Remembering Ernst Lubitsch
Wed Jan 10, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
This New Year 2024 Lamakaan dives deep into the retrospective films of master directors.

While we celebrate the New Year with fervor and gaiety, let's celebrate the cinema of Hollywood's most elegant film director, Ernst Lubtisch's films.

Ernst Lubitsch (/ˈluːbɪtʃ/; January 29, 1892 – November 30, 1947) was a German-born film director, producer, writer, and actor. His urbane comedies of manners gave him the reputation of being Hollywood's most elegant and sophisticated director; as his prestige grew, his films were promoted as having "the Lubitsch touch". Among his best known works are Trouble in Paradise (1932), Design for Living (1933), Ninotchka (1939), The Shop Around the Corner (1940), To Be or Not to Be (1942) and Heaven Can Wait (1943).

He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director three times for The Patriot (1928), The Love Parade (1929), and Heaven Can Wait (1943). In 1946, he received an Honorary Academy Award for his distinguished contributions to the art of the motion picture.

Secular and Traditional Hindustani Music and Poetry by Prof Subendu Ghosh

Prof. Subendu Ghosh takes us on a musical journey through India’s secular traditions of Amir Khusro, Kabir, Tansen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqeer, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Tagore, Faiz, Ramprasad Bismil and others. Composed and sung by Subendu, this is a performance of sheer breadth of traditions covered in an evening.

This is a presentation to remind ourselves as we pass through a difficult period of communal tensions and violence, about India’s secular commitment. The people of India have lived in peace and harmony over the ages. Despite differences in religions, they have all contributed to build a very rich and composite culture, and this is beautifully reflected in our literature and music. This programme is a musical journey through India’s traditions of secular poetry, in a historical order beginning from the 13th century to the present day. Most of the music is composed and sung by Dr. Subhendu Ghosh and is based on Hindustani ragas or other musical forms including the traditional folk songs. The narrative includes a number of historical personalities like Hazrat Amir Khusro, Kabir, Mian Taan Sen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqir, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Ramprasad Bismil, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Rabindranath Tagore. This is a small effort to highlight the poetic genius of our Indian poets and pay our tribute to those who dedicated their lives to a Secular India.

H Pop - Book Discussion
Tue Jan 30, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan & Danish Majid
Lamakaan invites you to an intriguing Book Discussion with the Author.

H-Pop: The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars by Kunal Purohit.

Can a song trigger a murder?
Can a poem spark a riot?
Can a book divide people?

Away from the gaze of mainstream urban media, across India's dusty, sleepy towns, a brand of popular culture is quietly seizing the imagination of millions on the internet and off it. From catchy
songs with acerbic lyrics to poetry recited in kavi sammelans to social media influencers shaping opinions with their brand of ‘breaking news’ to books rescripting historical events, ‘Hindutva Pop’ or H-Pop is steadily creating societal acceptability for Hindutva’s core beliefs. By cleverly inserting Hindutva into popular culture, H-Pop normalizes Islamophobia, demonizes minorities, and vilifies its critics each day without ever making headlines.

What makes H-pop so popular? Who are its stars and its audience? Who is pouring in the money, the effort and the resources to produce and broadcast it? What is its impact on the BJP and Prime
Minister Modi’s popularity? And what kind of an India is it trying to create?

These are some questions that award-winning independent journalist Kunal Purohit explores in this riveting investigative book as he travels through India, profiling some of H-Pop’s most prolific
and popular creators—its stars and celebrities. He interrogates whether the creators are driven by ideology or commerce and what motivates the audience to consume their daily dose of bigotry. In
doing so, Purohit uncovers the frightening face of a New India that is united by hate and divided by art.

What happens when an Ambedkarite, wounded by the arrows of Kabir and Buddha, sings dhrupad? How do we see the fire in flowers? How form the formless? How does sound color light? What happens to a raga when passion turns secular, a color not often colored with?

Anand will present ragas in Dagarvani dhrupad style, featuring the suttas of the Buddha in Pali, the songs of Kabir, the cries for Bhim, a verse from the Thirukkural in Tamil, and a Vemana padyam in Telugu. Accompanied by a tanpura, he will see how a set of ragas color a morning ambling towards noon.

Anand studies dhrupad with Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar in Delhi and is the publisher of Navayana. As a youth, he was trained in Carnatic music by three gurus. He quit Carnatic at age twenty-five and did not sing for sixteen years.

The core of the play centers on four individuals who have convened at the funeral of a young woman whose tragic demise was a result of unrequited love. With a keen focus on the dynamics between men and women, the play sheds light on the oppression faced by women within a patriarchal society. The play skillfully delves into the intricacies of relationships across various socioeconomic backgrounds. Badal Sarkar subtly highlights that regardless of education or upbringing, men tend to exhibit a callous and apathetic approach toward matters of passion, love, and women.

*Songs for our times* by Kamaan

Building solidarity during times of divisiveness and hate

I’d like to share a selection of my songs through which I have tried to understand and respond to the many crises that we face today. Included in this selection is ‘American War Paar Da’, that has become a part of the anti-war toolkit since the American bombing of Afghanistan post 9/11.

I am hoping that my presentation will be a starting point to discuss ways of supporting grassroots cultural groups. Relaa is a collective of several such groups from various parts of India. I have been part of Relaa since 2016 and have had the opportunity to relate with several inspirational singers and musicians that are part of this collective.

I would like it to be a 2-hour long session, after which if some members want to stay on and discuss it would be good to have the option. I will take an hour to present my songs, which can be followed by sharing and discussion with the audience. Since I am keen to build a network of support for Relaa, I would prefer it to be for an audience of not more than 12. An indoor drawing room kind of space would be ideal for our purposes.

Remembering Robert Altman
Wed Feb 7, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Robert Bernard Altman - February 20, 1925 – November 20, 2006) was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was a five-time nominee of the Academy Award for Best Director and is considered an enduring figure from the New Hollywood era. His most famous directorial achievements include M*A*S*H (1970), McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), The Long Goodbye (1973), Nashville (1975), 3 Women (1977), The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993), and Gosford Park (2001).

Altman's style of filmmaking covered many genres, but usually with a "subversive" or "anti-Hollywood" twist which typically relied on satire and humor to express his personal views. Actors especially enjoyed working under his direction because he encouraged them to improvise. He preferred large ensemble casts for his films, and developed a multitrack recording technique which produced overlapping dialogue from multiple actors. This produced a more natural, more dynamic, and more complex experience for the viewer. He also used highly mobile camera work and zoom lenses to enhance the activity taking place on the screen. Critic Pauline Kael, writing about his directing style, said that Altman could "make film fireworks out of next to nothing.

Film Title: M*A*S*H | 1970 | 116 Mins | US | English Language with English Subtitles

About the film: The film depicts a unit of medical personnel stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) during the Korean War. It stars Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerritt, and Elliott Gould, with Sally Kellerman, Robert Duvall, René Auberjonois, Gary Burghoff, Roger Bowen, Michael Murphy, and in his film debut, professional football player Fred Williamson. Although the Korean War is the film's storyline setting, the subtext is the Vietnam War – a current event at the time the film was made.[1] Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau, who saw the film in college, said M*A*S*H was "perfect for the times. The cacophony of American culture was brilliantly reproduced onscreen."

Banerjee has never been hugged in his life and Aparna yearns for the love a of a child. A very cute, heartwarming yet a hard hitting play based on the conversation between two different people who expect the least in life is affection and that warmth.. that feeling of heartfelt love.

Film Title: NINOTCHKA | 1939 | 90 Mins | US | English Language with English Subtitles

About the film: Ninotchka is a 1939 American romantic comedy movie directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas, Ina Claire, Felix Bressart, Bela Lugosi, and Gregory Gaye. A Flash of Bhim by Anand
Sat Feb 3, 10:30 AM
