Climate change not a myth
Wed Oct 4, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Council
The speaker suggests that climate change is somewhat more real than Big Foot and Unicorns (unlike what some skeptics would have us believe). This is the speaker's personal journey from the ethics to the science of climate change.

45mins talk + 45mins Q&A

The talk will focus on the issues that reach beyond merely the hard sciences and into the social and economic domains, with their potential to call into question our economic systems and social choices (for example, the link between development and energy consumption). The talk will also explore the importance of the basic sciences in societal development.

Climate change skepticism" is a term that has, unfortunately, been hijacked largely (but not completely) by climate changedenialists. Unfortunate because all scientists may be described as skeptics and scientific progress is fundamentally driven by skepticism. The recent narrative accompanying climate change denialism has obscured the fundamental science on which climate research rests, the massive consensus among climate scientists the world over, and the incontrovertible evidence observations are providing us. What the talk proposes to convey is simple: climate change is real, it's us, it's dangerous, and we can indeed do something about it.

SPEAKER
Chirag Dhara is a physicist and mathematician, and recently concluded his PhD in earth sciences at the Max Planck Institute. His previous work was on foundational quantum physics, specializing in quantum randomness. He is drawn into the field of thermodynamic perspectives on climate, due to his concern about the twin problems of climate change and peak energy.

Invisible Minority
Sat Oct 7, 12:00 PM
Raksha Kumar
In 2016, I shot and directed a film titled An Invisible Minority - Rationalists in Contemporary India. The film is in interview format and tries to engage in larger philosophical debates around Rationalism. It was produced by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust and was screened on Doordarshan last year. Therefore, the film relies on interviews and television style conversations.

While the film begins by talking about the murders of Rationalists in the recent past, the crux of the film is to understand the idea of Rationalism - what are its motivations in an overtly religious country like India? Its history and current status.

Promo of the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiw_f74AEtM

The film was screened in Bangalore and Delhi. But, in the wake of Gauri Lankesh's death, I wish to screen the film in as many locations as possible.

This is my minute contribution to ensure dissent and rational thought are not silenced.

“Socialist Experiments of the Last Century and Path of New Socialist Revolution in the Current Century”

The great October Revolution of 1917 was undoubtedly an earth shattering event which impacted the life of the toiling masses, not just in Russia but across the world. It achieved success in establishing a socialist system that guaranteed equitable distribution of resources, provision of basic needs, and social justice for its people. It set an unparalleled model which drew plaudits from humanist intellectuals, and inspired generations of workers, peasants and other sections of the toiling masses all over the world to struggle for such a model of development. Sadly however, this first socialist experiment in the history of humanity ended in a setback. Historians as well as political activists have been engaged in analysing the causes of the defeat of the socialist experiments of the 20th century and the restoration of capitalism.

But, the global capitalist system today is itself undergoing an incurable structural crisis. It is hurtling us towards human and ecological devastation. Clearly, the objective conditions of revolution are ripening again. Yet, the subjective forces of revolution all over the world suffer from stagnation and disarray. Widespread dogmatic thinking prevailing within the communist movement in India and the world, is a hurdle that blocks the path of an organized socialist movement against the all-round capitalist onslaught. Since the modus operandi of capital has undergone fundamental changes in the last few decades, the need of the hour is to bring about necessary changes in the strategies and tactics of mobilization of the working class towards the aim of bringing about the new socialist revolution in the 21st century.

There can be no better occasion to ponder over the prospects of such a revolution than the centenary year of the great October Revolution, hence a talk on “Socialist Experiments of the Last Century and Path of New Socialist Revolution in the Current Century” by Mr.Shashi Prakash, who is a Marxist thinker, revolutionary Hindi poet, political activist and editor of the Marxist theoretical journal ‘The Anvil’. He has carried out extensive study and research on the problems of socialist transition and capitalist restoration.

Evam Indrajit ( Hindi Play )
Sat Oct 14, 7:30 PM
Udaan Performing Arts, Hyderabad
Evam Indrajeet - What would a writer do if one of his characters develops a mind of his own, when all other characters are perfectly happy going round and round within the boundaries that the writer has set for them? In “Evam Indrajit,” Badal Sircar’s abstract, semi-autobiographical play, a writer, who feels tortured by the need for creative expression in an undramatic world, tries to create a play with the audacious character, Indrajit, who “sees life realistically and dreams about it romantically.” His muse, Manasi, remains elusive, and the characters that he summons are mundane and undramatic, no different from the people around him.
Indrajit, created in the image of the writer himself, stands outside routine existence. Failing in his attempts at tying Indrajit to a plot, the writer faces a nightmarish writer’s block that pushes him into a moment of literary crisis. As he grapples with the existential crisis of Indrajit, we are presented at once with a macroscopic view of our own life, in which everything seems to be stuck in a repetitive loop, without purpose, without essence.“Evam Indrajit” is a timeless play that analyzes the question of identity, of the essence of life, against an apparently meaningless, existentialist backdrop. The audacious assertion of one’s identity, one’s essence, is what differentiates life from mere existence, random collections of particles of matter going round and round.

In memory of Shri Kundan Shah

Screening of Movie Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)| 2h 12min | Comedy, Drama

In the movie, Two friends who are attempting to start-up their own photo studio, come across shady dealings and corruption.A corruption that is so manifestly present that the others do not seem to question its existence, but implicitly assume it and use it to serve their own ends. Two protagonist gets involved in the filth of corruption and they try to expose everyone involved but the question remains 'will they survive?'.This tragic-comedy directed by Late Kundan Shah is one of finest movies produced during the New Wave movement in Indian cinema. It was a time of rampant unemployment and the times of the angry young man standing for justice.

One can enjoy it for its comedy but hopefully, the viewers will also see the tragedy beneath the humor.

S. Negi, who has recently returned from Caracas,Venezuela. Dr. V. K. Bawa, a senior retired IAS Officer from Hyderabad who has written extensively on a wide range of issues, including Latin America, will chair the programme.

The event ""Venezuela: the shadow agenda": a documentary by Hernando Calvo Ospina and Talk by Prof. S. S. Negi on Current Political Scenario in Venezuela" will have the following schedule:

07:40 pm, Talk by Prof. S. S. Negi
08:30 pm, Discussion with the panelists ( Hernando Calvo Ospina, S. S. Negi, V, K. Bawa)

"Venezuela: the shadow agenda" is a forty minutes long documentary with English subtitles by the Colombian filmmaker Hernando Calvo Ospina who will join us for discussion from France through Skype. It came out as recently as August 2017 and the cover page of the documentary says: "This documentary is not temporary. It will be valid as long as the United States persists in ending the Bolivarian Revolution that is being built in Venezuela, to seize its immense oil wealth. It is based on interviews with Venezuelan scholars who, in simple and didactic language, tell us a story that the mainstream media insist on hiding or misrepresenting." Ospina’s documentary helps us understand why Venezuela has been in news all over the world for a decently long time now. Its take differs from the supposed mainstream corporate media and is based on the interviews conducted with a variety of individuals from different walks of life. It also puts in the right perspective the way US administration has shown interest in the internal affairs of Venezuela. The film screening will be followed by a lecture on Venezuela’s current political scenario with Prof. S. S. Negi, who teaches at The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. Negi specializes in Latin American Studies and he represented India at the recently concluded International Summit of Solidarity with Venezuela, which took place in Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela from 16th to 19th September 2017.

Holy (un)Holy River
Sat Oct 21, 5:00 PM
Lamakaan
Documentary| 65mins| English&Hindi

Once celebrated for its purity, the Ganges River of India now carries contaminates from its glacial headwaters, where freshly fallen snow contains zinc from industrial emissions. Downriver, the river is dammed 16 times (with another 14 dams under construction) to provide hydroelectric power and flood control.

All along its course, water is diverted from the river for agriculture and other uses, and the 500 million people in the Ganges basin further pollute the river with household trash, industrial waste, raw sewage and the remains of the dead.

Still, the Hindu faithful revere the river as Ma Ganga - or "Mother Ganges" - a physical embodiment of the divine. Millions flock to her banks to bathe and absolve their sins with Ganga jal (Ganges water). And, almost magically, the river does cleanse itself, perhaps through dilution, perhaps through biology and the help of bacteriophages. Its waters still putrefy more slowly than water from other rivers, just as they did for sailors from the British East India Company 400 years ago.

But, little by little, this sacred and revered power is being lost due to dams and diversions, pollution and population.

Holy (un)Holy River examines the paradox of this sacred river - the intricacies of a waterway that is divine and defiled, revered and reviled - and asks the essential question: Can the Ganges survive?

October Revolution Centenary Tal

07:00 pm, Film screening of “Venezuela: the shadow agenda”
