We are having a brainstorming session on "How to teach the Constitution." We recently started an initiative called Citizen Sabha to spread awareness about our constitutional values.

Citizen Sabha:

Constitutional literacy is very low these days; our responsibility is to spread awareness about salient features of our Constitution and its significance in our Nation's building. Therefore, we have launched a program called "Citizen Sabha," where people of all age groups will participate in discussing the Preamble of the Constitution, Fundamental rights, Directive Principles of State Policy, Fundamental Duties, and other aspects. Through citizen sabha, we all meet and look back at 75 years of India's constitutional democracy and envision a progressive future for all.

Celebrating Wong Kar-wai
Wed Jul 5, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan
As the monsoon is set in the city, the much-needed respite from the hot weather conditions, let's dedicate July to Wong Kar-wai films as he also celebrates his birthday this month.

About Wong Kar-wai: Wong Kar-wai (born 17 July 1958) is a Hong Kong film director, screenwriter, and producer. His films are characterized by nonlinear narratives, atmospheric music, and vivid cinematography involving bold, saturated colors. A pivotal figure of Hong Kong cinema, Wong is considered a contemporary auteur and ranks third on Sight & Sound's 2002 poll of the greatest filmmakers of the previous 25 years. His films frequently appear on best-of lists domestically and internationally.

Born in Shanghai, Wong emigrated to British Hong Kong as a child with his family. He began a career as a screenwriter for soap operas before transitioning to directing with his debut, the crime drama As Tears Go By (1988). While As Tears Go By was fairly successful in Hong Kong, Wong moved away from the contemporary trend of crime and action movies to embark on more personal filmmaking styles. Days of Being Wild (1990), his first venture in such a direction, did not perform well at the box office. It, however, received critical acclaim and won Best Film and Best Director at the 1991 Hong Kong Film Awards. His next film, Ashes of Time (1994), met with a mixed reception because of its vague plot and atypical take on the wuxia genre.

Film Title: CHUNGKING EXPRESS | 1994 | 98 minutes | Cantonese Language subtitled in English

About the film: Chungking Express is a 1994 Hong Kong romantic crime comedy-drama film written and directed by Wong Kar-wai. The film consists of two stories told in sequence, each about a lovesick Hong Kong policeman mulling over his relationship with a woman. The first story stars Takeshi Kaneshiro as a cop obsessed with his breakup with a woman named May and his encounter with a mysterious drug smuggler (Brigitte Lin). The second stars Tony Leung as a police officer roused from his gloom over losing his flight attendant girlfriend (Valerie Chow) by the attentions of a quirky snack bar worker (Faye Wong).

Caste Pride - Book Discussion on Manoj Mitta's book with Manoj Mitta, Sujatha Surepally, Subhashini Ali Shepard, Mohan Guruswamy, moderated by Amirullah Khan

Manoj Mitta's book examines the endurance and violence of the Hindu caste system through the lens of the law. Linking two centuries of legal reform with social movements, he unearths the characters, speeches, confusions and decisions that have shaped the war on caste.

Describing brilliantly the passage of Hinduism into its modern avatar, the book celebrates women and men across the caste spectrum—pioneers Savitribai Phule, M.C. Rajah, R. Veerian, B.R. Ambedkar, Periyar, Vithalbhai Patel and others—and outside of the caste system, such as non-Hindu legislators and administrators, including Maneckji Dadabhoy, William Bentinck and Lord Willingdon. It re-examines the positions of leading lights such as Motilal Nehru, Thomas Munro, Mahatma Gandhi and C. Rajagopalachari, and shows why caste prejudice cleaves to names like Madan Mohan Malviya and Surendra Nath Banerjea.

Through these histories of reform, Mitta establishes that untouchability is merely the best-known aspect of varna, an elusive purity-based hierarchy that affects the freedoms of all. With ground-breaking discoveries and incisive insight, Caste Pride is at once moving, enlightening and transformative.

Sun Jul 9, 7:00 PM
Rahul Milind
'A Winter that Burned Delhi: Silent Screams and Broken Promises of 1984' is a documentary film shot and directed by Rahul Milind, an undergraduate from Krea University. Taking an ethnographic approach, it looks into the tumultuous events of 1984 - Operation Blue Star in Punjab and the subsequent Anti-Sikh riots in Delhi; and how these events have gone on to shape the reality of being Sikh in India for decades. Looking at how these events are remembered today in memory, especially by those who have not lived the experience first-hand and have only heard stories about it growing up - the post-1984 younger generations, and their understanding and perception of not just the same, but also the larger Sikh identity, the film interlinks themes such as state violence against minorities, generational trauma, and identity formation, and was completed under the advisory of Dr. Ramachandra Guha and Dr. Prithvi Datta Chandra Sobhi.

The Great Dictator (1940)
Fri Jul 14, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
Hyderabad Cinephiles is organizing a screening of Chaplin's The Great Dictator on 14th, July.

The Great Dictator is a 1940 American anti-war political satire black comedy film written, directed, produced, scored by, and starring British comedian Charlie Chaplin, following the tradition of many of his other films. Having been the only Hollywood filmmaker to continue to make silent films well into the period of sound films, Chaplin made this his first true sound film.

Chaplin's film advanced a stirring condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, fascism, antisemitism, and the Nazis. At the time of its first release, the United States was still formally at peace with Nazi Germany and neutral during what were the early days of World War II. Chaplin plays both leading roles: a ruthless fascist dictator and a persecuted Jewish barber.

Chaplin's climactic monologue has frequently been listed by critics, historians and film buffs as perhaps the greatest monologue in film history, and possibly the most poignant recorded speech of the 20th century.

The screening will be followed by a discussion.

Entry is Free.
