Film Screening: Wag the Dog
Tue Apr 7, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
Wag the Dog (1997) is a political satire from director Barry Levinson that follows an elaborate ruse fabricated in order to distract from a US presidential scandal. A 'spin doctor' (Robert de Niro) and a Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) get together to manipulate and construct public opinion using the rhetoric of warmongering, sentimentalism, and jingoism through the immense media machinery of the USA. Through biting satire and ridiculous developments, film follows the construction of this narrative and consequently exposes the dirtiness of bourgeois politics, the highly ideological functions of nationalism and war, the farce of "media neutrality", and the real face of the ruling classes. In the present-day scenario, as yet another imperialist war wreaks havoc in the world, as the ruling classes are drowning in scandal and crime, this film becomes all the more relevant.

Join us for a screening of "Wag the Dog" on 7th April, Tuesday, at 7pm, at Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. Entry is free.

AI + Design
Thu Apr 9, 7:30 PM
Iryna Snytiuk

“AI + Design: Human Judgment in Automated Systems.”

The idea is to host a practitioner-led conversation about what it actually means to design with AI — beyond the hype. The discussion would explore questions such as when designers should trust AI outputs, when human judgment should override them, and how accountability works in AI-assisted products.

The format would be simple and discussion-oriented:

• 2 invited speakers from the local design/technology community

• short opening perspectives (10–15 minutes each)

• followed by an open discussion with the audience

The event would be free and open to all, but we would require online sign-up to keep the group to around 20–30 participants, allowing for a more meaningful conversation.

Gond Painting Workshop with Trishna Patnaik
India has a rich tradition of folk arts. The custodians of which are the many tribes that live in the interiors of various states. The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and are Dravidian's whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States. The word Gond comes from the Dravidian expression kond , meaning green mountain . In the Gond belief system, besides Bara Deo (Great God), every hill, river, lake, tree, and rock is inhabited by a spirit and therefore sacred. Gond paintings are fascinating, where the artists express their faiths and beliefs, world view, their visual expression and sense of identity, both as a collective, and as individuals. The motifs are further associated with the rich repertoire of the community and strongly show the interactions with the cosmic, natural and social worlds of humans at multiple levels and contexts. Trans Art Rising — A Performance Art Evening of Resistance

Trans Art Rising is a powerful performance art evening and collective call to action—an artistic resistance movement that brings together performers, visual artists, writers, and allies to stand in solidarity with transgender and non-binary communities in the face of the Trans Amendment Bill 2026. Organized by Dragvanti, this gathering recognizes performance art not merely as entertainment, but as a living, breathing act of resistance—a space where bodies, voices, and stories become instruments of truth, visibility, and social change.

Through performance art, spoken word, drag, movement, and community expression, Trans Art Rising transforms the stage into a site of courage and defiance. It centers trans and non-binary voices, affirms identities, and reclaims dignity in a time when policies attempt to define who we are. Each performance becomes a statement: that our existence is valid, our stories matter, and our art is a form of survival.

This performance art evening is not just about witnessing—it is about standing together, feeling together, and rising together. It is a reminder that our lives are not amendments to be debated, but stories to be performed, heard, respected, and celebrated.
Join us at Lamakaan from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM for an evening of performance, solidarity, and resistance—because when art rises, communities rise, and when communities rise, change becomes possible. 🎭✊🏽🌈

Is a soulmate someone we find… or someone we become ready for?

Blending travel storytelling with introspection, this session invites the audience to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their own inner voice — much like the whispers one hears in the Himalayas.

This is not just a travel story. It is a mirror to the heart.

The story centers around a village where people believe in superstitions and are easily influenced by rumors and false claims. A symbolic object—the “kundeti kommu” (ram’s horn)—becomes the focus of exaggerated belief and manipulation.

Certain characters take advantage of villagers’ ignorance for personal gain. As misunderstandings grow, conflicts arise. Eventually, truth and reason challenge blind faith, exposing hypocrisy and social foolishness.

Participate in the Gond Painting Workshop, get a chance to appreciate the art form and create you very own Gond Art masterpiece on cartridge sheets with acrylic colours.

An Evening with Poet Sitaram
Thu Apr 16, 7:00 PM
Maruvam & Lamakaan
మరువం (maruvam) is a recently reactivated forum for probing, Intelligent, and artistically oriented talks/conversations/audio performances primarily in Telugu.

ధ్వని (dhvani) will be a fortnightly program slot on Maruvam for an immersive performative audio presentation of accomplished Telugu literary texts—poetry/fiction/prose—with appropriate multimedia support.

Bringing to the fore the full range of vocal and suggestive power of a language and popularising correct and efficient enunciation and vocalization is a dire cultural necessity of any society. More so with Telugu, which has suffered enormously due to various factors including quality of language teaching, the increasing dominance of English, as well as sloppy social and media articulation during the last three or four decades.

Maruvam and Dhwani are dedicated to working for and renewing and popularising good standards in Telugu articulation in all its varieties. We are starting off with a reading of his chosen poems by renowned Telugu poet Seetaram on 16th of April, Thursday at 7 pm.

Seetaram is known for his highly chiselled, critical and emotionally charged poems loaded with pungent irony and satire. He also reads and articulates his poems exceptionally well.

Do come and enjoy this immersive experience!

In association with Lamakaan. The second programme of dhvani will be a reading of a set of great Telugu short stories by Sumanaspati, former radio broadcaster. On 30 th of April, Thursday at 7 pm.

Willinger explores environmentally friendly methods of plastic production and engages in interviews with representatives from the plastic industry, scientists, and activists. The film portrays the current handling of the problem, which doesn’t inspire excessive optimism, but it also emphasizes that solutions do exist.

Whispers of Himalayas
Wed Apr 29, 6:00 PM
Ritwik Bhattacharyya
"Whispers of Himalayas" is a deeply personal storytelling session that takes the audience on an unusual journey to Gosaikund Lake in Nepal — not just across mountains, but within.

Through moments of solitude, unexpected encounters, and spiritual reflections, this session unfolds a raw and honest exploration of love, longing, and the idea of a soulmate.
