A note about the play:

The play is not only acted by mostly women but also has being produced, directed and scripted by the women. It captures vibrancy of womanhood and life through its colourful woman protagonists.

All the artists are women who share a common passion of telling stories through theatre. Despite being mothers, home makers and working women we take out time to pursue our passion and we are enthralled every time we hear the audience’s applause.

The sum of all colours in a rainbow results in white colour. Similarly, we as a troupe are also like the colours of a rainbow which merges into white light at home but on stage each colour has its own unique identity and style.

In Memory of friends - Screening
Fri Nov 10, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan and Hyderabad Cinephile
Screening of Film "IN MEMORY OF FRIENDS". It documents the violence and terror in Punjab, India – a land torn apart by religious fundamentalists and a repressive government. After examining the political turmoil of the late 1970′s and the rise of Sikh fundamentalism, the film focuses on the legacy of Bhagat Singh, a young socialist executed by the British in 1931 at the age of 23. Singh has since become a legend. Today the State eulogizes him as a nationalist while Sikh separatists portray him as a Sikh militant. In fact, Singh was neither. Just prior to his death he wrote a book which he entitled ‘Why I Am An Atheist.’ Bhagat Singhs idea of Secularism and Socialism are still very much relevant and worth understanding.

With growing Hindu and Muslim fundamentalism across India, the importance of such a political, ideological, intellectual and human document as that produced by Anand Patwardhan is immense.

After the screening of the movie, Shri Arundeep Co-Convener, The People's Voice from Punjab will brief the audience about the backdrop of such fundamentalism during that time. He will also tell how this film was made and the importance of putting up resistance through progressive cinema against the mainstream cinema. There will be a discussion on the movie and its art in which all the viewers are welcome to participate.

Bitter Chocolate is a book written by journalist and author Pinki Virani, published in 2000.

We have adapted several case studies from the book and constructed a narrative-based
show with subtle performances.
Bitter Chocolate provides an unapologetic and honest look at the rampant problem of child
sexual abuse in our country. Both the book and the author Pinki Virani have won the National
Award. This book is the first of its kind in the Indian sub-continent not only on the subject of child
sexual abuse, but also including previously unrevealed case studies and long term side effects.
It has broken Indian publishing records in non-fiction by recently celebrating its silver jubilee
edition. Pinki Virani has also been lauded internationally for being the first person, and woman,
in the Indian sub-continent to stand up publicly and bravely talk about the sexual abuse in her
childhood which included incest and rape. She has worked with three central governments
and bureaucrats to ensure a set of strict laws against child sexual abuse. The law Protection of
Children from Sexual Offenses Act passed in 2012, includes four of her suggestions.

From Desh-Prem to Rashtra-vaad: Rise of the Assertive and Insecure Indian

Talk by Vipul Rikhi
followed by songs of Kabir

How do we understand or relate to the current climate of aggressive 'nationalism', and are there different models for expressing and sharing a love of the country? This talk by Vipul Rikhi touches on aspects of insecurity and identity crisis which may lie at the root of streaks of assertion and aggression by which the 'nation' is sought to be defined. Drawing upon local wisdom traditions and figures such as Kabir and Tagore, the talk aims to offer a broader understanding of self as well as country, and how the two may be related.

The talk will be followed by some songs of Kabir, performed by Vipul Rikhi.

Democracy behind bars - A case study of Prof GN Saibaba
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recent heart wrenching letter written by Professor GN Saibaba to his partner Vasantha haven't received any mainstream media's attention. The 'callous' attitude of the state and civil society on this issue not only questions the democratic values but also humanity in general. Constitution guarantees that every citizen has right to have political beliefs of their nature. Convicting a 90% disabled person based on the political beliefs that he possesses is extremely undemocratic and unconstitutional.

Professor GN Saibaba, along with 5 others were convinced for allegedly having links with and possessing Maoist literature. Recent letter written by him underlines the denial of basic facilities in the Nagpur jail for his survival. This also questions the inhumane correctional and rehabilitation facilities and direness of prisoner's rights.

Therefore it becomes important to discuss these incidents in the light of how modern democratic states suppress the people for just possessing dissenting political beliefs .

Azad mann in collaboration with Lamaakan is inviting you to the panel discussion on "Democracy behind bars___ A case study of Prof GN Saibaba". Panelists include Committee for the Defence and Release of GN Saibaba chairman Professor Haragopal, Professor Padmaja Shaw, CRPP general Secretary Balla Ravindranath. We look forward to have an intensive discussion.

Hindustani classical music is a heritage that has evolved through the centuries. It is a blend of ritualistic, folk and cultural expression of the sub-continent and represents music of different genres. The two singers, namely, Barnali and Anindita, will explore the integration of native and folk traditions with Hindustani classical music. This type of collaborative performance, stepping outside of the traditional bounds of Indian classical music, will be an experimental endeavour.

Organized by
