Sun Apr 1, 5:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
What’s (Really) Up?
Making sense of breaking (and faking) news in a digital world
A WORKSHOP, April 1, 2018
We swipe, click, switch, flip and surf, following updates, checking alerts and reading forwarded messages. News is everywhere, on every device, all the time. In this hyper-connected news environment, it can be difficult to figure out what is true and what is simply hype, what is fact and what is opinion.
This two-hour interactive workshopwill explore the dynamics of news production, and offer some ideas and tools to sift through the clutter and get to the real stuff. Using current examples and experiences, we will try to answer these and other questions—
1. How do the news media really work?
2. Who (and what) decides what’s news?
3. How do we tell the difference between fact and opinion?
4. What goes into the making of a good news story and how can we identify it?
5. What ethical concerns about the news media should we have as citizens?
6. What alternatives do we have to the big media?
The 2-hour workshop to be conducted by Professors Vinod Pavarala, Usha Raman, and Kanchan K. Malik from the Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad is directed toward college and high school students and young professionals.

Let's Say Thank You 2 Nirav Modi
Sun Apr 8, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Vivak Kaul, who is the author of the Easy Money trilogy, a series of three books on the history of money and banking, and how that caused the financial crisis that started in 2008.
Will talk about how Nirav Modi's fraud has brought the mess that prevails at India's public sector banks to national attention, and which is a great thing.
Despite this national attention, the right questions are not being asked and the right discussions are not happening.
The fundamental question is what caused the massive mess at India's public sector banks?
What caused the total bad loans of these banks to amount to a humongous Rs 8 lakh crore?
And how should this crisis be handled, if at all it can be handled now.
Also, what can be done to prevent a repeat in the days to come.
Vivek Kaul was born and brought up in Ranchi. He ran with the herd to do an MBA from what is now called the Symbiosis University, only to realise that it had been a waste of time. He then ended up in a PhD programme, right here in Hyderabad, only to drop out of it three years later. Like many other confused souls, he landed up in journalism and found his true calling in reading, writing and being lazy. He has worked at senior positions with the Daily News and Analysis (DNA) and The Economic Times, in the past.
Currently, Vivek writes an eponymous Diary and a Letter for equitymaster.com.
His writing has also appeared in The Times of India, The Hindu, The Hindu Business Line, Business World, Business Today, India Today, Mid-Day, Business Standard, Forbes India, Deccan Chronicle, Deccan Herald, Bangalore Mirror, Mumbai Mirror, The Asian Age, Mutual Fund Insight, Dainik Jagran, Outlook Hindi, Swarajya and so on.

Is SC not diluting SC/ST Act?
Thu Apr 12, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
“The taste of anything can be changed. But poison cannot be changed into nectar.” – BR Ambedkar
In a recent verdict, the Supreme Court's ruling on the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 has invited a lot of criticism. According to the Apex court's directive, coercive action against public servants, accused of hostility towards the lower caste, can only be taken with written permission from the competent authority. For private citizens accused of a similar crime, an arrest can be made only after the Senior Superintendent of Police allows it. The reason iterated by the court is'abuse of law' and issued guidelines to this effect that false complaints to implicate innocent people have often been filed to promote caste hatred and 'perpetuate casteism.'
On one hand, there is growing atrocities and violence against Dalits and Adivasis across India and on the other hand such rulings by the Apex court delay justice to the victims of the caste. Is Supreme Court not diluting the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act?
Come for an informal Addabaazi charcha on this burning topic.
The discussion will be moderated by Jeevan Kumar, Human Right Forum Hyderabad

Cowspiracy:Documentary Screening
Sat Apr 21, 11:30 AM
Dr. Arun Rangasamy
About the Documentary and the Event:
The documentary ‘Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret’ complements mainstream Climate-Change awareness efforts that almost singularly focus on energy and transportation. This 85 minute documentary addresses the question ’Does food matter?’, and seeks to find the impact of our food choices on climate change, deforestation, resource consumption, pollution, bio-diversity and sustainability.
With extreme events (eg. prolonged dry-spells and highly intense rains in a short time) becoming relatively more frequent, this movie will empower caring individuals with valuable information to make wise, informed choices that help contain climate change.
This event is a part of Earth Day (22 Apr) awareness programs.

Increasing Acquittal in NDA Govt
Tue Apr 24, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
The recent judgements in Mecca Masjid bomb blast (2007), Malegaon (2006), Ajmer (2007), Samjhuata Express (2007) blasts have given clean chit and acquittal to the accused. This has become a disturbing pattern of the courts including NIA to declare accused acquitted. Where is the justice to the tens and hundreds of people who died and several critically injured in the bomb blasts? What about those who were falsely implicated immediately after the blast? They are not re-inducted back in the society. We have also seen cases are dropped against the accused in the communal riots in many states. What does it indicate to the victims, who are continuously suffering due to denial of justice?
We invite you to join us for a discussion with our expert panel on this increasing acquittal trend.
Panellists:
1. Raghunath, Senior High Court Lawyer, Hyderabad
2. Prof Fatima Shahnaaz, Emeritus Professor of Political Science, Author and Social Activist.

Date - 26th April 2018, Thursday
Time - 8.00pm

About the Play:
It's been 70 years since we have attained Independence but still a majority of the population does not even have a house to live in. Some have even seen the dream of owning a house and died with those unfulfilled dreams.
Tin Tappar is a depiction of the problems faced by the labour class in India. The poor keep dreaming of having a pucca house, but those dreams are crashed by the builders and corrupt real estate agents. Instead, they have to live in slum areas which is covered with a tin roof. Few of them migrate to towns and cities in search of work and improve their standard of living while others become a victim of the political propaganda and accept their situation happily. The builders don’t even spare these areas and demolish the tin sheds in order to build multi storey apartments and malls.

Write Club Hyderabad helps you pen your thoughts, spill your mind and finally make an appointment with the writer in your head. We conduct free, weekly events that foster writing. Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). We also exchange feedback and constructively critique each other's works. Entry is free, anyone with an interest in writing can walk in. Bring your writing devices and we’re all set! We promise to provide you with good coffee and a super-creative conversation. We have Write Club sessions every Saturday afternoon – 3 to 6 PM

Knowing Madeeha
Madeeha Gauhar (21 September 1956 – 25 April 2018) was a Pakistani actress, playwright and director of social theatres, and women's rights activist. In 1983, she founded Ajoka Theatre where social themes are staged in theatres, on the street and in public spaces. With Ajoka she performed in Asia and Europe.
Gauhar was born in 1956 in Karachi, Pakistan. After obtaining a Master of Arts degree in English literature, she moved to England where she obtained another master's degree, studying theatre sciences at the University of London. In 1983, with her studies completed, she returned to her native country, settling in Lahore. There, Gauhar and her husband Shahid Nadeem founded Ajoka Theatre, a notable theatre group of significance in the city. Ajoka (English:Currunt) elaborates on the oral tradition of Bhand and Nautanki and found a flourishing base in the area that overlaps the province of Punjab. With Ajoka, Gauhar performed in Pakistan, and subsequently internationally in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, as well as in several countries in Europe.
In directing performances in the theatre, Gauhar utilised aesthetics and theatrical techniques to reflect the moral, social and political reality of contemporary Pakistan. A recurrent theme for her, as a feminist, was the subject of women's rights in a society that is greatly dominated by men. In 2007 Ajoka performed a play that was written and directed by Gauhar, the Burqavaganza (Burqa-vaganza), which led to great controversy. Actors dressed in burkas acted out themes of sexual discrimination, intolerance and fanaticism. In her own country, Members of Parliament called for a ban of the performance but in spite of the ban, non-governmental organizations and women's rights activists had the play translated into English and staged performances internationally as a sign of support to Ajoka.
Awards and nominations
Gauhar was the recipient of numerous awards for her theatrical efforts, including:
At the first iteration of the 1st Indus Drama Awards in 2005, she was nominated for Best Actress Drama Serial in a Supporting Role.
Gauhar was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
In 2006, Gauhar was awarded Prince Claus Award in the Netherlands.
She received the Pride of Performance, by the President of Pakistan for her efforts in improving Pakistani theatre.

Uneeswan Adhyay
Written by Lakshmi Narayan Lal, this play falls under the 'Theatre of Absurd' genre.
The play largely focuses on the idea of existentialism and showcases a court room scenario where logical construction and argument gives way to irrational and illogical speech and ultimately to silence. It follows the murder case of the Abdullah and addresses the comfortable certainties of social, religious and political orthodoxy and aims to shock its audience out of complacency and strives to bring them face to face with the harsh facts of the human situation.

MAITHILI S
"KYILKHOR" is Tibetan for mandala means 'that which encircles a center'.“Center” here, what it means is “a meaning,” and that which encircles it is a symbol, or a representation of the meaning. Mandalas represent wholeness, unity and harmony. Most importantly, your mandala needs to be soulful. You may bring vegetables & fruits of all colors to make mandalas or draw and paint on a sheet of paper the choice is yours. Just make sure you have fun with it. If the food mandala is bigger than 4 Sq.Ft and a very intricate design then more than one person can work on it, but please make sure you have friends around to share it with or you can always donate the food to a old age home or a home for the needy.

" Take a break & just paint" focuses on stress relief through finger painting.
As an artist, I believe "Art is Meditational"
And, Finger Painting, is one such form of therapeutic art of relieving stress through creating art with the touch, feel, activating the senses of sight, at mental, emotional and also nurturing levels. With the flow of paints it also slightly works on acupressure points
+It allows one to express freely and creatively through Art.
And the best thing is it can be practiced by both children and adults.
