Terrence Frederick Malick (born November 30, 1943) is an American filmmaker. His films include Badlands (1973); Days of Heaven (1978); The Thin Red Line (1998), for which he received Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award nominations and won the Golden Bear at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival; The New World (2005); The Tree of Life (2011), which garnered him another Best Director Oscar nomination and the Palme d'Or at the 64th Cannes Film Festival; and A Hidden Life (2019).

Malick began his career as part of the New Hollywood generation of filmmakers with Badlands, about a murderous couple on the run in 1950s American Midwest, and Days of Heaven, which details a love triangle between two laborers and a wealthy farmer during the First World War, before a lengthy hiatus. His films have explored transcendence, nature, and conflicts between reason and instinct. Broad philosophical and spiritual overtones and the use of meditative voice-overs from individual characters typically mark them. Malick's style has polarized scholars and audiences; many praise his films for their lavish cinematography and aesthetics, but others fault them for lacking plot and character development. J. Devika is a noted Malayali historian, trenchant feminist, social critic, and academic from Kerala. She currently researches and teaches at the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram as a professor. She comments widely on Indian politics and culture and has closely interacted with the Hema Committee proceedings.

She will speak about the Malayali film world and the Hema committee and interact with students and activists.

Kya Hua Is Shehar ko? - 40 years on!

Kya hua is shehar ko is a 95 minute long documentary film which centres around religious processions in Hyderabad city as the locus of a new political sensibility that was being engineered in Hyderabad during the 80s.
The film maker Deepa Dhanraj follows the procession and its aftermatth of violence and speaks with victims and eye-witnesses. 40 years on - some of the sensibilities that were marginal to mainstream life have now become the mainstream. In this screening, we hope younger citizens of Hyderabad who are grappling with their own concerns about how the city around them is changing will get an opportunity to watch a poignant documentary film and hear the maker of the film to understand how her own concerns have remained the same and also changed.

"Christspiracy - The Spirituality Secret" examines the intersections between various religions, veganism, and animal rights, aiming to explore how religious values might align with compassion towards animals. The film delves into biblical texts, theological perspectives, and historical narratives to question traditional Christian stances on animal use and advocate for a vegan lifestyle as a form of spiritual alignment.

A cyber safety awareness session focuses on educating participants, especially students, about safe online practices to protect themselves from potential cyber threats. The session covers essential topics like safeguarding personal information, recognizing phishing and scams, understanding privacy settings, and learning the importance of strong passwords. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, these sessions aim to empower participants with practical knowledge to navigate the digital world responsibly, ensuring their online safety and security.

Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Batik printing, is a traditional textile technique originating from Indonesia and now practised across the States of Gujarat, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, each in its own style. In this batik printing workshop, attendees shall learn about the history and cultural significance of batik while gaining hands-on experience in the craft.

The participants will be introduced to the materials, including fabric, wax, and dyes. They will then be taught how to use block printing tools to apply wax patterns onto fabric, creating a resist design. After waxing, participants will dye and wash their fabrics, allowing them to witness the transformation as the wax is removed to reveal vibrant, intricate patterns. The attendees can leave the workshop with their unique batik pieces, hopefully having developed a deeper appreciation for this beautiful art form and its cultural roots. Workshop Details:

‘TRANSCREATION’ is a rare art of poetic expression, where the poetry in one language is translated in another language with near precise meaning and rhyming, matching with the original form and language. Dr. Ravindra Kumar Choudhary, M.S.(Ortho.) is an orthopedic surgeon by profession based at Bangalore. A poet of Hindi, Urdu, English, Bengali and Punjabi, he writes under the pseudonym ‘Ravi Maun’. He is an expert in transcreation of Urdu poetries/shayaris of renowned shayars & she’rs and in a period spanning about 47 years, he has transcreated & translated several thousands of Urdu poetries to English. He has recently extended his passion of transcreation of poetries in Kannada language to Hindi. He developed this unique passion after being influenced with the shayris of renowned Urdu shayar Dr. Bashir Badr, who was living with his family in the AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) campus. Ravi Maun used to stop at his residence and listen to his poetries on the way to Ziauddin hostel from medical college. Ravi Maun’s work is available on his blog on www.ravimaun.com. Few of his couplets are posted here at the end to extinguish the curiosity to understand his work.
An interactive session with him has been organized by DOBARA as ‘BASHIR-K-SAFEER’, where he will share the interesting moments spent with Dr. Bashir Badr and will throw light on the art & importance of transcreation. He will also advise on the lifestyle and precautions to be taken by the elderly/aged people in their daily life for a safe and healthy living ahead.

Yasujirō Ozu (12 December 1903 – 12 December 1963) was a Japanese filmmaker. He began his career during the era of silent films, and his last films were made in color in the early 1960s. Ozu first made a number of short comedies before turning to more serious themes in the 1930s. The most prominent themes of Ozu's work are family and marriage, and especially the relationships between generations. Lamakaan invites you to Anwar Moazzam Memorial Lecture delivered by Prof. Md. Suleman Siddiqi on Sufism: Past & Present.

The aim of this lecture is to trace the rise and development of Sufi spirituality during the early history of Islam on the one hand and the transition that took place during the later centuries on the other. Sufism is the phenomenon of intense Divine love (‘ishq), remembrance (zikr), contemplation (muraqibah), and beatific vision of God (ruyat-i bari-i taala). It is an exercise to purify the soul (ruh), self (nafs) and heart (dil). It is a transition from this world to the other world. It is a process where the Sufi remains subservient to the commands of God all the time, where his will becomes the Will of God. As Islam moved out of the confines of Arabia, it imbibed local cultures, customs, and traditions, leading to the transition.

About Prof. Md. Suleman Siddiqi: Prof Md. Suleman Siddiqi is a former Vice Chancellor of Osmania University, Hyd. and founder Registrar of MANUU, Hyd.

About Prof. Anwar Moazzam: Prof Anwar Moazzam (1928 – 2023) leaves behind him a large contingent of students, followers, and admirers. The stand up comedy act revolves around the day-to-day lives of laborers and the violence they experience. Through comedy, I attempt to trace stories of identities, masculinity, patriarchy, caste & class, food and many other forms of prejudice that shape the daily lives of workers.

Shudrka Hyderabad presents the monologue “I DON’T MOVE, I DON’T SCREAM” inspired by Lo Stupro (The Rape, 1983), adapted and translated in English by Swapan Mondal. The play draws on Rame’s traumatic personal experiences after she was kidnapped, tortured, and gang raped in 1973 by a neofascist group that was discovered to have been commissioned by several high-ranking Milanese police officials.

This is an autobiographical performance and refers to its historical links with women's strife for justice. It is a reworked theatrical text on the use of sexual violence in the recent wave of violence in different parts of India.

The book Titled "డబ్బు అమ్మబడును"is going to launch which is a collection of short stories.

Urbansketchers Hyderabad is celebrating a major milestone: its 300th event, with the week-long #uskhyd300 from December 8-14, 2024. Over these seven days, participants will come together to document the city’s diverse landmarks and everyday scenes through 300 unique sketches. This special event honors Hyderabad's culture, architecture, and people, inviting artists of all levels to capture the city's essence.

The event begins with a workshop at Lamakaan on December 8 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. This session will introduce urban sketching techniques, from capturing perspectives to adding dynamic line work, and provide participants with event schedules, materials suggestions, and daily themes. Lamakaan serves as the gathering point for this kickoff and as the venue for the final exhibition on December 14, where all 300 sketches will be displayed, creating a visual tapestry of Hyderabad.

Each day, participants will sketch at a new iconic location, exploring Hyderabad's beauty and variety. Planned spots include Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace, Hussain Sagar Lake, and Laad Bazaar, each with its unique character. Mornings feature sketch walks, afternoons offer workshops led by experienced artists on advanced techniques, and evenings bring everyone together to share and discuss the day’s artwork.

Special activities include a night sketching session at Charminar, a children’s sketching workshop, and a bustling market sketch at Laad Bazaar. The closing event on December 14 at Lamakaan will showcase the week’s collective work, inviting the public to view the 300 sketches and hear from participants. The #uskhyd300 event reflects the dedication of Urbansketchers Hyderabad to its art community and aims to deepen connections among artists while showcasing Hyderabad’s vibrant urban landscape.

Origin, Evolution, and How to Fight it

In order to build an effective resistance against fascism, it's important to understand the phenomenon of fascism in general and its Indian variety in particular. It is also important to understand the origin and evolution of Hindutva fascism and how it managed to spread its dangerous ideas to every pore of Indian society. To discuss this 'In Defense of Reason' is organising a discussion on Sunday, 8 December at 4 pm at Lamakaan, Hyderabad.

The campaign encourages everyone to contribute to ending violence against women, girls and marginalised communities, support women’s rights activists, and resist any rollback of women’s and marginalised communities rights. It also provides a platform for youth participants to showcase their own campaigns.

This year, the event was facilitated by youth as part of the Emerging Leaders Programme. It featured an open space led by Rubaroo with various self-facilitated stalls. Activities included exploring safe and unsafe spaces related to gender, self-love exercises, quizzes to challenge existing notions of gender roles, poetry recitations, dance performances, and more.

J. Devika is a noted Malayali historian, trenchant feminist, social critic, and academic from Kerala. She currently researches and teaches at the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram as a professor. Kya Hua Is Shehar ko? - 40 years on!

Kya hua is shehar ko is a 95 minute long documentary film which centres around religious processions in Hyderabad city as the locus of a new political sensibility that was being engineered in Hyderabad during the 80s.
The film maker Deepa Dhanraj follows the procession and its aftermatth of violence and speaks with victims and eye-witnesses. 40 years on - some of the sensibilities that were marginal to mainstream life have now become the mainstream. In this screening, we hope younger citizens of Hyderabad who are grappling with their own concerns about how the city around them is changing will get an opportunity to watch a poignant documentary film and hear the maker of the film to understand how her own concerns have remained the same and also changed.

"Christspiracy - The Spirituality Secret" examines the intersections between various religions, veganism, and animal rights, aiming to explore how religious values might align with compassion towards animals. The film delves into biblical texts, theological perspectives, and historical narratives to question traditional Christian stances on animal use and advocate for a vegan lifestyle as a form of spiritual alignment.

A cyber safety awareness session focuses on educating participants, especially students, about safe online practices to protect themselves from potential cyber threats. The session covers essential topics like safeguarding personal information, recognizing phishing and scams, understanding privacy settings, and learning the importance of strong passwords. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, these sessions aim to empower participants with practical knowledge to navigate the digital world responsibly, ensuring their online safety and security.

Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Batik printing, is a traditional textile technique originating from Indonesia and now practised across the States of Gujarat, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, each in its own style. In this batik printing workshop, attendees shall learn about the history and cultural significance of batik while gaining hands-on experience in the craft.

The participants will be introduced to the materials, including fabric, wax, and dyes. They will then be taught how to use block printing tools to apply wax patterns onto fabric, creating a resist design. After waxing, participants will dye and wash their fabrics, allowing them to witness the transformation as the wax is removed to reveal vibrant, intricate patterns. The attendees can leave the workshop with their unique batik pieces, hopefully having developed a deeper appreciation for this beautiful art form and its cultural roots. Workshop Details:

‘TRANSCREATION’ is a rare art of poetic expression, where the poetry in one language is translated in another language with near precise meaning and rhyming, matching with the original form and language. Dr. Ravindra Kumar Choudhary, M.S.(Ortho.) is an orthopedic surgeon by profession based at Bangalore. A poet of Hindi, Urdu, English, Bengali and Punjabi, he writes under the pseudonym ‘Ravi Maun’. He is an expert in transcreation of Urdu poetries/shayaris of renowned shayars & she’rs and in a period spanning about 47 years, he has transcreated & translated several thousands of Urdu poetries to English. He has recently extended his passion of transcreation of poetries in Kannada language to Hindi. He developed this unique passion after being influenced with the shayris of renowned Urdu shayar Dr. Bashir Badr, who was living with his family in the AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) campus. Ravi Maun used to stop at his residence and listen to his poetries on the way to Ziauddin hostel from medical college. Ravi Maun’s work is available on his blog on www.ravimaun.com. Few of his couplets are posted here at the end to extinguish the curiosity to understand his work.
An interactive session with him has been organized by DOBARA as ‘BASHIR-K-SAFEER’, where he will share the interesting moments spent with Dr. Bashir Badr and will throw light on the art & importance of transcreation. Lamakaan invites you to Anwar Moazzam Memorial Lecture delivered by Prof. Md. Suleman Siddiqi on Sufism: Past & Present.

The aim of this lecture is to trace the rise and development of Sufi spirituality during the early history of Islam on the one hand and the transition that took place during the later centuries on the other. Sufism is the phenomenon of intense Divine love (‘ishq), remembrance (zikr), contemplation (muraqibah), and beatific vision of God (ruyat-i bari-i taala). It is an exercise to purify the soul (ruh), self (nafs) and heart (dil). It is a transition from this world to the other world. It is a process where the Sufi remains subservient to the commands of God all the time, where his will becomes the Will of God. As Islam moved out of the confines of Arabia, it imbibed local cultures, customs, and traditions, leading to the transition.

The stand up comedy act revolves around the day-to-day lives of laborers and the violence they experience. Through comedy, I attempt to trace stories of identities, masculinity, patriarchy, caste & class, food and many other forms of prejudice that shape the daily lives of workers.

Shudrka Hyderabad presents the monologue “I DON’T MOVE, I DON’T SCREAM” inspired by Lo Stupro (The Rape, 1983), adapted and translated in English by Swapan Mondal. The play draws on Rame’s traumatic personal experiences after she was kidnapped, tortured, and gang raped in 1973 by a neofascist group that was discovered to have been commissioned by several high-ranking Milanese police officials.

This is an autobiographical performance and refers to its historical links with women's strife for justice. It is a reworked theatrical text on the use of sexual violence in the recent wave of violence in different parts of India.

Urbansketchers Hyderabad is celebrating a major milestone: its 300th event, with the week-long #uskhyd300 from December 8-14, 2024. Over these seven days, participants will come together to document the city’s diverse landmarks and everyday scenes through 300 unique sketches. This special event honors Hyderabad's culture, architecture, and people, inviting artists of all levels to capture the city's essence.

The event begins with a workshop at Lamakaan on December 8 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. This session will introduce urban sketching techniques, from capturing perspectives to adding dynamic line work, and provide participants with event schedules, materials suggestions, and daily themes. Lamakaan serves as the gathering point for this kickoff and as the venue for the final exhibition on December 14, where all 300 sketches will be displayed, creating a visual tapestry of Hyderabad.

Each day, participants will sketch at a new iconic location, exploring Hyderabad's beauty and variety. Planned spots include Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace, Hussain Sagar Lake, and Laad Bazaar, each with its unique character. Mornings feature sketch walks, afternoons offer workshops led by experienced artists on advanced techniques, and evenings bring everyone together to share and discuss the day’s artwork.

Special activities include a night sketching session at Charminar, a children’s sketching workshop, and a bustling market sketch at Laad Bazaar. The closing event on December 14 at Lamakaan will showcase the week’s collective work, inviting the public to view the 300 sketches and hear from participants. The #uskhyd300 event reflects the dedication of Urbansketchers Hyderabad to its art community and aims to deepen connections among artists while showcasing Hyderabad’s vibrant urban landscape.

In order to build an effective resistance against fascism, it's important to understand the phenomenon of fascism in general and its Indian variety in particular. It is also important to understand the origin and evolution of Hindutva fascism and how it managed to spread its dangerous ideas to every pore of Indian society. To discuss this 'In Defense of Reason' is organising a discussion on Sunday, 8 December at 4 pm at Lamakaan, Hyderabad.

It was wonderful to collaborate with you for Rubaroo's flagship event, Rubaroo with Gender 2024! We truly value your partnership and support for this event and for the years we’ve worked together to create a safe and empowering community for young people across the city.

Rubaroo with Gender takes place annually on December 10th, coinciding with International Human Rights Day. The campaign encourages everyone to contribute to ending violence against women, girls and marginalised communities, support women’s rights activists, and resist any rollback of women’s and marginalised communities rights. It also provides a platform for youth participants to showcase their own campaigns.

This year, the event was facilitated by youth as part of the Emerging Leaders Programme. It featured an open space led by Rubaroo with various self-facilitated stalls. Activities included exploring safe and unsafe spaces related to gender, self-love exercises, quizzes to challenge existing notions of gender roles, poetry recitations, dance performances, and more.

Yasujirō Ozu (12 December 1903 – 12 December 1963) was a Japanese filmmaker. He began his career during the era of silent films, and his last films were made in color in the early 1960s. Ozu first made a number of short comedies before turning to more serious themes in the 1930s. The most prominent themes of Ozu's work are family and marriage, and especially the relationships between generations. His most widely beloved films include Late Spring (1949), Tokyo Story (1953) and An Autumn Afternoon (1962).

Widely regarded as one of the world's greatest and most influential filmmakers, Ozu's work has continued to receive acclaim since his death. In the 2012 Sight & Sound poll, critics voted Ozu's Tokyo Story the third-greatest film of all time worldwide. In the same poll, Tokyo Story was voted the greatest film of all time by 358 directors and filmmakers worldwide.

About the film: Early Spring is a 1956 film by Yasujirō Ozu about a married salaryman (Ryō Ikebe) who escapes the monotony of married life and his work at a fire brick manufacturing company by beginning an affair with a fellow office worker (Keiko Kishi). The film also deals with the hardships of the salaryman lifestyle. "I wanted," Ozu said, "to portray what you might call the pathos of the white-collar life."
