About the film: Umbro, the threshold of a home, is the liminal space that speaks to the lives of women, including the filmmaker's mother and her friends who live in the small town of Dhrangadhra in Gujarat, India. The film explores joyful friendships among women, often dismissed and unsung - carrying in them moments of shared stories, solidarities, conflicts and, most of all, routine acts of resistance. About the film: Manthan, also released under the translated title The Churning, is a 1976 Hindi film directed by Shyam Benegal, inspired by the pioneering milk cooperative movement of Verghese Kurien, and written jointly by him and Vijay Tendulkar. It is set amidst the backdrop of India's White Revolution. Aside from this project's great measurable success, it also demonstrated the power of "collective might" as it was entirely crowdfunded by 500,000 farmers who donated Rs. 2 each. Manthan is the first crowdfunded Indian film.

The film won the 1977 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Vijay Tendulkar. It was also India's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1976. A restored version was released in the Cannes Classics section of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Preeti Sagar sang the title song ("Mero Gaam Katha Parey"). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for that year. The song was later used as the soundtrack for Amul's television commercial.

‘Unconditional’ (with English subtitles) tells the story of two inspiring policy experiments in Bangladesh and India, which turned traditional social policymaking on its head. Told through the stories of pilot participants, with contributions from their community organisers, this 30 - minute documentary sheds light on the power of Universal Basic Income + (‘UBI plus’) and points towards a future where unconditionality is the foundation stone of social policy.

The film screening will be followed by a discussion with the makers of the film and the attendees.

"Footnotes of Life” is a play based mainly on randomly picked excerpts from our lives that speak volumes about the unsaid emotions relevant to any relationship, be it a personal relationship or just a chance meeting with any stranger.

Here we have excerpts from a situation wherein two young men from totally different backgrounds happen to meet and how their conversation leads to an unbreakable bond.

Story of two boys, one from an affluent business background and the other from a small village.

One sees life with a "VR glass," living in a virtual world of the privileged class of the country who is disappointed in his father for choosing the same exotic foreign country for holidays for the second time in a row.

The other comes from a farming family whose father is a victim of the agrarian crises of our country and attempted suicide to save his family from loan sharks.

These two meet at a scholarship exam and strike up a conversation that results in an unbreakable bond.

The play gradually touches the emotional chord of every human life.

Kathak yatra-
Kathak originated in temples- Kathak, one of India’s prominent and widely-known classical dance form, is a glorious legacy of
culture, representing a rich heritage of poetry, literature, mythology, philosophy and emotions.
Originally, artists known as the Kathakaars told mythological stories (harikatha) in the
temples of northern India which was deeply rooted in philosophy and
spirituality.
Court period - Kathak was practised in the magnificent palaces of Hindu emperors and those
of Mughal rulers. From being a devotional temple art to becoming an intricate dance form, it
enriched itself with the Persian culture and as such, the aesthetics of the dance evolved,
transforming Kathak with elaborate costumes and Persian influences. The Kathakaars communicate
stories through rhythmic foot movements, hand gestures, facial expressions and eye work.
Proscenium period- after independence it is performed on the stage where the audience is in front of the artists. It is widely appreciated dance form in the world. A lot of experimental works are presented apart from the traditional repertoire.

Aradhana Karhade Shastri, born in a musical family, started learning music from her mother late. Smt. Usha Karhade and then continued learning from father, late. Dr. N.K. Karhade.

Surendra Bharti

Trained in Hindustani Vocal music under Pandit Vajendra Aashrith.
Trained in Harmonium under Late Pandit Vasudev Rao ji Lasinkar.
In his musical journey of over five decades, he has accompanied on the harmonium, almost all of the leading vocalists of India including numerous concerts over the years with Pandit Jasraj, Vidushi Malini Rajurkar, Vidushi Prabha Atre, Pandit Rajan-Sajan Mishra among many stalwarts of Hindustan music.

He is a Chartered Accountant by profession and a Musician by passion!


Vivek Kayal is a well known tabla artist and Tabla teacher of Hyderabad.
He is a senior disciple of Late. Pandit Suhas Shastri ji of Hyderabad and also learnt Tabla under Taalyogi padmashree. Pandit Suresh Talwalkar ji of Pune.
He has completed his Sangeet Alankar and is a graded artist of All india radio.

1948 Hyderabad Readings, edited by Mohammed Ayub Khan, Anant Maringanti and Gita Ramaswamy, 334 pages, Rs. 600 Why does remembering Hyderabad of 1948 still matter? For generations, people have held on to fragments of this time—memories locked away, untold stories, unspoken grief. For countless families, the events of 1948 weren’t just history—they were a rupture, a moment when public upheaval became deeply personal.
This anthology is a treasure chest of voices from that era. Some are firsthand accounts, raw and vivid. Others are the work of researchers trying to untangle the complexity of what really happened. Still others are carefully curated resources by people who knew how vital it was to preserve this history. Together, they weave a rich tapestry of a time that shaped not just Hyderabad, but the lives of countless people who called it home.

Anant Maringanti is a Hyderabadi, a geographer, an urbanist, an enthusiast for the idea of non territorial belongings - the Deccan for instance. He is co-founder and director of Hyderabad Urban Lab, a multi disciplinary action research centre.
Gita Ramaswamy is best known for her work with Hyderabad Book Trust that has published over four hundred and fifty titles in Telugu since 1980. HBT has now started an English imprint, SouthSide Books.

About the film: Mandi (English: Market Place) is a 1983 Hindi-language film directed by Shyam Benegal. Based on a classic Urdu short story, Aanandi, by writer Ghulam Abbas, the film narrates the story of a brothel situated in the heart of a city, an area that some politicians want for its prime locality. The film is a satirical comedy on politics and prostitution and stars Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Naseeruddin Shah, among others.

The film won the 1984 National Film Award for Best Art Direction for Nitish Roy. It was selected at the Indian Panorama at Filmostav, Bombay, in 1984, and was invited to the Los Angeles Exposition (FILMEX), the Hong Kong International Film Festival 1984, and the London Film Festival 1983.

Mandi is the Hindi film with the highest number of Filmfare Award winners (12) in the cast (Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Neena Gupta, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Saeed Jaffrey, Annu Kapoor, Satish Kaushik, Pankaj Kapur, Amrish Puri, Ila Arun and K. On January 23rd, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born and has inspired many youth to join the fight for Indian Independence. He was a youth icon, a visionary and the one who believed that India's Cultural Development and Economic Development can go hand in hand.

Our organization Bharat Dekho is celebrating his birthday and will share his inspiration through stories, poems, Short film discussions and photo gallery.

The 'Women Question' or the question of women's liberation has long occupied the centre-stage in the discussions within both Marxist and Feminist paradigms. There have been innumerable attempts to build a bridge between the two through a middle-road approach by those who call themselves 'Marxist Feminists', 'Socialist Feminists' or 'Proletarian Feminists'. However, the relationship between Marxism and Feminism has remained and continues to remain a rather strained and controversial one. In our next program we plan to discuss and ask that can there be really a "union" between Marxism and Feminism which some have termed ironically as an unhappy one? Also, what does this 'dual-systems' approach - Feminism for dealing with the question of women's oppression and Marxism for dealing with the question of economic/class exploitation - offer in terms of real transformatory and emancipatory politics, not just for a handful of women but for the masses of women? This is not some peripheral issue but an issue of utmost fundamental importance for all those who want to change the current state of affairs vis-a-vis gender oppression in general and women oppression in particular.

To discuss questions like these and many more, ‘In Defense of Reason’ has invited Shivani Kaul, a political activist based in Delhi who is engaged in working-class organizing. Shivani is also President of 'Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union'.

This is a painting workshop by an upcoming artists, the aim is to sparkle the joy of colors and painting in the residents of hyderabad. This workshop would be taken by the artist, Ipshita Mahapatra who runs a page by the name of aakaar.by.ipshita. This would be a paid event, but we will charge the minimal amount to just cover for the art supplies and that is it.

Focus High School is a member of the TED-Ed Community. We plan to conduct a training workshop for 15-20 of our Class 9 students who will eventually prepare for a TED Talk on topics of their choice. We intend to do the final presentations at Lamakan. No fee is charged by us.

About the film: Manthan, also released under the translated title The Churning, is a 1976 Hindi film directed by Shyam Benegal, inspired by the pioneering milk cooperative movement of Verghese Kurien, and written jointly by him and Vijay Tendulkar. It is set amidst the backdrop of India's White Revolution. Aside from this project's great measurable success, it also demonstrated the power of "collective might" as it was entirely crowdfunded by 500,000 farmers who donated Rs. 2 each. Manthan is the first crowdfunded Indian film.

The film won the 1977 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Vijay Tendulkar. It was also India's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1976. A restored version was released in the Cannes Classics section of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Preeti Sagar sang the title song ("Mero Gaam Katha Parey"). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for that year. The song was later used as the soundtrack for Amul's television commercial.

‘Unconditional’ (with English subtitles) tells the story of two inspiring policy experiments in Bangladesh and India, which turned traditional social policymaking on its head. Told through the stories of pilot participants, with contributions from their community organisers, this 30 - minute documentary sheds light on the power of Universal Basic Income + (‘UBI plus’) and points towards a future where unconditionality is the foundation stone of social policy.

"Footnotes of Life” is a play based mainly on randomly picked excerpts from our lives that speak volumes about the unsaid emotions relevant to any relationship, be it a personal relationship or just a chance meeting with any stranger.

Here we have excerpts from a situation wherein two young men from totally different backgrounds happen to meet and how their conversation leads to an unbreakable bond.

Story of two boys, one from an affluent business background and the other from a small village.

One sees life with a "VR glass," living in a virtual world of the privileged class of the country who is disappointed in his father for choosing the same exotic foreign country for holidays for the second time in a row.

The other comes from a farming family whose father is a victim of the agrarian crises of our country and attempted suicide to save his family from loan sharks.

These two meet at a scholarship exam and strike up a conversation that results in an unbreakable bond.

The play gradually touches the emotional chord of every human life.

Kathak yatra-
Kathak originated in temples- Kathak, one of India’s prominent and widely-known classical dance form, is a glorious legacy of
culture, representing a rich heritage of poetry, literature, mythology, philosophy and emotions.
Originally, artists known as the Kathakaars told mythological stories (harikatha) in the
temples of northern India which was deeply rooted in philosophy and
spirituality.
Court period - Kathak was practised in the magnificent palaces of Hindu emperors and those
of Mughal rulers. From being a devotional temple art to becoming an intricate dance form, it
enriched itself with the Persian culture and as such, the aesthetics of the dance evolved,
transforming Kathak with elaborate costumes and Persian influences. The Kathakaars communicate
stories through rhythmic foot movements, hand gestures, facial expressions and eye work.
Proscenium period- after independence it is performed on the stage where the audience is in front of the artists. It is widely appreciated dance form in the world. A lot of experimental works are presented apart from the traditional repertoire.

Aradhana Karhade Shastri, born in a musical family, started learning music from her mother late. Smt. Usha Karhade and then continued learning from father, late. Dr. N.K. Karhade.

Surendra Bharti

Trained in Hindustani Vocal music under Pandit Vajendra Aashrith.
Trained in Harmonium under Late Pandit Vasudev Rao ji Lasinkar.
In his musical journey of over five decades, he has accompanied on the harmonium, almost all of the leading vocalists of India including numerous concerts over the years with Pandit Jasraj, Vidushi Malini Rajurkar, Vidushi Prabha Atre, Pandit Rajan-Sajan Mishra among many stalwarts of Hindustan music.

He is a Chartered Accountant by profession and a Musician by passion!


Vivek Kayal is a well known tabla artist and Tabla teacher of Hyderabad.
He is a senior disciple of Late. Pandit Suhas Shastri ji of Hyderabad and also learnt Tabla under Taalyogi padmashree. Pandit Suresh Talwalkar ji of Pune.
He has completed his Sangeet Alankar and is a graded artist of All india radio.

Remembering, Reconciling and Forgiving

1948 Hyderabad Readings, edited by Mohammed Ayub Khan, Anant Maringanti and Gita Ramaswamy, 334 pages, Rs. 600 Why does remembering Hyderabad of 1948 still matter? For generations, people have held on to fragments of this time—memories locked away, untold stories, unspoken grief. For countless families, the events of 1948 weren’t just history—they were a rupture, a moment when public upheaval became deeply personal.
This anthology is a treasure chest of voices from that era. Some are firsthand accounts, raw and vivid. Others are the work of researchers trying to untangle the complexity of what really happened. Still others are carefully curated resources by people who knew how vital it was to preserve this history. Together, they weave a rich tapestry of a time that shaped not just Hyderabad, but the lives of countless people who called it home.

Anant Maringanti is a Hyderabadi, a geographer, an urbanist, an enthusiast for the idea of non territorial belongings - the Deccan for instance. He is co-founder and director of Hyderabad Urban Lab, a multi disciplinary action research centre.
Gita Ramaswamy is best known for her work with Hyderabad Book Trust that has published over four hundred and fifty titles in Telugu since 1980. HBT has now started an English imprint, SouthSide Books.

About the film: Mandi (English: Market Place) is a 1983 Hindi-language film directed by Shyam Benegal. Based on a classic Urdu short story, Aanandi, by writer Ghulam Abbas, the film narrates the story of a brothel situated in the heart of a city, an area that some politicians want for its prime locality. The film is a satirical comedy on politics and prostitution and stars Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Naseeruddin Shah, among others.

The film won the 1984 National Film Award for Best Art Direction for Nitish Roy. It was selected at the Indian Panorama at Filmostav, Bombay, in 1984, and was invited to the Los Angeles Exposition (FILMEX), the Hong Kong International Film Festival 1984, and the London Film Festival 1983.

On January 23rd, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born and has inspired many youth to join the fight for Indian Independence. He was a youth icon, a visionary and the one who believed that India's Cultural Development and Economic Development can go hand in hand.

Our organization Bharat Dekho is celebrating his birthday and will share his inspiration through stories, poems, Short film discussions and photo gallery.

The 'Women Question' or the question of women's liberation has long occupied the centre-stage in the discussions within both Marxist and Feminist paradigms. There have been innumerable attempts to build a bridge between the two through a middle-road approach by those who call themselves 'Marxist Feminists', 'Socialist Feminists' or 'Proletarian Feminists'. However, the relationship between Marxism and Feminism has remained and continues to remain a rather strained and controversial one. In our next program we plan to discuss and ask that can there be really a "union" between Marxism and Feminism which some have termed ironically as an unhappy one? Also, what does this 'dual-systems' approach - Feminism for dealing with the question of women's oppression and Marxism for dealing with the question of economic/class exploitation - offer in terms of real transformatory and emancipatory politics, not just for a handful of women but for the masses of women? This is not some peripheral issue but an issue of utmost fundamental importance for all those who want to change the current state of affairs vis-a-vis gender oppression in general and women oppression in particular.

To discuss questions like these and many more, ‘In Defense of Reason’ has invited Shivani Kaul, a political activist based in Delhi who is engaged in working-class organizing. Shivani is also President of 'Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union'.

“The Importance of Being Earnest” revolves around two bachelors, Jack `John` Worthing and Algernon `Algy` Moncrieff. They both lead a double life, aided by a fictional alterego, to escape the hassles caused by societal obligations. John’s alterego is his wicked younger brother, Ernest; and Algy’s is his permanent invalid friend, Bunbury, who are both indispensably resourceful. They attempt to win the hearts of two women, Gwenolden Fairfax and Cecily Cardew, respectively.

However, complications arise when the women discover that their beaus are not as “Earnest” as they claim to be. To top it all, the conflict reaches its zenith with the formidable Lady Bracknell’s earnest disapproval of their sordid affair. A scientist goes temporarily blind due to accident in the lab and while he is resting in his house restlessly trying to get used to his blindness, a thief enters the house but somehow manages to take advantage of his mistaken identity or rather say confused identity by Scientist wife, maid and a friend, who all contribute to the scientist’s troubles, Will the thief get caught or will he manage to sketch away is the question!!

This is a painting workshop by an upcoming artists, the aim is to sparkle the joy of colors and painting in the residents of hyderabad. This workshop would be taken by the artist, Ipshita Mahapatra who runs a page by the name of aakaar.by.ipshita. This would be a paid event, but we will charge the minimal amount to just cover for the art supplies and that is it.

"Vote is Important" is a community awareness event focused on highlighting the power of voting and its impact on shaping a democratic society. Focus High School is a member of the TED-Ed Community. We plan to conduct a training workshop for 15-20 of our Class 9 students who will eventually prepare for a TED Talk on topics of their choice. We intend to do the final presentations at Lamakan. No fee is charged by us.
