Remembering John Huston
Wed Aug 13, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Every Wednesday in August 2025, Lamakaan will echo with cinematic reverence as it hosts “Remembering John Huston”—a tribute to one of Hollywood’s most daring and enduring auteurs. Born on August 5, 1906, in Nevada, Missouri, and passing away on August 28, 1987, Huston’s life spanned eight decades of artistic rebellion, storytelling mastery, and global wanderlust. His legacy includes 37 directed films, most of which he also wrote, and many are now considered timeless classics. About the Director: From redefining noir with The Maltese Falcon to capturing the raw human spirit in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Huston’s work was marked by philosophical depth, visual elegance, and a fascination with flawed characters on existential quests. He directed his father, Walter Huston, to an Oscar, and decades later, his daughter, Anjelica Huston, to hers, making cinema a family affair. At Lamakaan, these Wednesdays will not just screen his films—they’ll celebrate a man who turned literature into living images and made imperfection beautiful.

R. Burnett, it tells the story of a jewel robbery in a Midwestern city.

Produced and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film was released on May 12, 1950. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, and Huston won a National Board of Review Award for his direction. Uncharted Science Book Reading
Sat Aug 16, 5:00 PM
Lamakaan
Join us for a captivating book reading and discussion of A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through?, the bold and witty exploration of space colonization by acclaimed science communicator duo Zach and Kelly Weinersmith.

In this session, we’ll dive into the surprising, hilarious, and deeply researched truths behind humanity’s dreams of interplanetary living. Through their signature blend of rigorous science, clever humor, and razor-sharp skepticism, the Weinersmiths peel back the layers of popular space narratives to ask hard questions: Are we technologically ready to build habitable cities on Mars? What are the ethical, legal, and biological challenges of settling other planets? And most importantly—should we?

Whether you're a space enthusiast, a science fiction lover, or simply curious about the future of humanity beyond Earth, this reading promises to entertain, enlighten, and spark meaningful conversation.

Come for the science, stay for the satire—and prepare to rethink everything you thought you knew about the final frontier.

11th Hasan Memorial Lecture
Sat Aug 16, 7:00 PM

Title - Time is out of joint - Aug 16th, 2025.
V Geetha is a feminist historian, writer and translator. She has been associated with the Indian women's movements for over three decades. She writes in Tamil and English on caste, gender, labour and education. Her published work includes 'Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and the Question of Socialism in India' and 'Undoing Impunity: Speech after Sexuao Violence'.

At 78, the India we have inherited seems particularly inchoate and headed for disaster. Is the present moment exceptional in its evil? Or is it the culmination of a history we have not fully reckoned with?
V. Geeta draws on anti caste and feminist thought to suggest how we may 'read' our times.
The title itself is of course from Shakespeare's Hamlet, signifying a moment when Hamlet's entire world falls out of sync.

AUS DEM NICHTS - German Movie
Tue Aug 19, 7:00 PM
Goethe - Zentrum Hyderabad & Lamakaan
GZH & Lamakaan invite you to the German Movie Night this Tuesday evening.

AUS DEM NICHTS
Director: Fatih Akin
Year: 2017
Language: German (with English Subtitles)
Runtime: 106 Minutes
Genre: Crime Drama | Legal Thriller | Psychological Revenge

Synopsis:
Aus dem Nichts (English title: In the Fade) is a gripping and emotionally raw drama that follows
Katja, a woman whose world collapses after her Kurdish-German husband and their young son are
killed in a neo-Nazi terrorist bombing in Hamburg. What begins as an unbearable personal tragedy
soon becomes a tense courtroom drama, one that tests not only the legal system but Katja’s very sense
of justice, identity, and will to go on. When the verdict fails her, she is forced to confront the
impossible choice between acceptance and revenge.
The film earned widespread critical acclaim, with Diane Kruger winning Best Actress at the 2017
Cannes Film Festival for her powerful portrayal of Katja. It went on to win the Golden Globe for
Best Foreign Language Film (2018) and was Germany’s official entry to the 90th Academy
Awards, making the shortlist. It was also nominated for Best International Film at the Critics’
Choice Awards and screened at top festivals including TIFF and Telluride.
With Fatih Akin’s deft direction and Kruger’s searing performance, Aus dem Nichts explores grief,
justice, and the emotional toll of loss. But more than a personal journey, it’s a haunting social
commentary on racism, terrorism, and legal failure.
Dark, emotionally charged, and deeply relevant, Aus dem Nichts is a must-watch for fans of world
cinema, courtroom thrillers, and psychological drama that lingers long after the credits roll.

All are Welcome!

About the film: Set in 1920s Mexico, it follows two down-on-their-luck Americans—Fred C. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) and Bob Curtin (Tim Holt)—who team up with a seasoned prospector, Howard (Walter Huston), to search for gold in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. REELISTIC- Movie club
Sun Aug 24, 3:30 PM
REELISTIC
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

FailFest 4.0
Fri Aug 29, 7:00 PM
Nabeel Adeni
Everyone loves a success story. We love 'the before'- the messy middle: what went wrong before it went right, and what learned. That's what FailFest is all about.

FailFest is a fun, refreshingly honest forum that celebrates courage, resilience, and the surprising gifts of failure. While TEDx surfaces ideas worth spreading, FailFest uncovers wisdom worth sharing—real stories, raw edges, and hard-won insights.

Since 2013, we’ve welcomed a mix of bold voices: artists and techies, comics and chefs, journalists and entrepreneurs – all brave enough to say, “Yeah… I got screwed (or, I screwed up!). And, here’s what I learned…”. FailFest is not about glorifying failure; it’s about owning it, learning from it, and finding unexpected joy in the mess.

Why attend?
Because when people open up about what went wrong, something powerful happens: we feel less alone, more hopeful, and a little braver to try again. You'll walk away with practical tools, tactics, and strategies that have actually helped people bounce back.

Experience this yourself at our next FailFest.

Discussion on Vote Fraud
Sun Aug 31, 4:30 PM
In Defense of Reason

The impartiality and fairness of Election Commission of India have been seriously questioned in recent time, be it its partisan conduct in the last Loksabha elections or the charges of EVM tampering. But the recent revelation made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Chief Election Commissioner’s ridiculous responses in a press conference have completely unmasked this institution. This issue is not just about vote theft in a few constituencies, it’s about our democratic right to have free, fair and impartial elections. This crucial democratic rights can be protected only if a mass movement on this issue is built.
It is to discuss these important questions that we are conducting our next discussion. All are cordially invited.

As the play unfolds, a series of unexpected twists and turns shape the actor’s journey. The role deepens, the character comes to life, and the production descends into increasingly darker territory.

Film Title: THE ASPHALT JUNGLE | 1950 | 112 Mins | USA | English with English Subtitles

At the 1950 Venice Film Festival, Huston was nominated for the Golden Lion, and Sam Jaffe won the Best Actor Award.

An actor steps in to audition for the role of Hamlet, a part originally intended for a seasoned veteran who has suddenly walked out. With the cast assembled, the director’s vision in place, and rehearsals about to begin, one question remains— can this newcomer truly step into the character’s soul?

As the play unfolds, a series of unexpected twists and turns shape the actor’s journey. The role deepens, the character comes to life, and the production descends into increasingly darker territory. What begins as performance soon blurs with reality, drawing the director and actor into a shadowy world of obsession, betrayal, and madness.
