at the rampant problem of child
sexual abuse in our country. Both the book and the author Pinki Virani have won the National
Award. This book is the first of its kind in the Indian sub-continent not only on the subject of child
sexual abuse, but also including previously unrevealed case studies and long term side effects.
It has broken Indian publishing records in non-fiction by recently celebrating its silver jubilee
edition. Pinki Virani has also been lauded internationally for being the first person, and woman,
in the Indian sub-continent to stand up publicly and bravely talk about the sexual abuse in her
childhood which included incest and rape. She has worked with three central governments
and bureaucrats to ensure a set of strict laws against child sexual abuse. The law Protection of
Children from Sexual Offenses Act passed in 2012, includes four of her suggestions.

This talk by Vipul Rikhi touches on aspects of insecurity and identity crisis which may lie at the root of streaks of assertion and aggression by which the 'nation' is sought to be defined. Drawing upon local wisdom traditions and figures such as Kabir and Tagore, the talk aims to offer a broader understanding of self as well as country, and how the two may be related.

Democracy behind bars - A case study of Prof GN Saibaba
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recent heart wrenching letter written by Professor GN Saibaba to his partner Vasantha haven't received any mainstream media's attention. The 'callous' attitude of the state and civil society on this issue not only questions the democratic values but also humanity in general. Constitution guarantees that every citizen has right to have political beliefs of their nature. Convicting a 90% disabled person based on the political beliefs that he possesses is extremely undemocratic and unconstitutional.

Professor GN Saibaba, along with 5 others were convinced for allegedly having links with and possessing Maoist literature. Recent letter written by him underlines the denial of basic facilities in the Nagpur jail for his survival. This also questions the inhumane correctional and rehabilitation facilities and direness of prisoner's rights.

Therefore it becomes important to discuss these incidents in the light of how modern democratic states suppress the people for just possessing dissenting political beliefs .

Azad mann in collaboration with Lamaakan is inviting you to the panel discussion on "Democracy behind bars___ A case study of Prof GN Saibaba". Panelists include Committee for the Defence and Release of GN Saibaba chairman Professor Haragopal, Professor Padmaja Shaw, CRPP general Secretary Balla Ravindranath. We look forward to have an intensive discussion.

Organized by

Adapted from Arnold Bennett's "Question of sex", it is an act which displays buffoonery at its best. Absurd yet hilarious to see how this family plays with words and emotions and finally come to a conclusion. Or wait, maybe not!

Palestine Solidarity!
Wed Dec 13, 3:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
'Donald Trump's latest announcement to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is a provocative and belligerent move, paving way for further displacement of Palestinians, demolition of homes, expansion of illegal settlements and ethnic cleansing of Jerusalem. Around the world this move has been denounced. There are protests on going in occupied territories where thousands are injured but continuing to resist. People everywhere are showing solidarity in different ways.

What is the way forward in our solidarity to the Palestinian struggle for freedom? More than 170 Palestinian popular movements, trade unions, women's groups, political parties- the largest Palestinian civil society coalition- gave the call in 2005 for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Since then this Palestinian-led movement has been growing from strength to strength.

Israel has a huge range of interests and investments in India from defence to water management to agriculture. These help Israel put forth its PR machinery to whitewash its violations and sustain its settler colonialism, apartheid and occupation. With this latest aggression with respect to Jerusalem, it is time we redouble our efforts and build the BDS movement in India. Israel's trade relations with India and its accompanying propaganda must be dismantled. We must make Israel pay for its violations and oppression. This could be the beginning of sustained and concrete solidarity to the Palestinian struggle for justice and freedom.'

Invisible Cities
Thu Dec 14, 3:00 PM
Lamakaan

In the run up to the DO DIN 2017, we are organizing a panel discussion titled Invisible Cities. We bring to you stories from many different kinds of cities that are held within the national capital of Delhi. Dr. Sushmita Pati, political scientist who spent years tracing the transformations of urban villages in Delhi and Dr. Diya Mehra who traced the transformations of neighborhoods through resident welfare associations. Both begin their investigations from the decade of the 50s when Delhi began to undergo dramatic changes as refugees from Pakistan began to settle down into distinct localities and farmers in dozens of villages within Delhi gave up their farmlands to Delhi Development Authority. In a little over half a century since then, regulatory and planning authorities made occasional attempts to come to terms with the spatial transformations of Delhi. Yet, the capillary processes of change through which money, power and people, and the macro and micro infrastructures and channels through which material resources of life - water, electricity and other services kept morphing in ways that have largely remained invisible to researchers and policymakers. In this panel discussion, Dr. Pati and Dr. Mehra will share stories of places to demonstrate how real and breathing cities actually work. The panel will also reflect on the methodological challenges and ethical questions that arise in the course of uncovering lifeworlds that have hitherto remained hidden. We hope to use this as a launching point to reflect on a singular question: what is at stake in making the visible the invisible. Why must we, if at all, pry open stories that have been hitherto private possibly for good reason.

Daasi - B Narsing Rao Films
Sat Dec 16, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan
Lamakaan hosts a week-long (15th to 21st Dec 2017) film Festival of B.Narasing Rao's classical films. Narsing Rao is one of the pioneers of Art Film Movement in Indian cinema in general and Telugu cinema in particular. His movies have created a special sensation with their sensible thoughts and story. He had made sincere efforts to take Telugu Cinema to the world.

DAASI
(Bonded Women) (1988)
The film that won Rao critical respect is Daasi(Bonded Woman 1988). Set in 20's, it chronicles the unenviable life of a housemaid, who was in custom then, came as a part of dowry to a richZamindar's house. She goes through the back breaking routine of household chores as well as being expected to entertain zamindar and his male guests. When she gets pregnant, she is forced to abort. Narsing Rao, with the help of his cameraman AK Bir, recreates the graceful lifestyle of the privileged in limpid, sensuous images, as when the wife of the zamindaris bathed and coiffeured by her maids, and contrasts it effectively with his bleak suffocating world of the housemaid, whose world is not her own. This film won five National Awards, including the one for Best Actress, won by Archana who played her role with consummate skill.
'Dasi' bagged the Diploma of Merit award at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1989. Due to its meticulous technicality and superior artistic sense, 'Dasi' was considered a milestone not only in Telugu but also in Indian cinema.

Citizen Cafe: Make Hyderabad great again!

Venue: Lamakaan, Banjara Hills Time: 12:30PM on the 17th of December

Citizen Cafe:We’re convening enthusiastic (and not so enthusiastic) contributors to Hyderabad’s local landscape to talk through Hyderabad’s most pressing issues.

Over the course of 90 minutes we’re looking to structure (and find you a place to vent) about Hyderabad’s most pressing issues- while also laying down the first steps to solve them.

Join us to talk about -

What would it take to get my friendly neighborhood corporator to lay a road that won’t get damaged?
Wait, who is my corporator again?
Why does every monsoon in Hyderabad feel like you are on the sinking Titanic?
Will Ivanka Trump ever come back to visit all parts of Hyderabad to incentivize swift fixing?
Now that the Hussain Sagar is foaming, what can we do to prevent Bangalore-levels of jhaag?
And what are the odds that our air will turn into the benevolent and healthy air (not!) of Delhi?

Insights from this will feed into a plan for us, the citizens of Hyderabad, to take more ownership and act now to make our city livable for everyone.

Where Classical meets Folk...
Sat Nov 18, 7:30 PM
Barnali Bhattacharya
Hindustani classical music is a heritage that has evolved through the centuries. It is a blend of ritualistic, folk and cultural expression of the sub-continent and represents music of different genres. The two singers, namely, Barnali and Anindita, will explore the integration of native and folk traditions with Hindustani classical music. This type of collaborative performance, stepping outside of the traditional bounds of Indian classical music, will be an experimental endeavour.

From Desh-Prem to Rashtra-vaad: Rise of the Assertive and Insecure Indian

Talk by Vipul Rikhi
followed by songs of Kabir

How do we understand or relate to the current climate of aggressive 'nationalism', and are there different models for expressing and sharing a love of the country? This talk by Vipul Rikhi touches on aspects of insecurity and identity crisis which may lie at the root of streaks of assertion and aggression by which the 'nation' is sought to be defined. Drawing upon local wisdom traditions and figures such as Kabir and Tagore, the talk aims to offer a broader understanding of self as well as country, and how the two may be related.

The talk will be followed by some songs of Kabir, performed by Vipul Rikhi.
