Remembering Rainer W Fassbinder
Wed May 15, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
In the hottest month of summer, May, Lamakaan brings you a cool breeze of retro films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, considered to be a catalyst of the New German Cinema Movement.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder (German: [ˈʁaɪnɐ ˈvɛʁnɐ ˈfasbɪndɐ] ⓘ; 31 May 1945 – 10 June 1982), sometimes credited as R. W. Fassbinder,[1] was a German filmmaker, actor, and dramatist. He is widely regarded as one of the major figures and catalysts of the New German Cinema movement. Versatile and prolific, his over 40 films span a variety of genres, most frequently blending elements of Hollywood melodrama with social criticism and avant-garde techniques. His films, according to him, explored "the exploitability of feelings". His work was deeply rooted in post-war German culture: the aftermath of Nazism, the German economic miracle, and the terror of the Red Army Faction. He worked with a company of actors and technicians who frequently appeared in his projects.

Film Title: DESPAIR | 1978| 120 Mins | Germany| German Language with English Subtitles

About the film: Despair – A Journey into the Light (Despair – Eine Reise ins Licht) tells the story of Hermann Hermann, an unbalanced Russian émigré and chocolate magnate, whose business and marriage have both grown bitter. The factory is close to bankruptcy, and his vulgar wife is chronically unfaithful. He hatches an elaborate plot to take a new identity in the belief it will free him of all his worries. The story of Hermann's descent into madness is juxtaposed with the rise of National Socialism in Germany in the 1930s.

Longen Folk To Go On Pilgrimage
Fri May 17, 7:30 PM
Kunal Vohra
This self-funded documentary is about what used to be a little known event until the 1980s but which has now become the single largest annual pilgrimage in India: the Kanwar Yatra. The film looks at not just the religious and cultural aspects of the Yatra but also its socio-economic impact, the environmental issues attached to it (for instance, the state of the Ganga and the potential for man-animal conflict, etc), the sheer maleness of the event, and how the occasion is being used by Hindu right-wing groups to push their majoritarian agenda and the showcase it has become for Hindu nationalism.

The nearly 90-minute film was shot over a period of six years and was an official selection at the 8th Kolkata People's Film Festival in 2022. The film has had a screening at Prithvi Theatre, Bombay, and over 35 universities across the world, including Princeton, Yale, Columbia and Stanford, have acquired it to screen/stream it for their students, faculty and staff.

Nagaram is a well knitted plot of many lives and many small stories leading to one.
Gang wars, love at first sight, desire to be the best and most powerful, control of the neighborhood, revenge, failed administrations and a gang war backed by the socio-political society. Innocent lives falling in to the so called “power” trap and humanity losing its case at every step of the way.
Two youngsters fall in love from the rival gangs and the never lasting tension between the gangs lead to a tragedy. Do they ever set aside their differences or there will always be such tragedies?

Nagaram

Nagaram is a well knitted plot of many lives and many small stories leading to one.
Gang wars, love at first sight, desire to be the best and most powerful, control of the neighborhood, revenge, failed administrations and a gang war backed by the socio-political society. Innocent lives falling in to the so called “power” trap and humanity losing its case at every step of the way.
Two youngsters fall in love from the rival gangs and the never lasting tension between the gangs lead to a tragedy. Do they ever set aside their differences or there will always be such tragedies?

Remembering Rainer W Fassbinder
Wed May 29, 7:00 PM

Versatile and prolific, his over 40 films span a variety of genres, most frequently blending elements of Hollywood melodrama with social criticism and avant-garde techniques.[2] His films, according to him, explored "the exploitability of feelings".[3][4] His work was deeply rooted in post-war German culture: the aftermath of Nazism, the German economic miracle, and the terror of the Red Army Faction. He worked with a company of actors and technicians who frequently appeared in his projects.

Film Title: MARTHA | 1974 | 116 Mins | Germany| German Language with English Subtitles

About the film: Martha is a 1974 drama film made for German television directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. It features Margit Carstensen in the title role with Karlheinz Böhm as her abusive husband. It is one of the earliest of Fassbinder's films to be influenced by the American work of Douglas Sirk. The plot was loosely based on the short story For the Rest of Her Life by Cornell Woolrich.
